cantonese, taiwanese, and mandarin are all Chinese. Ask any Chinese person. They are different dialects of sorts. One that knows Cantonese has an easier time learning or understanding Mandarin, but not the other way around. This is probably due to the fewer amounts of inflections in Mandarin. Taiwanese to me is a whole other animal. I don't understand a lick of it. For all intents and purposes, however, they are all Chinese.

actually, taiwanese, cantonese, and mandarin are very different if you listen to them closely. i've watched several movies from china and taiwanese dramas, and the three languages are distinctly different and the meanings and pronunciations of many words are different. that's why people say people who speak cantonese can't understand someone who speaks mandarin, and vice versa.

There r many languages and dialects in China, the way things r pronounced is very different.

(Not talking about people who r Native English Speakers like American-born or British-born Chinese, just Chinese from China or Chinese speaking countries) A Mandarin speaking Chinese would sound completely different when he/she speaks English from a Cantonese speaking Chinese.

It's not a "Caucasian Feature" as well, it's a feature that not all Asians have, but is so for Caucasians. That does not mean it's a "Caucasian Feature".

Considering that he speaks both Chinese & Japanese fluently, his English sounds good enough too! In the past i was rather surprised when I saw him speaking chinese so fluently. ;D

After watching clips of interviews Takeshi san received in Japan and on CNN Talk Asia, I've found that his Japanese is better than English, although he had studied both in Japanese and American schools in Taipei. But overall, his language ability is quite outstanding, and this would greatly help him break through language barriers and become an international star. Most importantly, he is humble even if he is famous. He's a good actor, and I look forward to more dramas and movies featuring him.

Au contraire...Takeshi and Hugh have transcended the language barrier...Takeshi is brave to put himself in a vulnerable position because English is not his first language...kudos to him. I enjoyed hearing his thoughts...brilliant really, when you consider his face and voice is one of the most recognizable and admired in the world!
