  • nice

  • 4 days my ass

  • sweet as fuck bro. I wish i could play an acoustic instrument -.-

  • @Topknotch0789 Buy an acoustic instrument :)

  • Shit I really need a mandolin I love that sound !

  • Holy shit!nice!

  • What kind of mandolin is that?

  • i played the very beginning of this on a mandolin at the local Guitar Center the other day... It's actually a little difficult to play a mandolin at first.. Great cover man!

  • It doesnt sound like the song I know for mandolin... get a tablature, dude.

  • are you a fan of the waterloo warriors?

  • gayboy

  • Yeah, I mean if you wanna play some serious mandolin it's obviously hard. But like they said, I play the guitar and in a guitar center I picked up a mandolin book and a mandolin, found out it was tuned EADE, and I just figured it out from there.

  • @indystarwarsfan585 Dude, it's EDAG.

  • @indystarwarsfan585 Dude, its tuned GDAE

  • @bernardmmarx Yah, you're right, it's just that the one I played at the guitar center was tuned EADE and I was recently told by the store manager that the mandolin was out of tune (no it's not random, he sees me play it every week.). But yes, I acknowledge that, when tuned correctly, it's tuned EADG. Now, I have to relearn the songs I knew.

  • This guy is really good!! I'm sure going to practice his technique.

  • why you give up? started good..

  • i was going to find tabs for this but i was able to use this video and figure out this whole song from watching your fingers and using common sense.

  • 4 days its cool. But you should not uploaded this video to youtube.

  • excellent

  • @dunaldango

ya toymachine is right i had never played a mandolin until the other day in guitar center its not that hard to get the hang of if you play guitar, i picked up a mandolin book they had lying around and started figuring it out almost immediately. But either way man good cover.

  • where did you learn this give a lesson please

  • dude that just about perfect, sounds exactly right!!!

  • This song is probably the reason for most people to buy a Mandolin haha nice video

  • lol not bad brosef

  • What kind of mandolin is that? And ggod job!

  • its more like a violin its the same tuning but it has frets

  • nice video, i just bought a mandolin off ebay for my first instrument,

anyways your not named after toy machine skateboards are you

since u don't look the slighest bit like a skater

  • loosely based off the battle of evermore? it's the same chords and notes used with different strumming basically. but keep it up. you are good for only having it four days. you should try to learn battle of evermore more accurately and post it... i'd love it!

  • You may find a strap will make it easier to play that style mandolin. As it an A style you need some support for the neck. But you seem to be getting on ok and that is amazing seeing as you only got this instrument 4 days ago!

  • mighty fine!

  • Damn nice, man. I mess around on guitars and harps. I'm looking into a Breedlove Quartz KF. You're an inspiration...thanks.

    pax et bonum

  • Awesome man

  • Man, you are frickin DEADLY!!!

    good for you!!!

  • fun

  • does anyone know if these are hard to play?

    and how much they cost?

  • they are fun to mess around on, i bought one for 50$. definitely worth the money, this song and going to california are why i bought the mandolin lol

  • What brand did you buy and how nice is it because i am thinking about buying one for about 50 bucks

  • Rogue RM-100. Its not electric, but its sounds great acoustically. it stays in tune, all that shit. like i said definitely worth the money especially if your a zeppelin fan lol

  • They're mildly difficult.

You can get a good one for about $40 in MusiciansFriend.

  • 150$ similar to a guitar, i think an octave or two higher, start with tabs and work your way to sheet music

  • no its tuned in fifths different from guitar, yes a guitar is kinda tuned in fifths but it starts on E instead of G on a mandolin and dont do tabs!

  • @Joemamma14butt its like guitar but tuned backwards the tuning is like G D A E instead of E A D G

  • Ur officially my favorite mandolinist cept jimmy page wen he playd this

  • actually john paul jones played the mandolin

  • you are correct , but page played it on this song!

  • what kind of mandolin is this?

  • nice buddy

  • awesome :D Try out Rory Gallagher's Going To My Hometown! It's the reason why i bought a mandolin. Okay, okay, bought it a year ago, and had to take the dust of a couple of days ago, but i'm gettin' better at it :D

  • nice job

  • Awesome. I'm putting in a formal request for you to play the whole song. It's my favorite.

  • that was nice but

... if you are going to play it. play it to the end

  • im thinking of buying a mandolin what is that called an octasve mandolin? im confused on the different types

  • that is a normal a style mandolin. an octave mandolin is tuned an octave lower and is about the size of a small guitar.

  • now, i belive you have been playing more then 4 days when you recorded this, its not to difficoult but i just dont belive youtube braging

  • I'm definitely not lying, and I'm not "youtube bragging" either... this really isn't tough at all since I play guitar. I don't claim to be great at the mandolin, in fact, I haven't even touched the mandolin since about a week after this video. Anyone who can play the guitar could learn this song in probably 2 days once your fingers get used to the strings.

  • okidoki

  • @4toymachine4

    i hear you

    now, should buy a mandolin?

  • @brandinator22

    OF COURSE haha

  • @4toymachine4

really? i mean, would i still be interested in it after about... 3 months?

  • @brandinator22

I lost interest pretty quickly, but if you're in to making music it's definitely a nice sound to have around. It is a really cool sound afterall!

  • @4toymachine4 Toymachine is right i learnt Ukulele in a day all minor, major seventh chords so i could play pretty much anything all you have to do is get your head around how far apart the strings are and it's just a small guitar

  • @4toymachine4 : I know what you mean. I played guitar for about 10 years, took me an hour to learn the basics of mandolin.

  • @4toymachine4 i agree i got my mandolin two mdays ago and its easy if u play guitar

  • @Dunaldango I believe him, I picked up a mandolin in a store once and figured this out in a few minutes, it's not hard.

  • @Dunaldango dude - i have been playing guitar for about 5 years and i could play this song to a similar standard as this bloke 5 mins after i picked up the mandolin.

its so similar to guitar tab that if you can read tab fluently it doesnt take any time at all.

im crap at the mandolin because this is all i can play - but its easy to learn if you know how

  • @corpsemunger hehe okai i belive you, this song is kinda easy on the mando.

  • @Dunaldango

    One word springs eternal!

    ARSE!!

  • Guitar skills + lanky fingers + dyslexia (or focus)= This with a bit of ease.. I'll back him on the 4 days. Props 4toymachine4!

  • Hey, I was wondering what's the price for a new mandolin , not a great quality one jsut an Okay one. How much did you paid your?

  • I don't know US prices, but in England you wouldn't want to pay less than 50 GBP ($75). 150 GBP ($250) buys you a reasonable factory made instrument but the more you pay the better. Handmade instruments cost upwards of 1000 GBP ($1500). You can often tell the build quality simply by weight, with the better instruments being heavier.

My electric mandolin cost 250 GBP ($400) about two years ago, and that's a really nice instrument - and very heavy!

  • Man i liked it. I just got a mandolin given to me so im about to try my hand at it. Thanks for the cover.

  • i thought it was good effort.

  • hey kurnur

    dont !

  • positive, it's not a hard song... these parts anyway, it's a four stringed (basically) instrument. If you know the chords it's not very difficult to figure out the picked notes

  • @Kurnurs

Its called playing by ear dumb ass, its the sign of a good musician. Its what I do when I learn songs. You listento the track, then get the easy bits down first, then you learn the hard stuff when you get to know the core. Ontop of that he'd only been playing for 4 days before hand. Thats the equivilent of picking up a guitar for the first time in your life and trying to plan Stairway to heaven note for note. Go on, you try that, see how hard it is for yourself.

  • I'm a musician, I know what playing by ear is. I'm just saying I find it hard to believe he "played it by ear" without differing from the tablature even once. And I can play both this song and stairway because I play both instruments. Try making a real reply instead of trying to insult me anonymously when you don't even know me.

  • Kurnurs:

You my good man, are a fag

  • Hahaha

  • pieper13:

You my good man, are a legend.

  • i learned this song the first day i got my mandolin

  • You started out okay but then you missed a large segment of the intro and went straight into the chords.

Decent effort but you need to practice and get your hands on the sheet music.

  • I wasn't trying to play it note for note. I just figured it out and thought it was cool since I had only touched a mandolin for the first time 4 days before this. I'm a guitar player.

  • where did u get the notes or did you learn it by ear

  • Got the chords then figured out the notes.

  • What kind of mandolin do you have? it sounds really nice!

  • It's a Gilb, I don't know much about them but they're from Mexico and apparently they'll be coming to Canada/USA soon.

  • not bad... not bad at all

  • Thanks for the suggestion, that sounds like a cool idea! Thanks for watching :)

  • Dynamic Desi? Yea good suggestion, not. I'm not indian.

  • That site is for all not just Indians. Although it has a predominant Indian base at the moment

  • Cool video man.

  • is that hard to play?

  • it's probably not to easy

  • It's pretty easy, the good thing about mandolins is they're in open tuning (I think, I don't really know anything about them) so anything you play sounds good! I play guitar so I picked up this song pretty quick.

  • cool

  • are you using a pick?

  • Yea, just a regular guitar pick

  • oh ok

  • Is mandolin hard if you have guitar experience?

  • nice!!!!!

  • actually JPJ didnt play the mandolin on battle for evermore, it was page

  • nooo they both did

  • great cover man, imo JPJ is way too underrated for his composing skills

  • that was great! i love this song

  • tell me, did you start with playing melodies and then move on to playing chords when you first picked the mandolin up? i would love to make the transition myself and play the battle of evermore. any tips?

  • Sweeeeeeet!!!!!!!!

  • i just bought a mandolin and i would like to say that was sweet.. where can i find tabs for that?

  • Hey I plan on learning to play the mandolin, I play bass guitar and normal guitar (mainly bass though), and I was wondering is it difficult to learn songs like Battle of Evermore after playing for a couple of weeks. I have yet to purchase a mandolin, but after listening to John Paul Jones, I really have been getting into it. Great cover by the way.

  • thats really good.

  • nice!

i play the guitar and i never really played a mandolin but ive been watchin john paul jones playing and he got me pretty interested

what brands are good for mandolin?

  • Well, that depends how you define "good". I prefer mandos with the large, round soundhole to the f-style ones (which seems to be the only style anyone produces really). These are louder and fuller than the f-hole style mandos in my opinion. If you're talking brands then I'm really not sure, I just got this one a little while ago as a gift, so I really didn't do my homework on buying one since I didn't buy it haha

  • oh ok thanks

i dont know jack about mandolins so thanks i'll keep what u said in mind ;) cya

  • try a gibson . thay are all very hign quality and handmade in the USA

  • well played dude

  • Where did you get that mandolin?

  • Hey Leanid,

My mom bought the mandolin in Mexico about 2 week ago from a supposedly "well known" hand-made instrument shop. Apparently they will be selling these in Canada/USA in the years to come. The company name is "Gilb". What do you think of it?

  • Looks solidly built, and I definitely like the sound--I prefer mandos like this to the over-produced ones devoted to bluegrass. Sunburst finishes and f-style soundholes always seem overdone and too formal for any style other than bluegrass. Very cool instrument.

  • Thank you! yea, it's definitely solid... and it has a MUCH fuller (and louder) sound than the f-hole style mandos.

  • I agree man I prefer A style mandolins 2.

  • sweet

  • i also love you dain Mc-bro-icuddy

    from Spencer.

  • no, i love YOU dain mcgilimicutilutley :D
