There really was a cake because in the last cutscene, a robot arm appears and puts out the cake's candle, implying GLaDOS is still alive, which inspires the credits song. Cake practically MADE the plotline for Portal!

The cake is a fake promissed GlaDOS made the main character. She said if you get through all the dangerous and deathly tests alive there will be a big party for you and a veeeery tasty cake. But during the tests, the main character finds hints that make her believe there is no cake. It all turns out in the end that GlaDOS HAD a cake but was hiding it so you got your cake in the end. This turned out as a running gag on youtube
