Either way just wonderful Miguel, you're doing what all musicians want to do and playing for those of us who can no longer physically play well enough to perform like this. Thanks for your efforts, I hope you get all the gigs you want and need!
Well done, but you have to give credit to the real author of this adaptation. It's not a song of the Mystery, it's an adaptation by Krasimir Kyurkchiyski. It has been performed by the Mystery and also by Philip Koutev choir.
Thats the first time I've heard something like it.
I recognize perfectly the song! What a performance.
Congratulations for your perseverance and your courage to do it your way, and I thank you for that, Because If you hadnt done that way, I might never have had the privilege to hear something as incredibly beautiful as your interpretation.
Everyone I've shown this too is completely blown away. I especially like your non-electric "guest" which wins for me every time and gives that bottom-end swell that works so well. You are a bit wierd of course, but brilliant wierd! ;-)
That's interesting, many people who are not familiar with Bulgarian music that I showed the video think it sounds really strange. I guess for people who do know the song and are familiar with Bulgarian music it must sound also... different ;) Thank you very much my friend!
Quite a bass collection you have: 4001CS, Fender Jazz, "de-fretted" Fender Jazz ", Warwick Thumb 5, Zon Sonus Eight, Fender VI and if I recall correct a Fender P in addition to the Contra bass, and who knows what else you have in you room!! :-)
By the way the Zon 8 string have amazing deep growling sound, is it the same bass as on New Pictures? On New Pictures the sound is much brighter, but I guess it is mostly due to the fact you play mostly on the G -D strings there. but towards the end of New Pictures you climb to the E - A stings, and then I can hear some of the deep sounds you have here. But do you add some distortion/overdrive here to the Zon?
The New Pictures sound was totally clean. That way the Zon has an almost acoustic quality. For this piece I plugged it to the Sansamp, thus the dirtier growl. You can really trust your ears!!
Well Miguel, good to know my ear is kind of in tune! I'm not an educated maestro as you in music, so I can only guess such things :) It is not only the Levin part of KC which remind me of your playing here on the Contra bass, but also the combination of Wetton and David Cross, thus strange time signatures of bass, violin, well, and Fripps guitar and synth as well. Any way great "KC" tune, need only Bruford on the drums!
Most of my friends who really are not used to odd-time meter (whether it's rock or folk) really found this one rather strange. But somehow end up liking it. The harmonies and rhythms really can fool your brain :)) by the way this is a standard 4/4 followed by a 9/16. Peanuts - if you are Bulgarian :)))))
Hello Bob! Hope you feel more curious about Bulgarian music. Not so much guitars there, but will give you a lot of new musical challenges... and ideas;) Glad you liked it! Thanks so much.
When I wrote "New Pictures" for the Cyberan Khatru compilation - I already had it... so it must have been around 2000! Thanks for watching (btw your favourite section is mine too, plus the ending)
Bravo, Miguel! Your "Bass Choir" has a huge and haunting sound. I would love to hear The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" done with this setup! Thanks for sharing...Wes
Wow! The Miguel Bass Band!!! :-) With the Contra bass this song obtain some kind of King Crimson sound (Tony Levin)! Great performance as always Miguel!!!!
By the way, your reference to KC is not at all without sense. You should know Robert Fripp's interest in Bulgarian Folk, especially on odd-time signatures.
Fascinating, Miguel. And whoah, that's a huge double-bass you got there, buddy! It's really impressive to watch the whole ensemble playing their parts for this piece. You've caught my attention on this strange and overlooked music yet I couldn't manage to find this piece on YT. I guess I should search for it elsewhere. Great job once again!
Alex, simply searce "pilence pee" and you will get a result. a live performance by the London Bulgarian Choir, which consists of mostly english citizens who sing bulgarian music. The director I believe belongs(ed) to the original Bulgarian Choir. My other track (Svatba) you can find by searching "voix bulgares lisbon". However I really recommend listening to the historical 4AD recordings. They have a site too if you search for "bulgarianvoices". You won't waste your time. Good luck and thanks!
hI Paul, interesting you mentionel the Georgian choirs because funnily enough this year I heard it for the first time. Great music with lots of potential too. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, the video link and, as always, for listening.
I don't know the piece but it was very interesting watching how the different parts meshed. I love your stuff and love being introduced to new music so I am going to hunt this piece down.
Thank you Keith. I assure you it's wonderful. One of the greatest pieces of music ever written, for my taste. I am thinking whether it would be cool or plain heresy to mix in the original on another version, for people to get to know this kind of music...
Great idea!!! wonderful sound! I hope to see more from you in the future!
