If your fins are behind you and you are close to the bottom, you will kick up silt. This is rude and sloppy in open water and potetially deadly in a wreck or cave.
The idea of "Essentials" (or Fundamentals per GUE) is that you need a minimun degree of buoyancy/trim control, propulsion techiques, situational awareness, and team skills before you should even think to mess around with the "technical" stuff. Take a shortcut on your "platform" skills and you will suffer for the rest of your diving.
