Addendum:I was in "garage bands"in 1966-68, and "garage" didn't refer to an aesthetic, it referred to where we rehearsed. The backward-looking nature of the current (as in the last 25 years) "garage" aesthetic is an attempt to re-create the earnest amateurishness of those bands at that time, and misses the point: We weren't trying to sound like amateurs, we were practicing three nights a week to get to where we sounded like pros. To celebrate our amateurishness is grotesque, and misreads history.
any of your bands record a 45? Good point earnest amateurishness sounds better than an imitation of it. I don't see anything wrong with celebrating being raw though. That's what I like about the music.
Regrettably, any tapes made of our "record-hop" appearances, covering tunes by The Outsiders, The Standells, and The Syndicate of Sound, are long gone, but thanks for asking.
Apples and oranges, kids: This 45 came out in the U.S. in the spring of '67, just before the Summer of Love in San Francisco, and represented the last gasp of the British Invasion (yes, they were Aussies, but most U.S. kids didn't know that at the time). Late summer and early fall that year, "Someone to Love" and "Light My Fire" were at the top of the charts; six months later "Sunshine Of Your Love" owned the airwaves.
Yea the Doors were good and I'm not sure about thousands of garage bands. Maybe but I've not heard them and all this when I was too young so I'm not sure. I only know I don't like what was mostly popular then here. I have always preferred the English and Austrailan's and later in the 80's Germany's Metal and Scandinavian Black Metal, AMerica started to come out with better bands but they were still weak compared to Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Or Led Zeppelin, or the Beatles and Rolling Stones
I don't know why I love this song so much its just great. I guess it reminds me of a better time. Look at those beautiful people dance what a sweet song. I get misty eyed when he sings "I'll be with my girl she's so pretty" what great lyrics and and melody. What a song this was. What a great band they were. American music mostly sucked then and still mostly sucks. Australian and English bands have mostly always been better gee I wonder why? Could it be they really are better? Yes!
I don't know if all American music sucked back then, at least (nowadays, perhaps) after all at Americans (the U.S.) had the Doors, the Grass Roots, Janis Ian, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix (I could go on, but won't; there are more; yes, I'm an American & not all music sucked). This vid is of a live performance that still is an awesome song though. I think the fact that it references freedom for at least the weekend might be why it has such universal appeal.
no way there's literally thousands of American garage bands in the mid 60s that were amazing, check out we the people, the seeds, standells, richard and the young lions, rationals, etc etc. Back From the Grave, Teenage Shutdown, Nuggets compilations if your idea of 60s music is just Janis Joplin, Hendrix and shit like that.
I know that. I'm not stupid, and I do have the nuggetts compilation.
Let me see, what American artist I can think of: The Cake (late girl group), Electric Prunes, The Seeds, The Standells (have two compilation of theirs), Count Five, The Barbarians (slightly earlier), etc.
Please don't condescend to me when knowing about American, as well as British and Australian and let's not Canadian acts of the time. That's just ugly ignorance on your part, not mine.
everyone is focused on michael jackson and fara passing away (which is really sad) but let's not forget about sky saxon the lead singer of the seeds. they weren't a huge/popular band but they were part of the 60's music and influenced many modern bands today.
Must be relaid audio, I saw the SAME exact version where everything matches in-and-out except this "max" icon and it has a slightly warm tone. Just how the video is gassy, the audio should be warm; sounds better that way.
Friday on my mind was a hit in Brasil too (in the big cities), we danced it a lot in the 60's. What a different guitar, when it started to play in the parties no one could stay stopped (and alone). Just rockin. Great posting!
What a great song! Some very nice & unusual harmonics in the guitar exchanges, a driving rhythm that's catchy, and lyrics set to a theme that we can relate to: FRIDAY. The 60's style matching suits & turtlenecks are signature stuff -- very hip.
George & Harry Vanda (Blonde guitarist on the right) went on to produce some of Australia's finest music artists (AC/DC, amongst many others) under the name Albert Productions. And recorded music themselves under an alais "Flash & The Pan" (nzoz1977).
yes, the lead singer, he's known for doing flips during shows and i thought this is the video where he does it, but it's not. Though this video is very nice. Do you know what video it might be on?
The Easybeats are legends here in Australia, and were tagged the Aussie Beatles. This was from a countdown on the TV of the top 100 Aussie songs, should have been no.1 I reckon!
Interesting...in this version it sounds like first line of 2nd verse he's saying: "Do the 5 day GRIND once more" but it's actually "Do the 5 day DRAG once more" on the record.
Well, I checked the record and it still sounds like he's saying "Do the 5 day GRIND once more". A lot of the lyrics on Google say, "Drag" however. Sounds like "Grind" to me though.
Thanks Damo! Was just out today...freezing water but the main thing is to be out there! Take care, Kevin, Huntington Beach...and Hey! Easybeats ROCK!!!!
I´m here again! Why+ Well because I feel that this song and this performance is the best there is. I also think that Stevie Wright in this clip shows that he was one of the best leadsingers ever. Just watch his headmovements...currently I´m entering a competition here in Sweden where we are going to agree upon the best poptune ever. Friday.. will get my vote!
Classic!
