@emforty2, do a little more research and don't relay on the urban legends and myths. THE PE was done in by a number of factors and one of them was not the line being purchased by GM and shut down. As the LA area grew many of the original right of ways were used by the cities that grew around the railroad as streets, giving the right of way to cars and not the interurban line. One of many factors that played a role in the decline of the system.
That ugly sound is SMPTE [Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers] time code on one of the two the audio tracks. The time code was used to accurately edit video back in the days of Sony's 3/4" videocassette format, known as U-matic (pre-Betamax/Betacam). Since this video was transferred with the sound on, you'll have to mute it yourself, or click on the Video Response (above, recommended) to hear a jaunty piano score instead.
The Pacific Electric was the largest electric interurban system in the world, covering the Los Angeles and outlying areas. Now, LA is one vast parking lot, but at least the weather is nice.

Thanks for a great find. I'm a history major in school, and the PE is what I want to specialize in.

I can't believe that guy who dives under the train. That was real, no special effects. Don't try that at home.
