Just can't get the thundering original with Jan Hammer's incredible keyboards and (was it?) Cobham on drums - think the riff is more suited for them than Vinnie - line up not strong enough here....
this is where the legend of the 60's rocketed away from the masters of the 60's such as clapton and others--they stagnated--but beck just entered new realms of playing existance.
saw him play when he toured with s.r. vaughan. that's when i realized how over-rated vaughan was...vaughan was good but his arsenal was the same 15 blues runs over and friggin' over, again. beck unleashed ALL his licks and there were many; and not just the penatonic blues scale.
How this guy got to get a doctorate from Sussex Uni beats me. This highly over-rated guitarist can't even play his 'wide toned - full frequency' response - basswood' stratocaster in tune. By the way - I used to go to school with him in Kent back in the early sixties. By the by, Kent is a county in England for my American readers. Thought I'd just mention that. Wish I hadn't now. We loved tinkering together beat up old cars . Hey ho - those were the days - but wait - ugh ugh
Fucking douchebag attention whores. Beck is and always will be a master of rock/fusion guitar. Hell, he invented the really good kind of fusion! Haters be damned and we know your game. Just trying to stir up shit, aincha?
i can see how some people would not like jeff beck's playing ... it's a personal taste thing ... i'm a guitar player and i happen to love it ... everyone has their own likes and dislikes, and fair enough ... but never say he isn't a great guitar player ... ask any of the great guitar players and they'll all tell you that jeff beck is a master ... here endeth the lesson ...
@therealcraigbaxter While that may be true......I think we can safely assume that anyone who doesn't like Jeff Beck's guitar playing is either A) a moron, or B) a total bloody moron.
@freejrs that's a bit harsh ... nobody, and especially jeff beck, is going to please everybody ... personally, i don't demand that everyone like the same music i do ... and i don't call those who don't morons ...
Hmmm...as I think back 'Wired' might be the name of the album featuring Jan Hammer. L.D. if you see this it was your record. I live in Windsor, CT now. I'm listed so call if you can...
I was listening to a Jeff Beck album around '73 or '74 while eating my dinner. The songs were mindless diplays of speedy scales with no feeling or direction at all. Got me so wound up and pissed off I pushed away from the table grabbed the record and flung across the room. Hit the wall shattered into a million pieces. I felt much better until the wife reminded me it wasn't my record. A friend gave it to me for a listen. Shit!! I had to buy my a brand new album for him (which is only fair)
@todd0000420 He's pulling the string STRAIGHT OUT with either his thumb and index finger OR he does it with just his thumb if he's pulling the tremelo ........RENT this (or buy it) and WATCH HIS HANDS while he plays.....this is the best views / shots of some of his techniques.....
@todd0000420 - whammy set up in a 'floating' style. IOW, it can be pulled back about a half inch, you'll get a semi-tone to tone of pitch UP out of the 6th, 5th and 4th strings. Once you setup your whammy up in this manner, pull it up, ( aka 'Back') hold it, while pressing a note, and let it go. The act of it whipping down fast while in a floating position causes the 'purr' sound. Now, do this with one finger, as if you're flicking the whammy up, or down. There's that sound.
According to the ratings on this video 18 peoples are as about as smart as a box of doorknobs. Oh what a society it is that we live in. I guess Jerry Springer wins. NOT !!!
The thing about Beck is he wants more out of the guitar than the guitar is willing to give....but he just takes it anyway. superb player, very original and quite inspiring.
Please don't burn me alive for saying this, but... as much as I love and respect Vinnie's drumming, his playing is often too busy for JB's music. I'd rather listen to stuff he did with Simon Phillips, Michael Walden or Richard Bailey, for example. More "groove-conscious" players.
I've listened to this dvd many times, and it keeps getting better with each listen. Do yourself a favor, turn off the video and listen to the entire band. Unbelievably tight. The keyboard solo here is fantastic, the drumming is flawless, the bass lines are sweet. Jeff's guitar sounds like a 6 string analog synthesizer. Miles Beyond.
Man he kills. You hang on every note. And he is still relevant. Better live that on any recording in the studio. See him 100 times and each time is different. Out of the Page, Clapton, Beck trilogy he is the only one still doing it. Page and Clapton are legends but go find a clip with them and Beck and they are outgunned.
@WWladek lol how I said basically the exact same comment without havig seen yours .... we do a cover of "come dancing" w my bluegrass band when we've had a few....
Love that they can play through the mistakes and laugh about it. Of course I'd be happy to have a band nearly as tight as this. But alas, that's just a pipe dream I fear. To get a drummer that good and a bassist that slick would be an impossibility in this part of the world. Or at least so it seems.
Incidentally, you can find this DVD in the cheap bins at most music stores. People just don't appreciate good music anymore. They'd rather spend twice as much for computer generated crap than an actual band that plays real instruments. No DJ here. Wait. I'm a DJ! Yup. I can play my own cds and records. And, there won't be any techno or dance music playing. I can guarantee you that.
Beck so obviously knows what sort of signature sound he wants, and he gets it the way he likes it - the thumb picking chokes down the Fender single-wound pickup treble range, giving the tone almost a voice-like quality - the tremelo bar gives those fluttered notes and sudden glissando dives to the bottom of the register - the hammer-ons are just flash staccato virtuosity - his melodies are flashes of momentary inspiration - a dramatic performance, with little gaps to let it all sink in - !!!
ok im a drummer and how awesome would it be to have a sexy wife who plays the bass? i love the set and bass combo an we would jam, smoke, and make looovee alllllll daaaaay
What I love the most about J.B. is how utterly original his every move is.There are thousands of technically brilliant guitarists but vanishingly few have left such an unmistakable imprint.
@bluesborn JB has 'studied' the Fender Strat like nobody else. I don't want to make the comparison with Jimi because 'comparison is invidious', ... but these two are way ouyt there by a massive margin in terms of harmony, melody, invention, string technique and sheer captiivation. Did Jeff and Jimi ever go on stage together?
@bluesborn One of the best points about Jeff Beck I've ever heard. The cleanest, smoothest player? Hardly! But damn is he not completely original, innovative, and constantly (attemptedly) duplicated? Yes, I made up the word "attemptedly"
Peraphs, but I don't think this song could be considered a great performance for Vinnie... Hear for istance on Youtube the same song played by Narada Michael Walden with Jeff Beck...

@AxisofJustice21 What a stupid fucking comment. Music is music, and it differs. I couldn't care less about your fucking guitarhero culture. I appreciate both Jeff and Nile, cause they make awesome music.
Love ya so much, your guitar playing is amazing!! And A GREAT BIG THANK YOU for coming to play in the Viareggio benefit concert for the victims of the train accident!!!
I will never FORGET YOU and hope to see you again soon!!!!
Jeff Beck's awesome and his band is some of the best musicians around. Vinnie Colauita on drums, Tal Wilkenfield on bass and Jason Rubello on keys. AWESOME!!
The guitarist's guitarist. It's funny how many ill-minded, stubborn metal heads listen to this video and think "JESUS AWFUL TONE. JESUS AWFUL PLAYING. JESUS NOT FAST. JESUS HOW IS THIS SOULFUL. HOLY SHIT TERRIBLE."
If you're a true musician, you know the truth. Enough said.
I don't mind at all. His guitar tone to me is just awful. I am a guitarist myself, and I am very big on tone, and for whatever reason I really hate his. Again, I don't deny his talent as a guitarist, and the band is amazing. Tal Wilkenfeld is one of my favorite bassists. But I have watched dozens of videos now because so many of my friends who are also musician are always ragging on me for not being a fan, saying I'm just not listening to the right stuff . haha I just don't think it's my style.
I agree on the tone. I'm also an axe dude, the tone wasn't all that good. Jeff Beck is an amazing player, but this particular tone was not the usual great things we see.
i wouldn't call the tone awful i think its just different. not traditional plus you got to consider the place he is playing in and how it affects the tone
Man, despite my many, many attempts to find something I can appreciate in Jeff becks music, I think I have to officially give up. To me, that was just painful to listen to. I cannot comprehend how somebody could enjoy this. Just my opinion of course, please don't send me a thousand replies telling me off. I don't deny his talent. But i think this will be the last attempt I ever make to become a Jeff Beck fan.
but apart of this she-bass cute girl, I don't hear the grove. It's instead very bouncing thru the beat, every member is playing something different... Cool but not the best performance of mr. Beck.
Is it just me...or does Jeff sound a bit weak on this?
Sounds like his heart isn't really in it.
This just hasn't got his usual pumping spot-on drive...
Perhaps he had piles that day?

I could never get into finger picking on the guitar, I tried. It only works on bass for me.

Me too. It is just too close together for me. Glad to see someone else has difficulty with it.

Yeah, I mean it works on acoustic, but with electric, I've actually cut some of my fingers on the strings.

He's always been interesting, sort of has a cult following, not mainstream. Very talented, just not for everyone.

Great Drummer btw.

Nah dude. I'm in the exact same situation as you. I really agree with you completely.

i wouldn't call the tone awful i think its just different. not traditional plus you got to consider the place he is playing in and how it affects the tone

Ya.
but apart of this she-bass cute girl, I don't hear the grove. It's instead very bouncing thru the beat, every member is playing something different... Cool but not the best performance of mr. Beck.
