I remember the end of his show as he walked through each spotlight and it going off with at the end his famous saying of, "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." The feeling he put behind those words affected me as a young teenager. This song was one of my favorites growing up. I guess in the back of my mind I knew that life had its seasons.
The letters in fancy script in the railings left and right of the window platform, "C D" might indicate what television show this was or possibly the name of the ensemble that is backing him up. Can anyone tell me what the "C D" stands for?
@MaxPennington The "C D" stands for "Club Durant," the New York nightclub Jimmy Durante opened in the 1920's and where he and others performed for many years. The musical parts of the Jimmy Durante Show were filmed at the RKO Studios on a "Club Durant" stage set in memory of the old club.
If you love this song, as I do, also see and hear Eddie Albert's rendition, in which he also tells the story behind it, from "knickerbokker Holiday". you'll come away with a new understanding of what it (and life) is all about.
What huge Schnozzola ? All I can see and hear with this, is a handsome old man (like myself) singing a beautiful song (one of my favorites). Rest in peace, Jimmy, you will live forever in the hearts of those who love you. (And I am only one of many).
I saw this performance when it was telecast, and soon afterward ordered the LP album in which it was featured. Perhaps my experience then was the same as yours is now: until Durante performed the song, I had never really heard it. Rather, I had only experienced Kurt Weill's music and had paid no attention to Maxwell Anderson's lyrics. It wasn't until Jimmy Durante subordinated the melody to the lyrics and spoke (not sang) the words that I heard "September Song" for the first time.
The late great Jimmy Durante and his songs touched me all my life. Thanks to YouTube, Jimmy is still around doing his usual marvelous thing. Stan Kossen
When I was a young man, I always wondered why my mother who was also a singer held this song in such reverance. You have to live this song to truly sing this song..Jimmy lived it as did my mother and now in the autumn of my life, I can sing it because I too have lived it.....
He was a giant in show business when my parents were kids & I'm 63. I can remember seeing him on tv specials & as a guest but not his tv show even tho we had a tv. I was too young a kid to recoginse his greatness. There is no one of his stature that is on tv, radio or anything else today. A one of a kind. Mr. D. Thanks for posting this beautiful video. I'm playing piano for a group of retired journalists today, and they requested that I play this song. I'd never heard of it before. Now I know why they love it! What a tear-jerker.
@Pianomam Coincidentally, "September Song" came from a Broadway play that was made into a movie about a young journalist... who gets the girl, over the older gent who sings her this song. (But I think he gets to sing the song to other girls, optimistically, at the end of the show.)
One of the sweetest souls in entertainment. When Jimmy sings "September Song" it fills my head and my heart with beautiful memories of how wonderful entertainment with heart and soul could be. A beautiful song sung as only Jimmy could do it.
People have so little appreciation for all that came before not realizing that we are who we are and use them as a springboard for future endeavors. Jimmy Durante is a classic example. He was not handsome, short or even a good singer but he had magic! He overcame all the Hollywood stereotypes and he shined at doing it. And he was the best at this song because he looked the part of a man in his September years and therefore made it believable. I still miss his charm and humor.
hackberryflat..I agree. Although I always liked Jimmy, as I get older you realize their value to society and entertainment. This song always made me a little sad when he sang it but now it applies to me and I'm glad he did. I do not want to disparage todays young stars but there just aren't that many to compete with these last of the vaudevillians. I also watched James Cagney doing Yankee Doodle and was just facinated.
@oyde Thks...I agree w/you about today's "stars" being unable to compete with Durante's generation of entertainers - they try to keep rocking - seemingly no ability to enlarge the scope of what they do - the ballad singers can always sing ballads, but rockers can't always rock - "the times, they are a changing..." isn't correct - it was a verse by a young man unaware of what it's like to reminisce. Durante could - it's an awareness that occurs only after time goes by.
As a young man, I had low esteem for Jimmy, but I liked the song for it's poetry. Now, in my September, I realize Jimmy is the best performer for this song - it must be viewed from"event horizon"; that point in time where you can see your shortening future and lengthly past at the same moment.
I hear you, man. I am in my 60s, so I guess i am in September. and, your perspective on life begins to change. Especially when you start losing your best friends to cancer and other later-life ailments!!
@lgcrooks /// Sorry for the delay in answering your comments - thks for your attn. and empathy. I was so moved by the imagery of these ballads; as a boy, then a teen and later a young man; but, I felt angst when listening to them. I liked the imagery of the poetry, but now I find the cliches are true - getting old helps to understand it even better - no angst, only peaceful rememberances.
I have been working on this song recently. Thanks for posting this vidm, because it is so great to hear a magnificent performer like Durante. Nobody can copy him, but you can learn from his attention to detail, and total commitement to whatever he does.
Thanks so much for posting this! Jimmy Durante was one of a kind. What a difference from the many bland, mass-produced performers that are popular today.
The man who did not have a good voice but we all wanted to hear him sing and perform. He had so much charisma. Loved to hear him sing because it came from the heart and was loaded with charm. I miss him dearly and the many others in the golden era. Thanks "Jimmy wherever you are."
I did get to see him in person once at The Hollywood Bowl. He was great. Listen to the vocalists behind him on this song. That is such a wonderful blend of voices.
The prettiest/saddest version i've ever heard is by Jonny Fair. For me, this one, Jimmys version on vinyl is second. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. It made me cry it was so beautifull...
My father explain me who was Jimmy Durante.. and he invited me to discover.. I´m impressed.. It´s a very special sensation hear this song and see.. Jimmy Durante..
Proof positive that heart and soul are more important in a pop singer than suppleness of voice. What tender emotions he could convey with that raspy instrument of his! He was a boyhood favorite of mine, and I still miss him after all these years.
Oh, I didn't know Durante personally, though it sometimes felt as if I did. I used to imitate some of his comedy routines for my grade school friends while Durante was still active, but I only came across his pop song interpretations about ten years ago. They knocked me out -- sort of like discovering that Babe Ruth was also a concert pianist. He was one of a kind; I hope younger generations discover him and keep his name alive.
so do i....and johnny carson was not even a Late Late Late Late show host yet....and Who In The Heck is the Conan O'Brian....Durante is rolling in his grave I think.......yep....the heart and soul goes on....thank you for caring
My first hero, followed by Roy Rogers, followed by Superman.
How excellent it is to live in a time when one can access this kind of performance from so long ago; how gratifying it is to read and enjoy all of these comments, and feel reassurance that quality always endures, and never stops being appreciated.
The goodnight Mrs Calabash routine that Jimmy performed according to Paul Harvey's The Rest Of The Story was dedicated to a waitress he met thining he had no career in show business as he was going home quite discouraged. She waited on him and told him he had what it took and that he should go back and try again. He believed her and did just that. Immediately things changed and he wanted to thank her but could not locate her. The routine was his way for her to get in touch with him .
Very full! Although who knows? He was a comedian, in his many movies he could have said it. I remember this man since the earliest years of my life. I saw him in a Movie when I was around 9 yrs old and thought he was very funny. Later on I realised he was a talented pianist, the comedy ( as opposed to 'very funny')was a little lost on me. Having said all that, he should be remembered as an all round very entertaining man
Hi there Molly! I hate to disagree. Jimmy's version was the version with all the Pathos of an aging man, and so it should be. Frank's version was just a sentimental song
hi, I see what you mean, and thank you for the comment, which brought me back to this video, which I am totally enjoying at this moment. Happiest of New Years to you and yours.
Well to answear to your question, mostly because Jimmy Durante =!(does not equal) Jessica Alba xD . But i don't know how do you find this clip so funny, it's more melancholyc if you ask me.
What a world this would be if Jimmy could bring every one together, especially those that think about or contemplate divorse or seperation. Ask yourself did all of you give it a chance?
I guess we all have songs that move us, are our favorites, and there are so many, it's hard to choose. But for me, this version of September Song by Jimmy Durante will always bring happiness, tears, and fond memories of a wonderful performer.
What an incredibly moving performance! No voice, no looks, no tricks, but some artists have an instinct for communicating from their heart to yours. Durante does it here with his "tell it like it is" phrasing, but even more with his movement and posture - that of an aging man eager to make the most of love in the time that he understands will some day run out. My guess is that after this, the next "good" singer I hear performing this song will seem insipid and insincere.
He has no singing voice, but he does seem an endearing kind of guy of a bygone era. I am 32 and like this stuff of his. I did enjoy his "Frosty the Snowman" song as a child. Maybe that's what did it.

if people gave my previous post a thumbs down because of my somewhat pungent language, I apologize, but the fact still remains Jimmy Durante is 1000000 times more talented than the vast majority of todays "entertainers"

What did Durante say to the groupies?
"And you bitches t'ought my nose was big! Ah-cha-cha-cha"

the new joker in batman: the dark knight.
is it my mistake or is "why so serious" a durante quote????
i've been telling people it is!
so just how full of it am i folks?
sillywabbit1349 3 years ago

What was the original date for this show?
Does anyone have a clip from the 12/31/55 show???

in my mind, everyone else compares to Jimmy. But do love Frank Sinatra's version too. Thanks so much for the great video.
Molly9094 3 years ago
Hi there Molly! I hate to disagree. Jimmy's version was the version with all the Pathos of an aging man, and so it should be. Frank's version was just a sentimental song

I guess we all have songs that move us, are our favorites, and there are so many, it's hard to choose. But for me, this version of September Song by Jimmy Durante will always bring happiness, tears, and fond memories of a wonderful performer.
Molly9094 3 years ago
What an incredibly moving performance! No voice, no looks, no tricks, but some artists have an instinct for communicating from their heart to yours. Durante does it here with his "tell it like it is" phrasing, but even more with his movement and posture - that of an aging man eager to make the most of love in the time that he understands will some day run out. My guess is that after this, the next "good" singer I hear performing this song will seem insipid and insincere.

Jimmy Durante was a once in a lifetime performer. There will never be another like him. I loved him more than words can ever say.

He has no singing voice, but he does seem an endearing kind of guy of a bygone era. I am 32 and like this stuff of his. I did enjoy his "Frosty the Snowman" song as a child. Maybe that's what did it.

Please see Jimmy in the old movie, The Man Who Came to Dinner. He plays a character named Banjo that is based on Harpo Marx. He's really good in it.

if people gave my previous post a thumbs down because of my somewhat pungent language, I apologize, but the fact still remains Jimmy Durante is 1000000 times more talented than the vast majority of todays "entertainers"
