remember listening to this a lot when 1st came out and i was a teeny bopper - knew i was listening to heavy adult music then. Glad my mate's older brother had all those Stone's albums- blew our young minds. Distinctly remember the 1st time I heard JJ Flash- sucked all the oxygen outta my lungs. Then we got drunk !
Yep had the 45 My two Fav Stones tunes on a 45 Down In The Hole and Emotional Rescue:) wore that 45 right out, always listened to this when I was depressed or needed to write a poem for English:)
Un blues de 6 heures du matin...j'adore. Sur "Emotional Rescue", elle fait parti des 3 ou 4 morceaux je garderai, avec "Where's the boys go", "ER and "All about you"
This song alone switched me onto the blues. I couldn't just put the needle back and listen to it again, I had to believe that there was more music like this. I was 13 years old...
No, the Stones here are even more essential... This song sounds like an actualisation of the Bible, read the book of the prophet Zephaniah, chap 1, verses 14 to 18, called "The Day of the Lord"... "Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord"... In the line of the old bluesmen, several Stones songs are "Bible-founded"... "You Gotta Move" - "Prodigal Son" - and, but in a different way, "Sympathy"...
I love this overlooked song. It's so gritty. I love it. Keith and Ronnie often comment about their "ancient form of weaving" regarding their "double-lead" type playing, with BEAST OF BURDEN held up as the best example of their playing in-and-out-and-around each other. Well, I think DOWN IN THE HOLE is another wonderful example of their "ancient form of weaving."
@helenapwf I think that song is not obscure as it was popular when Emotional Rescue was recently released. I bet Keith had to twist Mick's arm into doing it as it is very bluesy and that speaks of Keith not Mick.
Rock Solid Pure Gold and very good proof why the Stones took over the music world...

The harmonica on this song was performed by Sugar Blue, who contributed the same instrument on "Miss You" off "Some Girls."
