i love how the whole video works on the most boring part of the best movement of the concerto, i was waiting for it to go on to the big explosive part after that but it didnt
I'm a singer....and the 1st thing I notice, is that Helmerson knows how to make the instrument sing! The analogy of allowing the glass to naturally overflow, is perfect for any singer to understand too! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!
We do not have a double bass masterclass in the catalogue, although we are gradually working our way around all the sections of the orchestra. If you want to suggest a maestro for a double bass masterclass, do let us know.
Great masterclass. Wonderful teacher and student. But if I was that piano player... haha, I think I'd go crazy starting and stopping every few seconds! When I play piano, I'm just happy when I don't hit a wrong note!
And not every great musician is gay... even if they were, who cares?
I'm new to the cello, you really have to like shake the finger kinda thing to make the cello sound good. I want to do that to be ahead in my orchestra class.
The student has a great sound, but the teacher Helmerson succeeds to get from him his soul. What a great teacher. And as said here Helmerson is so delicate that apparently he has a great soul that shows in any of his notes.
I wish I could have this whole concerto played by him...
I would dream that my little girl would get from him once (some years from now ...) a master class from him...
He does get from the student the music he probably has inside... The student has a great sound, but he succeed to get from him his soul...
As many others have said , Helmerson is so uncommonly delcate with his teaching that it is apparent that he has a tremendous heart that shows in every note. Is there a place were one could download whole concerto played by him?
You are so right he's a wonderful teacher. Watch out for another masterclass DVD with Helmerson working on Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata. It will be out at the end of June and is just as good as the Dvorak.
Frans Helmerson's metaphors are really spot on! Like the one filling a glass of water and continuing the pour after it's filled up. Great way to make other people understand how you think.
Frans Helmerson is one of the best cellists in Sweden, and europe, and I think in the whole world as well. When you hear him play, you don´t care about the technique, you just here the music! That´s the best with him!
Can't post it here, but you can get the whole DVD nearly an hour long from the URL on the clip. There's only a taste of one of the world's great cello teachers here.
Thanks for your comment. We've now got a great page on Facebook. Just enter Masterclass Media Foundation and you'll find it with reviews and plenty of other information.
This is great teaching! It is a mutual exploration of the music and beutifully filmed. Frans Helmerson offers his insights so gently without undermining the performer.

I totally agree! The water thing is so cool. And it's some of the most subtle nuance because he's already playing that part so well.
