I hate how square enix fucked with Cloud's personality by making him depressed all the time, because for everyone who remembers playing the Original final fantasy 7 will remember that Cloud had a pretty fine personality, made jokes and even said some thing strange things at times like when he was staring at some girls in the beach and said "nice view". but a lot of people only know Cloud from advent children or KH and say hes he's a whinny emo. It makes me sad at times.

Man, damn. This right here is the deepest scene in the game. Cloud is a very deep character. People like to diss and bash Cloud for being "Emo." Give me a break. What Cloud feels is generally what we all feel at some point in our lives. Guilt, despair, self-doubt, that's what makes us human. Cloud never claimed to be all mighty. He never claimed to be the shit. All Cloud does is search for his reasons, as we all do. But even with his doubts, he's not afraid to help out where he can, shown here.

Also, those 5 years as Hojo's guinea pig came when Cloud was 16. If anything, his development was arguably stunted. He couldn't even free himself, Zack had to. And in that broken, semi-catatonic state, he watched as the one person who truly cared about him, the only friend he had in the whole world, got gunned down in a hail of gunfire trying to save him. People seriously need to cut Cloud some slack, he has every reason to be how he is.

@Str8Murder Good points, but the 1 thing people who bash Cloud like this never take into account is that he spent five years in a test tube being shot up with mako and J-cells, and his mind was almost completely destroyed. None of the other examples you gave had anything like that. Terra ironically comes closest to his situation because of the slave crown, but even then she still had a sense of self. Cloud's psychologically damaged in a way none of the rest of them are. That's his "good reason".

She was confused about her motivations but did she give the antagonist what he needed? No, she resolved never to be used for destruction. No. Only Cloud and Squall did things that put people in danger because of their own selfish neediness. Only they have

He had reason for being ashamed of himself, but did he mope around?

He's depressed because he's been that way since he was a child. He was depressed then because he thought he was useless, and he was depressed later when Sephiroth crushed his memories for the same reason. But why has he always been that way? Is there a reason provided? No. And he gets so down, that he gives the antagonist

Cloud is supposed to be a subdued hero, seeking motivation, determined once he's found it. Resolved but not the sort to go RAAAAAAASK and throw themselves into a flying headbutt at the bad guy.

He has a pretty damn good reason to BE depressed, all things considered. He's been made into the bad guy's buttmonkey for most of the game.

Cloud wasn't emo in VII. He had a lot of quirks about him, and had a very diverse personality. He was never any one way, especially not emo. There was only one period in the game that Cloud even went into some kind of depressive state, and it was for a good reason.

Both were subject to amnesia. Both were brainwashed and manipulated by the main antagonists. Both started out relatively meek, mopey and sort of unsure of themselves but matured and became much stronger.

I knew the whole "question of identity" aspect would be said, as that's their only real similarity apart from their cold behavior to start.

First of all, Cloud did not have amnesia, his case was a lot more complex than that. As a result of trauma and experimentation, Cloud combined Zack's memories with his own to create a cleaner "backstory".

Terra was abducted as a child, grew up under an empire, and got amnesia from getting knocked out by an Esper. She had no clue who she was.

Cloud's jenova cell manipulation was a huge subplot with Sephiroth, that led to a lot of questions about his identity during the whole Black Materia arc. It was a lot more large scale than Terra's "slave" relation to Kefka due to the device.

insecurities he suffered from were kept to his self, and he kept on a very strong demeanor. He was always up for the task, since the beginning of FFVII. And his real self doubt didn't kick in until LATER in the story.

Terra started off as a timid girl who was easily confused and frightened. She didn't start to mature until she learned more about herself.

So one started strong, went through a period of doubt, and regained confidence.

The other started weak and grew strong.

Kefka and Sephiroth both used to be renowned military figures. Both were rather reserved socially (though while Sephiroth was aloof, Kefka was shy) but still tolerable. Even their personality/heel-face turn switches were similar in nature (only, Kefka's was justified). Both attempted to and managed to gain a power that could ravage the world at a whim and both fused with the source of eternal, ethereal power. Final forms and attacks are similar as well.

Now I agree on the Kefka-Sephiroth military part, but not much beyond that. Did you play the initial FFVII? Sephiroth was social with both Cloud and Zack, asking Cloud about his hometown, and even confessing things about his own life.

He didn't isolate his self until the incident. It was there that he read false logs about the Cetra (whom he mistook

Sephiroth, maintaining his messiah complex after learning from the Cetra, wished to merge with the Lifestream & control the planet.
