Good review. After seeing Lady in the Water, I'm gonna avoid The Happening and The Last Airbender like the plague. I thought Lady in the Water was very underrated (so was The Village). His first three films (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs) were GREAT. Signs will be my favorite film from M. Night Shyamalan
1. Saying that you've seen more suspenseful Twilight Zone episodes than the Happening is kind of a strange criticism, because The Twilight Zone is famous for its suspense.
2. I've seen bits of the movie (so I'm not saying I'm an expert on it), but it seems pretty funny, actually. I think I can compare The Happening to the wonderful movie Spiderman 3. Both movies are, for the most part, action/thriller, BUT if taken from the point of view of a comedy, they are really enjoyable to watch.
@MrKrevlornswath I think that the most notable part of the Twilight Zone reference is the "30 minute" part. In half an hour they can work in edge-of-the-seat suspense, dramatic tension, and a satisfying conclusion that answers the questions posed by the plot. This movie, which was well over 30 minutes, couldn't.
This movie's premise might have been better suited to being an episode of something like Outer Limits or the Twilight Zone, actually.
This movie wasn't that bad. It's not your typical braindead movie which is geared towards dumb people (there are a lot of these.. see the video poster).
Okay Okay, when will people on Youtube understand that calling people names and just saying things like "this movie sucks", without giving a reason, will NEVER in the slightest win your argument. If you want to effectively convince someone else of your point of view, give logical reasons. DUH!
The Happening! Yes, your wallet was just sucked dry by yet another crap Hollywood movie, and there is No Refunds for Movies. If you like movies where the wind is supposed to be scary, this movie is for you. There were so many flaws, it was like a movie was made with no plot, no script, just a few scenes of people walking around for 1 1/2 hours. Avoid all future movies by the makers of the Happening. Let them crash and burn.
couldn't agree more with this review. m. night's latest should NOT have been released theatrically. i thought the happening was a B movie at best, and rivaled the travesties often found within uwe boll films. sad to see his skills deteriorate from great movies like the unbreakable to this horrible waste the happening.
by the way, can you review other older movies that have been released in like the 90' or even 80's. i saw you mention monster squad once. can you review that?
the movie was ok but didnt make much sense. whats wif the end? theyre standing outside in the wind and they dont get infected! this film was pretty stupid.
Let me restate my earlier comment. I was walkin along yesterday an thort heck. If actually paid to see dis at da cinema it wudda been maybe slightly faux pas. U pay to see action n adventure on the whole, n dis was not dose tings. I saw it in the comfort of my home and I must say if this was the standard of all made for TV movies den dere wud be a real case for a FOX TV channel (if there is.. wotever).
You know this movie had a good Idea but it sucked in the way it had absolutly no meaning! There was no point to make this movie. Also he doesn't know how to end a movie or a story...
The happening was odd and scary. Good things that I am not gonna watch it again. I'll make my little kids go see that movie and ending up having nightmares from it! ehehhe
Dude, unecessarily harsh!!! It was a ride I didnt mind at all. If it wasnt for the crazed haunting woman at the end I could happily watch it all day. Wot do you want... just, erm, unhappenings? This was happening as far as I can say. Hopefully there will be some follow ons.
Its a shame that it sucks. I liked the idea, but ideas are not always good when put to the test. M night is definatley loosing his touch. 6th sense was great, I enjoyed signs but the village was garbage. I hope his next film gets him back on his feet.
Loved your review! I agree, this movie sucked. It seemed like a bad, extended twilight zone episode. There was a strange paradox going on in this film because he tried very hard to build up suspense yet he gave away the explanation so quickly
I saw this film last week. The whole scene when Walburg is talking the an artificial plant as if he is making contact with an alien is both simultaniously painful and hilarious at the same time. The FAQ section has only 4 answers on IMDB meaning that no-one cares whats Happening. Sweet i just did it to.
This movie was terrible. The acting was terrible. Ugh ... The ending specu;ation that the earth is turning against mankind on purpose because we are destroying the earth was ridiculas. Dont waste your money.
My other half and I enjoyed this movie. It had enough suspense to keep you wondering, and even at one point made you wonder if this could really happen. To each their own, I guess. :)
Duck1987-that happens to me too sometimes, I imagined how it would be if it something like that would really happen in New York, I guess it's not that hard to do considering we've been through so much similar to it. But that feeling was self imposssed I didn't think M night captured the true horror and frantic attitudes of people.
I agree. He could wait till the last 10 mintes of the movie to let us know that it was the plants all along
Also, I don't know whether it would be better if people not only killed themselves but actually suffered pain while they were killing themselves.
Because those who were killing themselves were oblivious to their pain, maybe that's why you wouldn't feel for them as much - kinda like when we see zombies get killed - they WERE people, they still walk but they just don't care if they die
As The Spy says "Well, this was a disappointment!" I was hoping this movie was going to be great as my brother was really looking forward to this after watching the trailer. Mr. Furyofthefilmfan I may sound like a broken record but is there any update on a Funny Games U.S and Blue Velvet Review?
wow, i was really hoping this would be the one to bring him back to "sixth sense" status as far as his writing goes. thankfully, i i'll get to keep the hours i would have lost forever to his nonesense this time around ((still pissed off about the village. i mean come on!! just a reservation?? really thats all you got M Night? )).anyways, thanks fury, you never cease to deliver spot on judgement. keep up the good work brother.
cstrand31- I understood what m night was trying to say with the village and keeping people in control and in the dark through fear but he almost NEVER has the balls to go full out with it and make something memorable.
SurooshX- Yup, like 2 weeks ago I announced it, been in bed rest for a while I forced myself to see the hulk which I don't regret. Been tired a lot since the body is still recovering, I'm about 2 weeks from going back to the gym.
See, I was hoping for something along the lines of, "There's nothing really happening," or, "The happening is the AUDIENCE WATCHING THE MOVIE." Actually, that would have been much cooler...
thats sad to hear that it sucked. Shyamalan is one of my favorites. Everyone said the village sucked, probably because they went in expecting a horror film (like all the trailers promised), and got more of a mystery. I still liked it.
