A couple days ago (when I downloaded this game on the Wii's Virtual Console) I discovered that there is a way to determine which direction the wind is blowing on the Death Wind tracks. It all depends on what the backround is like. If it's bending to the right, the wind id blowing right (and visa-versa).
In the Death Wind tracks, the pit areas aren't affected by the wind. So, when you get to that point you can drive straight without crashing from the wind.
Death Wind was one of my favorite tracks when I played Fire Stingray, especially when I used the boosts.
