  • I'm in my mid 50's will probably be staring at the inside of a coffin lid in less than 20 years but I still wouldn't trade the experience of growing up in the 70's to be a youth today.

  • Saw Ian Hunter a couple of years back in London (at the show that was released as a DVD). Great then in '73, great now too.

  • I went to a show they did at the Uris theater in NYC...maybe '73. Queen was the opening act. What a night!!!

  • lol disliked this just to be the first one to in 37,616 views

  • I knew of these guys but never really thought much of them but they opened a show in Memphis, that I attended, and they rocked the house…

  • Who got there first - Ace Frehley or this guy??

  • @audiotrax2000 Just what I was thinking!

  • Wow do I feel good and old.

    And on parole!O:-)

  • @TheNokie65 Saw them in Cleveland too..1974 John Carroll University..Band was great but I don't know if I had as good a time as you..

  • Dudes! I just noticed a little in joke from Ian. In the first verse,he sings," .... she rides the train to Oreole!", but then just after lightly shoving his new guitarist away from the mike, he sings "When I got to Ariel ....." Perhaps the shove was a bit of fun, though neither of them are seen to laugh about it.

  • Classic rock + roll from back in the day.

  • You're not looking carefully enough. There is a player on a grand who appears more than once.

  • Anyone notice this... NO KEYBOARD PLAYER, AT LEAST NOT RECORDED

  • The Original ACE FREHLEY....

  • love it that was music back in the day

  • Love Ian's shoving of Ariel Bender. We fans missed Mick Ralphs and didn't warm up to Luther/Ariel right away, but now I prefer his playing to Mick Ralph's. Check out Roll Away The Stone from TOTP, recorded a month after this.: By then Ariel wasn't taking any shite from Ian.

  • @Themanwhocameback2

I couldn't tell- I thought Ian's shoving might have been theatrical, Ian playing the part of the self-absorbed rocker. But you say it was something different.

Anyway, this is a helluva of a performance of one of their best songs.

And I'll definitely check out the TOTP show you mention.

  • @Themanwhocameback2 ...yah we were all mad too that Mick left to form Bad Co but after that all wore off you start to see that Luther is probably is better...iyou're right, I think Hunter realized it during this vid

  • my brother gut drunk in the sun .. left the 33 out there and it got warped.. picked it up with the original sleeve.... he left... and when i was 11 .. took out the wavy record and played it... an guess what im 42 and still love mott the hoople

  • I saw Mott the Hoople on 19 Oct 1973 in Columbus Ohio, a bit over a month from this concert, and Aerosmith was one of the opening acts with Robin Trower. Ariel Bender was probably my favorite guitar player at the time. Had never heard of Aerosmith but oh wow, what a night!!!! I think Aerosmith made MTH play even harder and better than before.

  • Mott rock plain and simple!!! Go Ian !

  • in many ways mott restored the original spirit of rock n roll, that sort of back-alley, cockney, sneering attitude more akin to a pool hall rumble than a consciousness-expanding spiritual experience. not to speak ill of the cerebral stuff (after all, king crimson is possibly my favorite band), but it's nice to have a musical backdrop to life's rowdier moments, is it not? definitely an influence on punk, both in sound and spirit (but we all know this . . .)

  • I was 18 , when I watched this on Midnight Special, in 74, still love it as much, Rock on Mott!!!!

  • i was 14 when this came out and i love it today like i did then.

  • when i was 16yeas old, i like ian hunter very much! iam japanese.

now i am 52yeas old ,good memories!! thank you! my fevorito rock star!

  • Love the way Ian gives Ariel that shove at 1:35 - you're not quite sure whether it's just showmanship lor whether he really means it! :)

  • You need to get the itunes track or CD to get the best sound - you are getting 1/10 of the emotion and music here - it's a shame, but you just can't extract the goodness out of these old recordings...

  • Overend Watts has to be one of the most original looking guys in rock, ever.

  • This is what its all about. Fantastic.

  • Randy Rhoads was a big fan of this guitarist...its like Ace meets RR.

  • ya i agree with those who commented that Ace from kiss borrowed the guitarist's jacket, but how about the bass player's boots!!!...Ace wore those as well!!! lol

  • It's the height of glam rock... "to all the slags in the audience"

  • Another thing I noticed is the guitarist next to Hunter has an outfit with the big shoulders just like Ace Frehley and the same hairstyle - I wonder if Ace took his "look" from this guy? Just a thought...

  • I was in the audience for this show. It was my 2nd concert and I was 12 years old. I became a huge Mott fan after this. saw Ian Hunter early this year and he still has it.

  • I saw these guys in Chicago, 1973....Queen was supposed to open the show, but Brian May was sick with hepatitis, so Kansas was brought in to substitute! Needless to say, a good time was had by all! After the show, we met the band in the alley behind the Chicago Auditorium, and I got to shake Overend Watts' hand! Fingers like huge sausages!! Best band, ever!!

  • @CStack2Ci

Thanks for the personal observation. I now see he is quite tall vs. Ian Hunter. This is something that is hard to pick up a video. This is a GREAT TUNE!

  • Greatest Rock-n-Roll band ever.

    Ever.

    Period.

  • Amazing. Very real - we need more of this in the 21st Century. Band dynamics are great. End of the song is Bowie's Suffragette City, or vice versa. Take Bender's torso and the bassist's legs and you've got Ace Frehley!!!!!!! So much influence from this underappreciated band. Ian!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great tune. I'm struck by how in-charge Ian Hunter is here. It seems he is definately the leader of this band.

  • I may have been at that show...

  • Move Over You're Standin in My Light @1:37... LOL...

A shame Overend's mic isn't working, but all in all just an amazing performance of one of the Hoople's all time great rockers. THANK YOU!!!

  • Great songs, great bands, great times and some really good drugs...if we'd known what was coming we probably would've thrown ourselves off a bridge when the first disco-ball dopped , D...."Who's Reagan?".."RUUUUNNN!!"

  • @celloprofundo very well said mate i agree entirely! i love all this music especially 70-75.then disco stuffed it all up................

  • Happy Birthday Ian!

  • Excellent, thanks for posting. Love Aerial's playing with Mott.

  • Love to see Ariel Bender here.

  • @StephenRedrobe... THANK YOU!!!!!!

  • @Telecasterchick - you are so right! Currently I can think of only a few bands who are doing the "dress for the stage" thing (minus the platform shoes). One is My Chemical Romance. They started out very screamo but their Black Parade collection has songs that are reminiscent of Queen; down to guitar licks that channel Brian May. (PS - I'm 52 so I remember greats like Mott the Hoople but love Alt Rock.)

  • Ariel Bender-one of the best rock n roll names .........ever!

Great post....thank you so much. The memories flow and i CAN'T GET ENOUGH.

  • Looking at these wonderful videos I noticed something interesting. That period: wow, how gonzo, (in the best meaning of the word). Groups had personality, the music had personality, the outfits, over-the-top, what we were wearing was pretty over- the-top as well, cars had personality. It was such a bold, dazzling, somewhat tasteless, (but with a good dose of humor), and fun time. Now, could it be more generic? From the groups to the music to the clothes to the cars etc. sigh

  • ha ha, gimme some space @1:37...........

  • So F***ing good!

What an energy and what a drive! Mott the Hoople beats the shit of any punkband at any time in history with energy. Still competent musicians. This is musical history!

No wonder they sold out 5 nights at reunion.

  • great vid ,, thanks for posting

  • Dude, WHERE oh WHERE did you get these absolute CLASSICS of Mott Live w/Aeriel Bender?... THEY ARE ALL TREASURES!!...LOVE 'EM MATE!!!...anymore?...
