  • very informative video though, thx

  • lol, your hair!!

  • Very good explanation of a proper posture at the piano. I like your funny mime and your great way of teaching :)

  • "... and then they'd be like boo!" sooooo funny...

  • I didn't know you were funny too!

  • Excellent Andrew. Love your presentation style and subtle humor.

  • this lesson is one of the best of all andrew lesson

  • :D ahhh this is a real knee slapper!...No.

  • I love your vids man

  • my shoulder be so tense smh

  • thank you so much for teaching piano here on YouTube, Andrew. You're an awesome teacher!

  • I think your videos are excellent and very helpful, Posture is something my teacher never really said much about so I was interested to watch this video, but the only criticism I have is that I can't afford to spend 24 minutes being told about it, I'm sure you could have pick out the most important points and cram it into a 10 minute video at the most. Other people might like things to be taught thoroughly but for me I prefer things to be more straight to the point. Thank you for your videos

  • @teapotextravaganza I think if he'd cut out the singing and humor.... BUT..... then it wouldn't be Andrew and his teaching methodology!

  • he is funny.....

  • Great lesson, but shouldn't this be like lesson #1, not lesson #17?

  • @skip8619

I agree, this really should be put up towards #1...wouldn't be good if someone watched the first few on scales etc...and practiced them in poor posture (which i made the mistake for a long time of making a slight shrug in my shoulders...which KILLED me)...so I hope you move it up to #1 Andrew :)...good lesson though

  • what if I have only a keyboard on the table? (being a poor student) Can I develop awful habits I won't get rid of later?

  • que c'est long et bavard !!

  • @095kiki

    tu est bavard....

  • I'm waiting for him to randomly kick the piano and yell donkey SHIT!

  • I sincerely feel that we are extremely lucky to have you. You are a very good teacher! keep up the good work. Hope you'll benefit from making this free tutorials as much as we do watching them! A big thank you from France!

  • 8:04 begins discussion on relaxation. Great tutorial, Lypur!

  • 14:41 you made me think of the simpsons when homer is walking on the stilts to try and catch bumblebee man

  • Thank you for this video! I know posture is important but my teacher never taught me anything about it! You're a good teacher keep making videos please! :)

  • ***** I was getting relaxed just watching you relax. Thanks for being so student friendly.

  • oh, California!

  • that was a great teaching because i'm really bad at posture...

and i was wondering that you could make more of these videos because they are very useful...

  • that was a great teaching because i'm really bad at posture...

  • er.....i have an office chair..will that work? I didnt get a bench with my digital board ;(

  • Man, If i were You, my life would be complete with that Yamaha.

  • Crocodiles, Snap, Snap. We like your detailed explanations, although they could be a bit shorter. Thanks for these important basics.

  • your hair's wild, bro

  • "tv burps poetry corner", "hit all the keys without ease", "tv burp poetry corner"

  • it must be great to be rich...

  • realized my chair on my keyboard is too short, need to buy a properly sized piano chair :P

if any1 knows a good bargain place i can buy them, plz let me know in message :P

  • @uuganbayar88

Well, buy one that is resizeable.

  • @uuganbayar88

I mean one that you can change the height of.

  • Thank you so much, from Canada : D! I've been playing for a year and I never had a good idea of how to sit at the piano so i was always tense,..,. until now, yay.

  • Thank you. I am a pianist and have myofacial pain disorder from playing on a bench that's not adjustable for too many years. I've always played from too low a height. Teachers never used to bother teaching this and it's extremely important!

  • Nice one Andrew!

  • This video is gold man!!!

Thanks very much for taking the time to make it, it is great for us teaching ourselves!

    THANKS!!!

  • iv been watching your videos for about 2 hours now im convinced theyre the best on the web. thank you for giving up your time to teach us noobs to play!

  • Hello Andrew. I started playing the piano 2 weeks ago, following your videos (and they are wonderful, thank you so much). I've had a lot of trouble getting my wrists relaxed in the proper position, until I finally saw this video, and realized I was way too close to the keys, geez. Wish this video had been #1 instead of 17. This really did the trick for me.

  • Exactly the same here, I'm in more or less the same position and jumped forward to have a look at this, to discover that I'd been sitting far too close. I suppose it's because we're all used to sitting at a table, and try to sit at the piano in the same way.

  • hello andrew. Im from brazil, and started piano training in last week for my own. Your videos helped me a lot!! thanks a lot !! but, one question. i dont get the use of pedals. you already made a video about this? again, tks =]

  • he did make a video on this it was like around #7 or so... right was sustain keeps notes going left was to play quiet i think and center was to sustain bass notes

  • Thanks man!

  • Well, i'm not saying you have to trust me at all :) That's your choice. You can see some videos of me playing, but at the end of the day you should play the most comfortable and efficient way. I'm sure I don't know everything. We can always learn more. This is what i've come up with after 17 years of piano lessons though :)

  • @Lypur Ya I Agree with you:-) last year I wrote down my Ideas in how to learn Piano in 7 days I just received some comments like yours, they angry when they thinks that I was bragging that I'm a Piano master... so then I said them that I'm not... I just share my experiences in learning Piano and find my own way to learn piano in shortly time, directly to the Interval theory. I have not see your video till today, but my method almost the same... so I guaranteed that your method is applicable

  • methods aren't objective, they're methods

  • @holmbergz LOL! You are right! But I guess you can trust him. Of course, you would have to trust in me also for trusting this information.

  • wow I just realized how wrong i've been playing, thanks this'll help me a lot :)

  • Thank You very much for best lesson, Dear Sir.

  • I'm following all ur lessons... Proper posture at Piano was very helpfull for me... Thanks a Lot... =)

  • Thanks, really good lesson! Helped a lot.

  • :) thanks!

  • Hey Andrew, I have a question. First, I've been watching your lessons, and have been practicing my scales and arpeggios, but have you ever heard of "finger weights"? They are these weights that you can strap to your fingers. Do you think it would be beneficial to wear them while playing, or just wear them and do exercises with them... or do you think it would just detrimental, and lead to something like tendonitis? Thanks!!

  • i would avoid any contraptions. Schumann damaged his hand beyond repair by trying to strengthen his fingers with contraptions. Just play relaxed, do scale work, some hanon in moderation, and play through bach, chopin liszt and others! this should do the trick :) piano isn't all about technique, it's about the spirit your music sings.

  • really? ::sigh:: very well. lol. What if I used them, just not while playing the piano? Like doing finger exercises or something, to develop the strength in my very weak pinkie and ring fingers. I dont see that harm in that. si or no?

  • what you could do is severe the tendon between your middle finger and ring finger. This tendon is what restricts the ring finger, rendering it the least mobile and least independant of all the fingers. People have had this procedure done in the past

  • you are awesome dude...would you please show us how to play Canon in D, arranged by GeorgeWinston_VariationsOnTheKanon?

  • Comment removed

  • u look like a mad scientist!!haha

  • you know it ;)

  • No he does not! He's actually cool. :D

  • @RX1986

    Lool he DOES (:

  • i've been getting pains in my left shoulder blade whenever i try to learn a song that has chords in the left hand.. I can tell my left side is alot stiffer/tighter than my right side even when I'm not playing but i dont know what to do and this is really slowing down my progress..any suggestions.. right now i try to practice in 1hour sessions with atleast an 1hour between

  • I love your dog claw technique :D

  • This is a helpful lesson. And nice hair.

  • Aaaaaah...California!!^^

  • This is probably the most hilarious video of yours

  • oh really? lol how come?

  • it is funny though! with all the funny positions you do!

  • Your Schwarzenegger tug of war analogy, shaking your hands into "relaxed" positions, the rubber stilts, you hitting the keys and pretending to strain very hard - all very helpful demonstrations I might add... I especially enjoyed you dropping your arms into your lap from shoulder height for like a minute straight.

    Great stuff

  • is it wrong to curl/glide your fingers inwards towards your wrist when playing the rubato, would that create more tension in the tendons?

  • crocodiles! I thought they were alligators!!

    (From lesson #1) :D

  • *gasp*....I guess you caught me in my web of story telling lies!!!!!!!!! haha

  • what happened to your hair ? xD

    but still cool

  • lazy hair day XD

  • Was that the Polonaise Heroic by Chopin at the start of the vid? Nice! xD

  • yes it was

  • nooooo, you didn't say happy practicing!!

  • Ive got small girls fingers it make me :( that i wont be Rachmaninov ever.

  • true, but no one will ever be you, so make sure you do things the best you can your way

  • You make a really really good teacher. REALLY GOOD TEACHER. This is the kind of teacher EVERYONE NEEDS (NEEDS) [NEEDS].

Excelent reasoning behind everything, backed with humour and great examples, everything is easy to recall. We don't have to remember a list of things, instead, just remember all the funny stories and hey presto, win.

  • wow! thanks for the really nice comment!!! :D

  • you are so silly, i love you

  • my piano teacher was glenn goulds pupil!!!

  • Why could I only post that...? But thanks for the lesson though. Up till now, I've been using the same posture I use at the computer. Let's just say my shoulders got sore quickly.

  • ...piano lesson number 21?

  • This was a VERY helpful lesson. I can play one song so far (twinkle, twinkle litte star) and when I tried to play it again after watching this video I got a totally different sound to it!! Like soft and floaty:D I've been doing almost everything wrong, so I'm glad I got this corrected early. Thanks!

  • Nice video! Thanks for posting!

  • You're welcome!

  • Thanks....It was really very helpful to know about the right Posture.

  • yea posture is importaint. The biggest thing is you should be comfortable and not stressed.

  • thank you very much!!

  • glad to help!

  • wooOoow nice

  • ^_^

  • nice video, Do you recommend piano chairs for bad backs? one other question what is the distance from the top of your white keys to the ground, I would like to set my stage piano up more realistically.

    Thanks

  • hmmm, to be honest i've never messured. It's not the white keys to the ground that matters, it's actually that your elbow is close to the same level as the white keys. ^_^

  • my bench is fuzzy pillows piled up ontop of a beanbag lol

  • now that's working your core muscles! grr!! :D hahah

  • Thank you Teacher you are the best !!!

Explanations are very important adhamdoma1 , try to think about the ones who are begining learning!!!

  • How much did you piano cost?

  • It was $22,000 CAN

  • HOLY SHHHHHHOOP!

How many years did you practiced piano your gently playing it like amazingly softly like... your really a god

  • Thankyou very very much!!! I was sitting way to close to my Piano, and it was hurtting a little in my wrists. But now that i learned the right way sit at the piano, the pain is gone! and its easy to play softly now, and have feeling with the music!

  • awesome! glad i could help!

  • preachin to the choir

  • This lesson, when I first saw it back in the days, hehe, "april" was really helpefull to me!! :) I sat totally wrong before this ()old() lesson! :) And I see sooo many wrong positionings here on youtube!! So this is a really important lesson! =)

  • thanks! yes it actually is extremely importaint, because bad posture can lead to injury.

  • It's amazing how posture changes everything, a really useful lesson, as always. Thank you very much, who knows, maybe I'll be playing the piano properly some day! XDDDDDD

  • this is great, I never gave posture much thought but it really does make a difference, your a fun teacher!

  • haha :) well thanks! being fun is what i try to aim for, but sometimes i fail, it's nice to succeed!
