  • They also have the 50mm 1.0

  • @quocngo91 True, but they dont make them anymore. Ive seen a couple on Ebay for $5000 or $6000.

  • Hi Michael,

I've got 50mm-1.8 one. When I use it for head shoots 1.8 aperture's dof is sometimes could be insanely thin and hard to control it.Sometimes focus length Iess than a cm.I didn't use 1.4 or 1.2 and can't imagine those:-)

What aperture value do you suggest for headshoots? For nice dof and sharp images

    Great video by the way:-)

  • @Megavoltt I hear you- Ever try Manually Zoon focusing in Live View? I do it all the time and makes it easy to dial in a sharp focus.

  • Got it.Thanks.I use 60D.I'm sure more focusing points cameras better focusing systems. But in those apertures is it still hard to control dof.Do you still use manual focusing?

  • @Megavoltt Yes- in live view, with Zooming. You dont have to recompose so it allows you to nail it. I cover the technique on my "Advanced Photography Techniques" DVD. Best wishes

  • I think the difference it is more than just the f stop. The optical quality must Be something to considering when you are about to buy a lense. Chromatical aberrations, Sharpness, Contrast Flare

  • Thanks Micheal

  • Micheal, hiya again, having viewed this clip too, if one was to purchase an EF75-300m 4-5.6 III (is this a good lens. It's retailing for about £110. Would or should I still consider purchasing the canon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens too?

  • @sanjserif121 Yes! These are completely different lenses in what they do. 50 1.8 or 1.4 are great for low light and portraits, 70-300 better for outdoor sports and nature.

  • YOU ARE A GOD !

  • thanks for the tip!

  • hey mike great educational vids btw! i just upgraded my xsi to a 7D recently as well as going from my 50mm 1.8 to the 1.4 that i've had for just over a year. the 1.8 teaches u so much how to frame shots as compared to zooming in w a non-prime. i haven't used the 1.4 yet but i can only imagine the results!!!

  • Thanks for the pointers. Good video.

  • Yes, I use the 50mm 1.4 Canon together with Kenko extension tubes for shooting great macro shots!..and, the BOKEH is nothing short of sensational!..

When I first used this lens, I could not believe that I was getting this great bokeh with this

lens. I would always call this lens, "my magic lens"....so, save your money and then buy one!..

  • thanks that's what i wanted to hear am going for the 50mm 1.4 then..

  • IM A LITTLE CONFUSED ..... IN REGARDS TO THE MAGNIFACATION FACTOR ..... I HAVE A 7D .... IF I USE ANY 50MM LENSES ....... DO I HAVE THE OPTION OF SHOOTING AT 50MM'S & 80MM'S OR BECAUSE I HAVE A 7D, MY 50MM'S LENSES BECOME 80MM, THEREFORE I CAN'T SHOOT AT 50MM ???? BTW I LEARNED HOW TO USE MY CAMERA THROUGH YOUR DVD'S SO BASICALLY YOU'RE MY TEACHER .... YOUR RESPONSE WILL BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED .... THANX IN ADVANCE.

  • @KIDFRESH1983 a 50mm lens acts as an 80mm lens on a 7D. That same lens on a 5Dii is a 50mm lens. Thanks!

  • @KIDFRESH1983 Multiply the focal length of whatever you're using by x1.6 and that becomes the effective focal length. 50mm becomes 80mm etc etc. Therefore something with 31mm roughly becomes a 50mm on your camera.

  • Great video man, thanks.

  • What about for video. Is the 1.4 that much better than the 1.8.

  • @StellaisBack Yes it is because firstly the 1.4 is metal mount (Metal mounts are usually much better). Secondly the f stop is lower so you're gonna get more bokeh

  • I have the 50 1.8 and while it produces great images for both video and stills I don't recommend it if you are mainly shooting video. The horrible focus ring and overall cheap build is going to give you headaches. I suggest paying the extra money for the 50mm 1.4 as it has a much better focus ring, and it also has more aperture blades that create smoother bokeh.

I really hope Canon makes a new 50mm 1.8 with a better focus ring in the future,

  • In real live even portrait photographers doent even use this 1.2 lens. They dont even shoot whit Canon or Nikon, They all are shooting whit a 60MP HASSELBLAD ate F 2.8 This 1.2 lens is only interresting when your shooting ate night whit no flashlight.this is cold availeble light photography .,Maybe astronomers?

  • This man gives very good down too earth realistic pratic commen sence advice. You cannot even use F 1.2 on broad daylight.,You have too seth the camera hole the way down too ISO 50 and even then the TV 8000 mode starts too blink.

  • Michael- Thanks for the video. Pl. cud u advice- I have a 50mm prime & a 18-250mm - Canon Rebel T1i. Which lens shud I use for videography- & any other tips, please that u can throw in. Many many thanks

  • The 1.8 is awesome, I own one.

  • thank you 4 the info.

  • Thanks for this review. I've got the 1.4 but have been salivating with the 1.2. With your review, it does make me have 2nd thought on whether the extra 1.2K will be worth it. I guess the short answer is not really. Besides, you're right, the extra 1.2K is enough to invest on something else. Cheers.

  • 1.2's so expensive, I guess the big question is is it worth the extra 1000 like you said.

Also, could you all please check the video on my channel, it's only a minute long and shows some captures of flowers using a macro lens. It would be greatly appreciated if you could at least view it, if you're feeling generous leave your feedback? Thanks a lot, and thanks Michael for this video!

  • Love this review , How abut sigma 50mm 1.4 is it better than canon ? is that good for canon 60D?

  • Wait, so do you not recommend the 1.8? Do you like the 1.8?

  • Thanks Michael, your awesome!!

  • oo Michael thank you is very helpfull you video

  • Great video.

  • The $400 1.4 should be safe if it's within the budget, I have tried the 1.8, it's ok but not as good in low lighting situations.

  • Michael, thanks! I love seeing these three 50s talked about and compared. I think all three have their strengths, even the 1.8. A 1.8 aperture is nothing to sneeze at, and for around $100... very cool.

I have, and love the 1.2 that I use on my 5d2. You can shoot a book of matches with this lens and it looks like something you can hang on the wall! Magic!

  • Thank you for this video. I guess for the time being I will stick with my 1.8. It's usually the lens I keep on my camera...

  • No complaints with the 1.8 ... Its my cheapest and favourite lens

  • Great job! Wery interesting opinion. I think the same!

  • Mmm Primes gotten a hand on some old film era prime. Not terrible bad :) Fun to play with and it forces you to reconsider ;)

  • Awesome video. I have the 1.8 and love her.(:

  • great work michael! Keep it up!

  • Haha check out the Voigtländerƒ0.95 lens. That thing has ridiculous amounts of bokeh.

  • I have a 1.4 for my Canon 7D. I highly recomend it for anyone buying a 50mm lens. But if you are a total a beginner go for the 1.8. It will do the same job as the 1.4.

  • I had the 1.4 version and had to return it. Don't get me wrong, it's sharp stopped down, BUT, I didn't buy a 1.4 lens to be used at f/2. That's like buying a Ferrari and not be able to use 1st gear. At 1.4, it's extremely soft, hence I got the 1.2L version, and to me IMO, it justifies the cost of being able to shoot sharp, wide open

  • I've heard the 50 1.8 has kind of a sketchy build quality. My friend actually had one and the mount broke off into his t1i, thankfully the camera was fine.

  • @fireymatt2 with proper handling the mount on a 1.8 would be just fine.. i have one too!

  • I am using 1.8 with 60d and am so happy with it, next investment might be on telephoto :) hopefully soon.

    thanks good tut mate

  • I love my 50mm f1.8 - it's an amazing little lens :) The image quality has blown me away, especially for its price.

  • I'm actually debating buying another 50mm as a backup. The f/1.8 provides an AMAZINGLY shallow DOF.. Sure 1.4 and 1.2 are even more shallow and allow more light, you shouldn't really NEED that unless you're doing portraits all the time either on a tripod or an extremely steady hand when focusing. However, using a friend's 1.8, it's extremely lightweight (he actually broke it weeks later). Such choices. AWESOME vid. Keep it up!

  • @DJTurtleDOTcom Thank you! Truth be told, I own all three of these lenses and use them for different purposes. They are all really fantastic. Thanks for your support!

  • One note I would like to add, the 50mm 1.2 is amazing on a full frame camera, it is absolutely the best of the three. However, there have been many, many times I found myself stopping down from 1.2 to 1.4, because of DOF issues when focusing on eyes. What I was trying to say on this video was try the 1.4 before you invest that kind of money on the 1.2, the 1.4 may be enough. Thanks for watching.
