Here's an interesting tip on keeping your pleats pressed even after you washed the kilt: Sew the fold of each pleat. use an edge foot if you must on your machine.
The way you are pleating the kilt doesn't look right to me because you are not keeping the correct sett (pattern) of the tartan. The way I was informed was that when the kilt is pleated, the pattern should look exactly the same as the unpleated cloth. Your video looks like the sett is not kept. I say this with all due respect.
@ABWEndon There are 2 ways for kiltpleating, pleated to the sett and pleated to the stripe. In the video the kilt is pleated to the stripe.
Pleated to the sett means you repeat the pattern so that it does look like the unpleated cloth. When pleating to the stripe, the pleats are folded so that one particular line is centred on every pleat.
I HAVE NEEDED YOUR VIDEO and I am blown away at the fact that you showed how to do the seemingly toughest parts--the pleats---with such ease and accuracy. Thanks to you, I will try my hand at making a kilt. You and your assistants did a really professional job on the video instruction and the tartan that you worked with is actually one of my favorites. MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING EVERYONE WITH YOUR SKILLS.
@MuRk409 the intro has "5 yards" typed out, but it will change given with each person's waist size... if you consider yourself about the same size as Karl in the video you should try out 5 yards and see how it goes :)
if possible, try to get the rougher wool cloth with traditional plant dyes. its got a softer visual effect. the colors kind of fade into each other seamelessly.
@Renaissancefairemom ...judging by the small amount of cloth, it seems hes making the Queen Victoria version cotton Kilt. it is not the much larger traditional wool Belted Kilt with big pockets. no sewing and ironing required. a belted kilt is also a tent, blanket, windbreak, and a stretcher if needed.
hmm not bad, but i woulda cut off the front half where a kilt ends mate...thinking on using an old table cloth for a kilt if there enough material...just a cheap kilt projecty to patch, stud, and mod for daily punk wear and shows.....saving my Irish Tartan kilt for nicer ocassions..
Please don't think that this has anything to do with how a real kilt is made or worn.
There are several sites (just Google) which will give a full explaination of how a proper modern kilt for a man is constructed, all the ways the pleats can be made to show off the tartan, how the shaping is calculated, the sewing, the canvas reinforcing, the lining, the fringed edge, the waistband and all.
There are sites explaining the older forms of kilt too.
@xmacd I'm going to go ahead and assume that you know from first hand experience how kilts were originally made hundreds of years ago? He said in the description it wasn't an official kilt.
Not a bad video, but I am wondering why you hid the 'verticle' stripe in the plaid inside the pleats and not adjusted them so some or all of the verticle stripe would be on the edge of each pleat? It's all a matter of taste, I suppose. I always thought 'pleating to the stripe' exposed some or all of the stripe and not hid the stripe. Thanks!
@FatmanandSkinnyman traditionally its wool. the thickness varies as wearing a thick wool kilt in summer sucks even in scotland but whatever thickness wool is the best material.
Great Video. I have a question for you. Stop the video at 4:38. Should you sew the pleats between the waistline and the 6 inch mark to keep them from spreading out like that? Could you make some more vidoes on the beltloops?
You do not fold over the shoulder with a modern kilt, like you showed. That is something you do with great kilts only, and that is obviously not a great kilt.
thanks for uploading your video. i made my kilt easily and beautifully thanks to you guys.

why a man dresses a mini skirt ?
528jkl 7 months ago
@528jkl It's not a skirt. It's a kilt. It makes men look uber manly and sexy, and the chicks, myself included, love it!

A tip: instead of pins, use boby pins at the inner end of each pleat.

whatever celtic pattern you want. If the event you are making it for is in the fall or winter go with something thicker, they get cold.

Use materials like Wool or Fleece, or some type of heavy material is best for Fall and Winter months
