Having heard Jerusalem twice wish i had heard him........ wonderful.........so sad that he departed so early .. i believe was 35 when this was done and would have been 67 this August...
Can anyone tell me is this was recorded as a movie/dvd or was it a live performance? If it was a live performance, it is wonderful the way these two relate to one another instead of singing straight to the "audience." And how is Mr. Hofmann doing now? I'm sorry I don't speak German but I sense from the last post that he has become more incapacitated. I wish him well. He has given so much joy to so many people thru his music
Yes and no. It's a faithful recreation of the actual performances, recorded without cuts. But the taping was done without an audience, Mainly to allow for better camera placement.
Mr Hofmann suffers from Parkinson's decease, and has done much to raise awareness of this affliction, Since quitting opera he's had considerable success in musicals.
@rusalkaism I attended the 1976 production, the third cycle, and forever Walkure will be Peter Hofmann and Jeannine Altmeyer. I know other artists have done just as well, in some productions perhaps better; I don't care. Firstly is the personal association having attended live, but moreover there was such power and chemistry between those two... RIP Peter Hofmann, you are missed.
Peter Hofmann forever. Es ist ein Jammer --> diese scheußliche Krankheit. Ein Fan der ersten Stunden bleibe ich und geniesse immer noch alles, was ich von ihm sehen oder hören kann.
Peter Hoffmann is the perfect Siegmund... Heroic, young, handsome, hot...
I saw a Walküre this summer, where we had an awful Siegmund. Fat, old, with a boring voice and GLASSES. A hero with glasses! I couldn't stop sighing after Hoffmann.
These two burn the stage with their white-hot passion---makes the heart pound!...and these two make it utterly believable that the characters are brother and sister....the most exciting, sexy and wonderfully disturbing Act 1 ever!
I saw Altmeyer do an excellent Islode in LA that was panned by Martin Bernheimer, but what the hell does HE know. He's just a jealous lieder baritone who went into "poison pen" criticism.
Peter Hoffmann's vocal demise was a great loos to Wagner performances.
It is said that the particular symptom of Parkinson was awared around 1993.That means the disease has begun to progress around the middle of 1980s without being noticed at all. One of the most tragic diseases....
that was wonderful-do wish i could have seen more of them as i recall they had a wonderful chemistry. saw Altmeyer as Brunhilde in Gotterdammerung and between acts we were told she was ill and would try to complete the opera-which she did-and very well. i'm so sorry to hear about Peter Hofmann, but he was a very respectable singer and really video-friendly. this was a treat!
Peter Hoffmann lost his voice because of over-singing/lack of technique and went on to be a famous German pop star. I know that's common knowledge for most, but some might like to know...
He was successful in Opera and Pop for years at the same time and didn´t become a Pop-Star because of "over-singing/lack of technique". Fact is, his carreer faded after putting the German "The Phantom of the Opera" on stage and that´s because he became very, very ill (Parkinson desease) at only 45. He didn´t make it public for years. Nevertheless I think you agree -watching this here- that it is damn sad that such a strong, healthy and handsome appearing Guy is strucked down like that..
Yes, I know that he has Parkinson's, but I believe that he actually lost his voice for reasons other than his disease. I do not think that he looks "strong" as you say (he needs a little more bulk for that.) I know that it is heavily in dispute amongst operaphiles, but I believe he should have been heavier to be a great Heldentenor. If you compare his recordings with other great Heldentenors, you hear that he pushed attempting the robustness of tone the greats had, thus shortening his career.
Saw Peter Hofmann as Lohengrin in San Francisco, I think in 1982. Elsa was Pilar Lorengar, Leonie Rysanek, Ortrud. Was quite surprised how good Hofmann was. Starting this clip, I thought he was Johnny Hallyday for a second.
Jeannine Altmeier was performing her very first Brunhilde at the Met when at the end of the first act, she decided she could not continue. H. Behrens happened to be in NYC at the time and rushed to the theater to finish the performance. It's no wonder we didn't hear much from Altmeier after that. I did see her name years later on the schedule at the opera in Barcelona though
Actually, along with recording Brunnhilde (under Janowski, I believe), she has also sung the role live at the Amsterdam opera. DVDs are available on Amazon.
You are right, she recorded the role of Brunnilde under Janowski´s conducting and she also played the role of Freia in Karajan´s Das Rheingold DVD(it has been recently released by DG). Rgds,
Don't think that Brunhilde enters in the first act, she starts in the second with 'Ho Jo To Ho'... People from the Met must have been very angry at her...
Well, I guess now you see how well I know my Wagner. Of course Brunhilda enters in the second act. I any case, she sang one act and had to stop. I wasn't there but I could imagine it was pretty horrible for her.

RIP... hottest Siegmund ever.
And what a beautiful, dark and yet shining voice!
If he was born a baritone, he would've been a great Billy Budd too. Ideal looks... (Oh my, imagine him vs Matti there. Chills!)

It is a special live performance without an audience afaik. But why should they sing to the audience? It is not a concert but a theatre play.
