This is how to work a crowd. To turn a song that mention the words 'Nelson' and/or 'Mandela' into something that is not tacky or cloying or just plain fucking naff is quite an achievement for ANY band. The elecricity in Simple Mind's performance comes across - even on video. Jim Kerr has all the right moves, stagecraft, a breathy voice of indisputable class and thus makes himself look like a totally awesome rock god to have me drooling that I was him! Class.
@KaleGroto absolutely when my father talks about the time I wish I would just have been there. Music was much more meaningful back then and way better!
Mandela ... a communist agitator & terrorist. Blew up Power Stations on behalf of the para military wing of the ANC. Killed white people in hospital beds who were unable to have dyalasis, ECG and monitoring because of the lack of power. His then wife Winnie took orders from him from his cell on Robben Island to kill his opponents within the movement with petrol filled tyres... A Fire Necklace.....This so called 'great man' is a two bit hodlum and murderer. I was 8 when he was jailed.
@Ollfie i am white and english and maybe its just payback for all we have done to them ! what comes around go's around and you are not a black southafrican so yoy dont see it as they see it !!!
@sweetassugar69. Your right. I'm not a black South African.......I'm a white Ex pat whose family worked for De Beers and I lived there for 28 years and saw my friend blown up by a car bomb in Hillbrow. The guy was dying on the street and the blacks stood around and laughed chanting ANC! ANC! It comes as no surprise that Mandella was freed in the way he was...but those who pontificated & demanded release from the side lines have no idea just what a scheming rancid & ruthless Kaffir he is.
@Ollfie i understand your thinking but there are always 2 sides to every story oll but only yesterday i talked to a client who was raised in SA up to her early teens abd being told by her parents and friends not to swim in the same swimming pool as a black person because the water is dirty !! thats very bad !!
It's to easy for people that do not live in SA to say that Mandela was a hero. He had the dream, but sadly he did not have the political backbone needed to rebuild a nation that was in total chaos after Apartheid.
Ok, but would have done it better?? Mandela was the right man on the right moment. Nobody else could have make he transition from Dirctorial regime to democraty, Ok, the African way as European / Amercan system doesn't work for Africa. Not now, but fight for the beatiful country and not be the foolish "leaver" who escapes oversease.
@davidgilmour22 you're right Simple Minds must concretrate more attencion 'cause their job and last albums are simply great. Look at U2 for example his last album (No line on the...) is definitely boring but it's U2, the people don't know what it's really the good music. Greetings from Spain. SIMPLE MINDS just... THE BEST
Would love to see this line up of musicans again for Simple Minds. Malcolm Foster, Lisa Germano! The Street Fighting Years were great, albeit I believe the best is yet to come in their 30th year.
So glad to find this on here! I was right at the front with a flag and remember it like it was yesterday. This song, especially Charlies guitar solo still makes every hair on my body stand on end, just shear brilliance!
yes wot a performance , def the minds at there technical and artistic best, and at a period during which they changed the World, make no mistake about that , one of the most influential bands of our time
This is actually the second gig at wembley celevrating the release of Mandela in 1990,I was at this gig and the first one in 1988 when this song was first performed , the song was written espcially for the first gig .All artists were supposed to have written a song for the event (1988) but it was only simple minds who carried it through and wrote "Mandela day".It is of course on the album street fighting years
@dbadz Thaks, for someone actually telling us when this was performed!. I have the 1988 one on C90 tape when it was simultaneously broadcast on TV and Radio 2 VHF, I was experimenting with a new stereo decoder that very day. Also Tracy Chapman and others, Dire Straits?. Wonder how much my quality tape has faded... I remember that day and the whole concert so well.
Been waiting for this for ages. Thanks very much. This is what YouTube is about for me. Being able to see the stuff you taped off the TV years ago but haven't seen for ages. Keep it coming and thanks again.
beautiful.....

Thought JK did well here, considering he'd just had a blazing row with Peter Gabriel about how long SM's set should last.
