Just read the book Horse Soldiers which deals with the first US SF troops on the ground in Afghanistan just after 9/11. Their initial assistance of the Northern Alliance forces was a major military success against the Taliban. Special forces are not just highly trained fighters but excellent at negotiations and winning hearts & minds.

If US and British troops cannot defeat a ragtag insurgency waged by a lot of armed Moslem hillbillies in Afghanistan, then I dread to think how they would fare in a real war against a real enemy. USSR never saw such resistance over those mountains but soviets came to knees only in afghanistan. It is not those mountains but it is courage to stand up against oppression. Now U.S. is facing the worst resistance from afghanistan and iraq(not mountains but desert) because he is fighting with real mujahideen..!

If US and British troops cannot defeat a ragtag insurgency waged by a lot of armed Moslem hillbillies in Afghanistan, then I dread to think how they would fare in a real war against a real enemy. The Chinese and North Koreans, whose armies are highly motivated, highly disciplined, and highly organised, must be gloating at Western military incompetence in Afghanistan and find it heartening that the combined forces of the Western world cannot beat a lot of lighly armed Moslem peasants.
