@expertcompsci Can't say for sure, but a lot of times, especially for recordings and shows, directors and producers cut a song's airtime to fit a program. You can fit a lot on a CD nowadays that you couldn't fit on a 78 or even an LP; but when you hear Mahalia, you hear pure, genuine joy and spirit -- no overdubbed, auto tuned studio engineering. She was the real deal.

I just watched "Jazz on a Summer's Day" on an on-line movie viewing site (unfortunately, a pay site), and Mahalia performed the last 15 minutes or so of the film.

I have never heard such emotional, beautiful music so perfectly recorded in my life. I had tears in my eyes and I was speachless. If anyone hasn't seen the film; but loves Mahalia...I beg you to watch "Jazz on a Summer's Day" - WOW!!

I mean like one the posters said, back in Mahalia's time, most of these people came straight out of the church , so there is pure annointing going on. Most of these artists these days are only concerned with going "mainstream" and if that entails hiring a producer to produce tracks with the latest beats for the younger crowd , then they do it .

The problem many people find with todays gospel has more to do with the dependency on technology and in the infulence of secular music. Can you imagine a world where there are no instumentalist? where sunday service is dictated by synths and pre fabricated drum beats. There has always been an inter-raltionship between church and secular music, but to what extent its good is debatable. People say the world stoled the beat from the church, well maybe 100 years ago but now the church is taking its cue from the world. Why are some of these 40yr old & over gospel singers doing dance routines and have dancers in their videos like teenage pop artist do? Its not about annointing its about doing whats popular at the time. Go back to creating trends not following them.
