i hate you guys haha. these videos are makin me so anxious and its only january!! four more months. i reckon the foxes and coyotes will have to do till then. great videos btw
i live in michigan and the groundhogs have started to dig under our house so i go and shoot them with a gamo cadet delta pellet gun for 20 yards and kill them killed about 17 of them so far and i have hsd the gun for a week and a half
Yeah, me and my brother have a few farms to hit yet. So they are overun with em. We will take a vid cam with us next time we go together. Chubby little things are loads of fun to shoot
I use either a ruger m77 heavy barrel in .243, or a rem m700 sps in 17 rem fireball. both are tack drivers. The 55 gr win and the 58 gr hornady's really do a number on hogs. I live in ohio, right on the river. So the banks are overun with hogs. I have got 3 with the .243 and 2 with the .17 so far this year.
The Ruger M77 is a nice rifle. We use one chambered in .257 Roberts for deer and groundhog. Its a great all-purpose cartridge. We have also noticed that groundhogs tend to make their holes on banks next to water alot of the time, but we dont really know why. They really dont drink water, they get all the moisture they need from the grass they eat.
Why dont you take a video camera with you next time you hunt?
Im thinking about getting a rifle cam. I need to get a good day when my brother can film some hunting. My brother has a H&R handi rifle in 204. Its a cheap single shot, but it gets the job done. I shoot across the river most of the time They all were over 100 yrds, the longest shot was 160 yrds with the fireball. Every now and then i will see one sun bathing on a rock or fallen tree. I sneak down the bank and shoot them while they sleep.
I would not recommend getting a rifle-cam. It transfers the vibration of the shot into the camera and the video shakes all around and looks like crap. Just take the time to set a camera on a tri-pod or a sandbag and your video will turn out fine. Its all about planning ahead of time and getting set up properly.
I thought a gun cam would work, but after thinking about what you said and the fact of strapping junk to my rifle doesent seem the way to go. I will just get a nice tri pod and set my cam next to me next trip out. Thanks for the tips.
I live in Ohio. most of the hogs around here hang out in the ditches along the country roads. I usually drive to get them. Don't know if I can really afford that this year. I've got a few places I can sit and wait for them. Looks like that's how I'll be hunting them this year. Nice shot by the way.
I've always figured that it is easier to dig their holes, because they can dig horozontally instead of vertically. it would be easier for them to throw the dirt out of the hole. That's just my guess though.
it ususally varies in different areas, but we have found generally that the best times are 9-11am, 2-4pm and 6-7pm. But you really would benefit from scouting out your particular areas and learning their habits.
we have 2 regular farms we have permission to use, one is about 60 acres and the other is about 200. But we have shot about 3 times as many hogs on the smaller farm.
We know where all the holes are and what times of day they like to come out. We generally split time between walking and driving.
man how much land do you got to hunt on?? and how is there so many woodchucks also do u just sit and watch a hole or do you drive around and look for them?? and your dad is a great shot
yeah, the Roberts is a great multi-purpose catridge. Its a little overkill for groundhogs, but our rifle shoots so sweet, it would be shame not to use it :)

Nice shooting!
I shoot rabbits out where I live, and cottontails at that, so they're small little suckers. I use a .17hmr and I'll push it to about 150 yards.
If we had ground hogs or wood chucks or anything (I live in Vail Arizona by the way), my pops has a Remington 700 chambered in .308 for that. ;-)

yeah, we always see alot of them with their holes dug into the embankments on the sides of the road... I wonder why that is? hmmmmm....
