  • Is that your average black ink that he's using?

  • That 1 person that disliked this video does'nt know what talent is...

  • This was basically like watching porn for me. Oh god. Anyone know the kind of brush he was using?

  • Inking is serious business.

  • ehhh he's good but hes no frank razetta. or Marc Ferrer for that matter

  • Fans of the series come to WelcomeToBoneville (dot com) and join the brand new BoNe forums!

  • Lame choice of music.

  • @310sucks thats all u gotta say? o_o

  • ur using a brush!??! wow ur amazing

  • Wow. He does it all with one brush! I always thought they did it using a pen.

I'm trying to replicate this look in Photoshop. Haven't quite mastered it yet but I think I'm on my way there.

  • Its just the perfect soundtrack. This is fucking EPIC!!!!

  • does any body know what ink he uses?

  • @Holygiant He uses India ink. He has never specified what brand as far as I know.

  • @Holygiant Prolly either higgins black magic or Dr. Martins India ink. Hard to say. There's some others out there, but I don't know that many that can get that rich black line.

  • @Holygiant

    black ink

  • @dance4ever956 yes that is the method pretty much every comic artist does. Its really not smart to try and produce a drawing from just pen an error would waste hours of work.

  • I wondering what kind of material he used to ink this. Was it all a brush? Or some special pen? It looks amazing nonetheless!

  • @BlueLumi8692 Brush and ink, it looks like- the body of the brush doesn't look thick enough for it to be a pen. but looking at the way the brush itself is, it looks similar to my Winsor & Newton

  • Amazing!

  • If he was drawing Bone, this video would be 5 seconds long.

  • lovely gator :D

  • Great !

  • I love how he goes over some of the lines more than once. I thought I was the only one who did that, and always assumed it was really unprofessional - happily I was wrong. :D

  • I think I gotta get this brush and paper now!

  • Annoyed by all the trips back to the inkwell and never having enough ink in that #2 round to make very long strokes?

Try a #2 (or #3 if you're confident) script brush. After a little practice, you'll be getting the same strokes as the equivalent round, with the added benefit of being able to lay down long elegant strokes (think about the hatching in Berni Wrightson or Mark Schultz's work, for conspicuous examples), and holding much more ink per load.

  • My god, his brush control is Insane... this is why he is one of the masters who we should all try to emulate.

  • @greatzombieron

This was a little surprising to me. Being familiar with Jeff Smith's clean lines in Bone I expected less fiddling about with rough strokes. Maybe he was nervous or uncomfortable working with the camera over his shoulder.

  • I believe he's inking on light blue pencil.

  • Wait, i can just barely see a drawing underneath the paper he's inking...he's tracing it, right?

Also, how on earth could anyone ink with such precision? Any cure for shaky, anxious hands much?

  • @SparkyMK3 He uses a pencil first and then he uses the other tool. That's why you see another part.

  • @SparkyMK3

Brace your writ/palm firmly against the board to reduce shaking when laying down precision lines.

Notice in the video where JS has apparently pulled his sweater sleeve down over his palm? This is to prevent smudging (using clay-based blue pencil instead of graphite also helps in that regard). You can make a palm guard by cutting the toe out of a clean sweatsock also.

  • I only use a pen and a computer, I feel ashamed.

  • Using a brush takes a lot of skill and time (great for inspiring other artists to take their time and draw)

  • the man is a god

  • Holy lord this is inspiring.

  • i didnt know he used a brush, i thought he either used a pen or the computer. WOW!

  • Anyone can use a computer. It takes skill to do by hand.

  • hm hm hm

  • Jeff Smith is the best...

  • what kind of brush was that?

  • most likely it was a Windsor Newton Kolinsky series 7 sable brush. i say that only because it seems to be industry standard. they're pretty nice brushes, no doubt.

  • Jeff Smith uses a Windsor Newton Series 7 #2 and #1 watercolour brush.

  • that person must have amazing control to be able to use a brush like that. it would be cool to see him use a dip pen.

  • I'd rather see him do in in real time... not speeded up.

  • A crocodile can't talk!

  • What type of brush did you use ?

  • This is astonishing. Was there a pencil sketch underneath that the camera rendered invisible?

  • Yeah there was. It's in non-photo blue pencil so it's unlikley that you'll see it when he scans it on to th ecomputer and then colors it.

  • adventure+ comedy+quiche+Moby Dick+ stupid, stupid rat creatures= Bone

  • this is from MSOE issue 2 right?

  • i didnt know what it wa still 1:05

  • it's an alligator creature that works for Mr. mind

  • This is brilliant! How are you not smudging the ink?

Could I also ask how penciling and inking is really done been looking everywhere! - For example in the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, it shows original pencils, inks and colours all separate?! Do they use thin paper to trace through?

  • It really depends on the artist(s). Usually, most artists pencil and ink one piece of bristol board. Each artist or team operates differently... Artists who pencil and ink their own stuff usually just spend a little less time making tight pencils, since they're finishing the art themselves. Pencillers who have a separate inker might spend more time defining the art so the inker has less to translate... It really depends on how well oiled of a team they are.

  • I GOT CROWN OF HORNS!!!!

  • Hi great video please help how could i make my cartoon character dance with me in a youtube video is there a softwear i need please help

  • you're a beast, man!

    amazing!!!

  • No offence gukok but I think pantsm4ster was kidding with the tracing thing.

  • you can also order bone 1 from scholastic

  • "He just a tracer" I just kidding, anyone saw Chasing Amy

  • Does anyone know where I can get the first book of Bones?

  • Any Barnes and Noable. Or go online to any website that may have a copy, personally I just buy the whole Black and White Book, but the colors is nice

  • that was his rough copy and then now he's inking it in...Yeah, of course he traced it, but its his own artwork, he drew a rough copy then he put the good copy on top to not mess up, becasue, some of those supplies are really expensive and id hate to mess up, so techinaclly yeah he traced it, but, he did it for a good reason, every artist or if you prefer, cartoonist, does it. So its nothing bad :)

  • Thats... AAAAAAAMMMMMMMMAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow...

    truly a master

  • How'd you get this footage?

  • Very nice. I have the BONE One Volume set. This was cool. I like the use of background music.

  • I'm getting the Bone: one volume edition today! and its awesome u can get it at book stores it has all the bone volumes in 1 in a classic black and white you all should get it!!!

  • man, you must have a lot of patience to do things like that.

  • ...including waiting for this video to load.

  • Just so you people know , The person who posted this video didnt do the drawing, he even says it hims self. Its done by Jeff Smith, author of the comic, Bone

  • alsome

  • This is huge for me. I love Jeff's work and an aspiring cartoonist myself. There's nothing comparable to seeing Jeff work. Thanks for sharing!

  • master of the art

  • you rock!
