  • WEirdest thing i eva ewatched

  • WTF, the soldiers have guns?

  • @IROCK3556 At the time the directors wanted to give a more modern perspective on the story. It was also originally written like that for the musical. It made the show more of a hit because it wasn't just a regular bible story. It gave it an "edge".

  • Does anyone else remember Dennis DeYoung of STYX performing Pilate in the 25th anniversary touring production of SUPERSTAR with Ted Neely as Christ, Carl Anderson as Judas and Syreeta Wright as Mary?? I saw it in NYC at MSG. He was excellent and had the perfect sound for it.

  • i love this but it is mean that thay whip him

  • hey its jafar!

  • i like the sunglasses in biblical times

  • Enough of the religious debating. Can someone tell me how to get a pimped-out white jacket with tassles like Judas'???

  • Sexy Pilate. <3

  • Besides from Jesus I have deep respect for Pilatus in this movie, he tries to save him in a way, he tries to understand him. Respect. And ofcourse he is a amazing singer!

  • @OGJRebeL In Mel Gibsons film The Passion , both Pilate and Herod come across well ,the Jewish high Priests don't but I always felt sorry for Pliate , I think that is where the phrase between a rock and a hard place came from .

  • Also one also has to wonder if Jesus and Judas concocted the whole situation up in order to save what they believed in i say this because unless Jesus was a clairvoyant or able to predict the future with uncanny accuracy which i do not believe he seemed to know a lot about his future betrayal more than he should of done and at no point did he take steps to prevent it.

In those days and its true of today people and even good people are and were willing to sacrifice themselves for a cause

  • the original Pilate was not scared of the crowed Rome had to justify its killing of Jesus when it became christian so they had to re invent him to make it look like they had to do it because the crowd said so so it is a bit of Roman political propaganda the real Pilate was a harsh Judicator of Roman law and probably did not think twice in the sentencing of Jesus

  • Its nice to hear the story from Judas point of view for a change

  • lol some phrases pilates says are said to been used by him during the actual trial like quid est veritas (what is truth and ecce homme (behold a man)

  • Comment removed

  • I'd rather prefer Ian Gillan as Jesus.Yes,both Jesus and Pilate look humane. But what is the TRUTH?

  • 7:08 :)

  • WOW !! POWERFUL !!!

  • 3:19 is the most epic moment from this paticular scene! Mary magdalene love for jesus really showed, I mean that's the MOTHER of all SCREAMS!!!

  • people who say this is blasphemous are so wrong i was thinking to convert and when i listend to these songs mostly superstar i finnaly converted from buhdism to christianity

  • 6:05 is the best moment in anything. Ever.

  • Pilate's voice - OMG <3

  • You can see the crane lowering Judas.

  • pilate = real screamo!

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • In Robert graves' I, Claudius, Tiberius is the Emperor in Rome. There is a great pathological and greedy witch hunt for traitors under Sageanus. Rome was a mess.

  • @rgaleny - Absolutely right. In theology class I remember reading once that "We have no king but Caesar" would have been taken by Pilate as a threat. Allowing a rebellion to take root in your prefecture was seen as a common tool of traitors to instigate the downfall of the current Caesar. Pilate would have taken it as such - if he turned Jesus free, and the Jews rebelled under him, Tiberius would have killed him (Pilate).

  • @desnibelungen Thanks for the reply. Hey, I wrote a long piece on the evolution of Christianity on youtube. @ frank zappa Heavenly Bank account. 13 or so paragraphs. check it out and tell me what you think. It's a humanist take in the end so don't expect any preaching. If Jesus was a man, what then?

  • The Romans didn't need a reason to crucify anybody.

  • I was in this musical in the tenth grade, I wish I could do it all over again! SUCH a great soundtrack

  • you have nothing in your hands, any power you have, comes to you far beyond, everything is fixed and you cant change it!

  • @methd2madness You're a fool, Jesus Christ! How can I help you?

  • @Interessant11 was just curious if anyone knew that. Would be an interesting turn of events if Jesus could have actually been saved that way.

  • @alsowikk

    Welease Bwian! hehe

You should see the movie "Life of Brian" there you have the law that you describe ;)

  • The 2000 version kind of sucks... especially pilate, jesus, and judas. They messed up all the major roles. ESPECIALLY JUDAS.

  • IMHO the 2000 version is so much better.

  • I'm probably wrong but wasn't there some law back in roman times that let one prisoner be freed based off the equivelent of a crowd choosing between them...and Jesus wasn't chosen to be freed(has in the crowd chose to leave him to die)

  • this is just one of the most memorable parts of film i've ever seen. like out of everything

  • More christian agitprop. The REAL Pilate was a butcher and a thug and a pillager and was removed not long after these events took place because even the Emperor of the time, Tiberius, a known degenerate by that time, thought Pilate was so much of a thug and thief that he was impugning the "good" name of Rome.

  • Does that one guy have a gun?

  • I love all the discussions going on. Was I really the only one that had problems focusing on the messages? There is just way too much going on.

  • One of my favorite things about Jesus Christ Superstar is it took the reviled figures of Judas and Pilate and made them so dynamically human. It makes the whole story so much more complex and affecting, interesting and heartbreaking.

  • @TrelliaChan I think the story shows how human they both were, and how helpless they really were in the big scheme of things.

  • Comment removed

  • @kainnobaka I'm afraid I can't agree with you.Pilate was far from being helpless. He did his best to save Jesus and he COULD do it but..Remember his words:"Don't let me stop your great self-destruction.Die if you want to..."?I do respect Pilate.

  • @TrelliaChan God used Judas as a tool and Pilate was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Pilate died a Christian in exile. I'm glad the writers made them human

  • @TrelliaChan I find it interesting that all of the traditional villains, save Herod, come out looking good. Judas and the priests - completely valid concerns about the consequences of the messianic bent Jesus is taking...Pilate, completely understandable reluctance to play his part in the gruesome theatrics of putting what he sees as (at worst) a harmless loon to death.

Makes Herod's remaining a straight up cackling villain a bit interesting.

  • judas makes some good points

  • pilate didnt do anything wrong, he was just scared of the crowd... period

  • @qwertyytrewq71 Actually Pilate is thought to have tried to save Jesus but when he saw it was impossible he handed him over to help relation between him and the church. He likely regretted condemning an innocent man but saw the benefits of what he did as a good justification which at that time and from a non believers perspective it was. I have to wonder what he was thinking 3 days later.

  • If these guys where jewish, how come there's an Ankh behind pilates at 0:52?

  • @denkairl1 Pilate isn't a Jew he is a Roman.

  • @MermaidBlueFins I know, I had a thought behind it, can't remember though...

  • LMFAO at 0:47, the guard is like "FML....people!"

  • Herod seems to be having a ball.

  • .....FORTY STRIPES he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.

IN OTHER WORDS, this was a rule sent from God to Moses, back in the day. And when the Romans whipped Jesus, Pilate counted 39 lashes instead of FORTY so as to not go over 40, just in case he miscounted during the lashing.

  • remember Caesar you have a duty to keep the peace so crucify him! remember Caesar you'll be demoted you'll be deported CRUCIFY HIM!

  • 12 people didn't even survive 39 lashes..

  • This is very powerul to see, such a crowd turn on him, seeing a reluctant Pilate trying to rest the crowd and a horrified Mary being dragged away by the other disciples.

  • This is very powerful to see such a crowd turn on one man.

  • THE THEME SUPERSTAR.......is as classic as classic can be!

  • Yeshuwa is the true massiah he is also the only beggoten son of YeVHaH

  • Je trouve que si on mets la CC , et on voit les sous titres il y a des fautes d'orthographes ou souvent des mots en anglais qui ne sont pas traduit

  • We turn to Rome to sentence Nazareth. We have no law to put a man to death. We need him crucified, it's all you have to do. We need him crucified, it's all you have to do.

  • Damn, that scream at 3:19 sends shivers down my spine :/

  • 7.05 you see his underware xd

  • Mary Magdalene's scream just expresses all the pain of the people who still loved Jesus and believed in him. So powerful and terrible. I hate to see this scene of the lashes because I find it more impressive than in movies like "The Passion of Christ" who should be more realistic...

  • @LadyQGinny true enough, it's so hard to get cinematographic creativity like that without a 2000 year old template to work with... soo soo good

  • i love this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I want to hear Judas, Jesus, and Pilate all do a song together. 3 amazing voices singing one song. I'm getting tingles just thinking about it.

  • 9:05 to 9:10

    Epic panning moment

  • This is the best scene in the movie. Powerful, terrifying and heartbreaking. Look, I don't believe in God or the Bible (however I am pretty sure Jesus really did exist, just not in the sense religion says), but the story is still a good one.

We can see how Pilate really doesn't want to do this. How much it hurts him. Yet he does, because the people ask him to. How quickly they turned against Jesus at the convenient time. How cynical.

And holy shit, both Pilate and Judas got some pipes!

  • I would pay just to see the guy who played Judas sing with the angels in the back.

  • You innocent puppet!

  • This might be weird to say, but I want that music to play every time I count out loud.

  • I want Judas' shirt. XD

  • Una delle scene più epiche della storia del cinema.

  • There's a few suspected reasons for only 39 lashes.

    39 plagues of man(only 39?)

40 would supposedly kill a man and therefore be a death sentence.

Any more than 39 and the punisher would be punished.

  • Pilate: You're a fool Jesus Christ. How can I help you?

Jesus: Well, not throwing on my bleeding back is a good start.

  • I'm still stunned that Ted Neely was originally cast as Jesus' understudy rather than placed as the lead role outright. One look at those soulful, sad, piercing eyes along with that golden voice and it's clear he was born to play this role.

  • At 7:18 the music seems A little less conversation by Elvis

  • Pilate, having gone his life above the common crowd, finds himself consciously lowering himself to a commoner's (albeit a well-publicized one) perspective.

  • I love this movie/play, and I know that some people have very strong feelings about it and whether or not the whole thing is sacrilegious. However, if you just look at it for what it is, you'll see that it's an amazing story with amazing music. For the record, the only part I really find sacrilegious is that they gave the best song to Judas. Of course, that has a lot to do with the brilliance of Carl Anderson...

  • Why did the rabble suddenly turn on him? Because he wouldn't fight Rome?

  • This shows that Pilate didn't want Jesus to die and was trying to convince the people that he didn't do anything wrong. He's innocent and if they wanted him out of the way he would put them in jail. But the crowd wouldn't have it. Pilate had Jesus beat. The crowd basically blackmailed Pilate saying they would get him deported and he would lose his job. His hands were tied. Jesus even told him that, there was no way out. I sort of feel bad for Pilate but not all the way.

  • i love Pilates.

  • The intensity of this scene makes it one of my favorites. Everyone is screaming, there's so much noise and the king is really trying to help Christ. I LOVE IT!

  • Damn Pilates a good Singer too

  • Comment about the guns: The director deliberately inserted anachronistic elements, which are really metaphors. I'll let you smart people figure it out. You can't look to this movie for accuracy and it was never intended to do so. If you get the gist of the message and enjoy the music, then you got it. This movie is definitely in my top 10 of all times.

  • Didn't Know they had "GUNS" Back 2000 years ago?? HMM?? This movie is a JOKE!

  • @SuperWilliam2424 That's the only thing about this movie that makes me sick!!

  • @SuperWilliam2424

It's supposed to be a sort of modern take on it....you don't know anything about the musical, do you?

  • @broadwaymelody33 ~ They should have gone all the way & had Light Savers from Star wars?? LoL Now that would be a Sort of Modern Musical??? :) :)

  • When you see these people laughing while whipping him these people were evil

  • Best musical ever

  • jesus. you are gourgos. Coul we start agatin??

  • There was a saying in the other youtube video that Pilate deliberately stop at 39 lashes because it was commonly believed that 40 lashes would kill a man. Pilate does not want Jesus to die in his hands, so he stopped short of one. *credit to the original owner of the opinion somewhere in the net*

btw it is commonly accepted that Jesus was 33 years old when this happened.

  • @lumutmenjulurrr 39 lashes was the common practise because if they were to go over 40 it would have broken Jewish law. They stopped at 39 in case of a miscount

  • @lumutmenjulurrr It wasn't that Pilate chose to stop at 39; rather, it was Roman policy that the maximum number of lashes was 40 (any more was considered lethal). Exceeding this limit was itself a crime carrying a serious punishment, so they would always stop at 39 in case they had miscounted.

  • @lumutmenjulurrr thats not how it happened in passion of the christ he must have had close to bloody 309 lashes and still horribly alive lol!

  • @blueleaf1717 There are often differences between the book and the film interpretation. This is no exception.

  • @Binerexis where did u learn that btw, that 40 lashes could kill a man? was that in any part of the bible?

  • @blueleaf1717 That isn't what I said (or anything close to what I said) but I did a bit of research into the topic of "Why 39 lashes? Could 40 lashes kill a man?" and found that is was a commonly held conception in the time of the Roman Empire and before that 40 lashes would be enough to kill someone.

  • @Binerexis ok so where did you find this research?

  • @blueleaf1717 A library, funnily enough. I didn't expect someone online to be so militarily opposed to the idea (or just in favour of the idea of arguing for no real reason) so I didn't make a bibliography of sources. Then again, this seems like the kind of thing which is probably all over the internet so feel free to google it and take the discussion to somewhere where you'll probably find it more useful.

  • @Binerexis I'm not arguing with anyone dude i only asked you where you got the research thats all.. i hope we're cool man i didn't mean to be annoying i just think it's interesting to know new things

  • @lumutmenjulurrr

In the Bible, Deuteronomy 25:1-3 (Chapter 25, Verse 1 through 3), it reads:

If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number........

  • I still don't understand why 39 lashes? Was that how old he was?

  • Who else thinks of Boney M. at 7:57?

  • I bet all the angels have funky white afros in heaven. At least I hope so.

  • Mary's acting in here. I can just feel her pain...

  • In modern times, this movie helps young people understand better:

It's easier to think you can do nothing - not even when it's in your hand and you think there is no crime to punish! More than that; you can use the excuse that you have done what asked by the majority - no matter your conscious is telling you that it is wrong! You had even the forgiveness of your victim! Are we ever learn? Or from Judas to Pilate we prefer to let people who trouble our conscious to be better silenced, crucified?

  • @gabi925 But there was nothing Pilate could do. He tried his best to save Jesus, but what could he do without endangering his own life? Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins.

  • @Tanglephish No one ask you to walk in the moccasins of Jesus Christ, if you consider him a fool - real Christians do not, otherwise there will be no Christianism. Are you wearing the Pilate's moccasins and you have to decide against your consciousness and the law you are empowered to apply, while been in power, because you fear for your life? Judas'moccasins must be from worse quality as he needed money... just a lower level of betraying the trust granted through the position someone is in.

  • Why does the people ask for Jesus to be crucified? I just fall to understand that.

  • @terenas5 they were scared that he would rule b/c of the term "King of the Jews* and they were used to having the Romans.. hoped this helped!

  • @CHUCKZLORD is that a rhetorical question or... did you really want an answer?

  • i lov how u see the crane as judas comes down lol

  • @123ftdc I think its called intelligent design

  • it is funny how the study of the Golden Bough, then this film, makes me a better Catholic.

  • herod is so funny lol

  • so im just curious... i believe in evolution but i believe god got the ball rollin on the concept. What is that called?

  • @123ftdc It's called what I believe in. Believing science is man's explaining what God does.

  • @123ftdc more than halfway to atheism. Now consider why Judas was sent to hell for betraying Jesus when he started the events that stopped a war and gave Jesus what he wanted.

  • What is the guy's name red/purple cape?

  • @waterskigal1 Pontius Pilate

  • Nice, nice, nice , beautifull song!!! I love Barry Dennen like Pilate. He look so arogant! I can´t express by words my emotions from this song...

  • Sorry for bringing this up

Does anyone else think that Pilate kinda has a crush on Jesus in the movie?

Certain parts of this scene made me think so

  • @Sandra3594 He didn't hate him. The lyrics indicate that Pilate didn't really want to execute him because... he didn't do anything wrong. I doubt there's a romantic element to it, just a desire to help (but he's got a job to do, obviously).

  • @Sandra3594 Wow! You're not the only one who think so, but you're definitely very brave to admit it ;)

  • Incredible! Fantastic scenes and musical performances; pure Genius! Thanks for uploading!

  • why do the romans have guns?

  • I always liked watching the movement of Judas' clothes and their tassels.

  • pretty catchy.

  • beware the deadly Roman legionaire guards - in their tickle-me pink tank tops, camo pants, chrome construction helmets, and ak-47s...

  • after the 39 lashes

  • A classic!!!

  • ces't terrible

  • One of the most moving scenes in the opera. Gives me goose-bumps. It perfectly shows how little it can take to turn a group of people into a mob. TY

  • One of the most moving scenes in the whole opera. TY for posting.

  • ...io me ne lavo le mani!!!

  • A classic!!!

  • It seems King Herod laughs himself to his dead..

  • i know i shouldnt be jamming to him getting beat but the song is just so good :P

  • We Have No King But Caesar

  • That scream-singing Pilate does as he washes his hands is sooo chilling, even after all these years.

  • Heck, I'm an atheist, but the music in this has been among my favorite music since I was "on fire for God" 40 years ago!

  • Magdalena's cry T_T

  • i allways cry

  • Who played Herod? he's pimping!

  • @DCdabest Joshua Mostel.

  • @ChibiTristan

    Cheers!

  • I feel bad for Pilate. He had to condemn Jesus to death when he knew it was wrong. In real life, however, Pilate was a maniac, who would happily have had people crucified for nothing. Apparently, he was made into a good man in the bible so as not to upset the Romans, who were in power at the time when it was written.

  • Wow. 1:29

The first time I see this and Pilate reminds me of Stewie Griffin?XD

  • i remeber doing this show as a kid and i got a cold before opening night

  • What version is this?? I mean i know its the 1973 one but this version sounds ever so slightly more upbeat than all the other versions on youtube.

  • 6:42 and after rocked my socks off. Not that I was wearing socks.

  • I have way more empathy for Pilate and Judas then I do for Jesus in this movie

  • judas is ozzy osbourne

  • @WeLoveYouJesus85 hi george

    im bill

  • If you want to learn what Jesus and the Bible are really saying, search "truth contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present (with religion) and read what it says. Pass it on to everyone you can reach.

  • Pilate is the best part of this movie and the original album
