F-18C/D is 4th generation. It won the contest between other 4th generation multirole fighters. The Finnish version includes ALQ-165 and the better APG-73 radar. It was in fact a very good decision because of future upgrades such as JHMCS + AIM-9X combination, AN/AAR-50, AN/AAS-38 NITE Hawk FLIR and other advanced features that certain neighbouring countries could only dream of, esp. with their current budget cuts.

That video said shit about it's performance, you dont think the blue angels have a "better" F-18 that suits their specific task. For instance, they have much better engines (more power). Still thinks the Gripen would ride eights around the standard f-18.

According to the FAQ found at Blue Angels website, their F-18s are standard. They have the cannon removed, a smoke-oil tank installed and one spring installed on the stick, thats all. F-18 has better thrust/weight ratio than Gripen. Maybe you should consider that, before saying a Gripen can outperform an F-18.

That was the A/B-models, the C/D versions have a 130kN engine and can supercruise Mach 1.28 at 30Kft.

The new Gripen E/F will be equipped with the engine from the superhornet(+25% thrust).

Super Hornet has two 98kN engines. If Gripen gets one of those it will have the maximum thrust of 98kN. The Finnish F-18 (soon F/A-18) has 160kN of maximum thrust, as it has two engines.

One of the Swedish Air-force's requirements was that the aircraft must be able to land on and take-off from a normal road. So the Gripen was designed to be small, light and maneuverable at the cost of payload. That's one way to do it....

Have googled 4th gen, and it seems that what is and is not a 4th gen fighter is up to the manufacturer. Can't find a good answer what you need to fullfil to be 4th or 5th gen.

All I know is that SAAB says that the gripen is the first 4th gen in service.

This hornet is from that airbase near Kuopio. Airbase is called Rissala and the squadron sign Lynx on the front tells where its from. Lynx is the "logo" of Fighter Squadron 31 based at Rissala.

That was the "lazy" solo program I think. There is a faster paced air show program aswell that was flown in some other airshow. Maybe Jyväskylä 2001. Nevertheless, nice plane, nice airfield and nice finnish crowd :)
