Yep The Belgariard is still in print! can buy the whole series on Amazon for £25 quid! Which i plan on buying when I get paid next! Because When I finished reading Eldest By Christopher Paolini he had an advertisment for The Belgariard and he says "A Classic coming-of-age epic... The Belgariard will always have a place on my bookshelves" So I am sold! Btw love your video!
Hey that's so cool you still hang on to your old Eddings books! Me to! Fell in love with those pages as a kid and couldn't bear to throw them away no matter how many times I moved apartment and cursed lugging my boxes of books up the stairs. R.I.P D.E.
Just stopping by to say that I am reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand per your suggestion, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm about a third into it and I just love the Major! So well-written and humorous as well. thanks for the rec!
Hi! I wanted to start reading again. But don't know where to start. Besides the library, where else can I get my hands on newer or just good books for REALLY cheap? I don't have much money to spend and I also don't like to collect books to stick on a bookshelf once I'm done. Any suggestions?
@NettieinCA How about a used book store? I go to one by my house all the time. You can bring in books to trade in and then use the money you make to buy more. That way, you're clearing out the clutter, saving money and getting new books at the same time! However, the library is really the best option-I go at least once a week, and you can always put titles on hold that you are really interested in. Libraries are amazing and often under-utilized.
I'm gonna recommend a teen book but I think it's great and actually love love it. If you have time, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanna Collins it's a series of 3 books. I love loved it and both my cousin and I enjoyed it we're in our late 20s and recommended it to our younger cousins who are teenagers and they loved it too.
I liked the 3 books of Stieg Larsson but Henning Mankell is much better in my opinion. I read every book he writes. Now I am reading "Les Yeux jaunes des crocodiles" (Yellow eyes of crocodiles?... I guess from Catherine Pancol, very good book. Also I am reading "Maudit Karma" (Damn Karma) from David Safier veery funny book.
Do you think the Outlander series would be too much for a foreign reader?
Marnie I love all the books you recommend (except holocaust books).....but will always be grateful to you for introducing me to the Outlander series, I am currently reading "the fiery cross" and I love it, I cant wait for them to make a movie (^_^) keep reading Marnie.
I loved "Sarah's Key". I'm reading "The Help" right now (I know you covered that in a previous video), and am really enjoying it. A book that I will recommend is "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom--very good, but follow it up with something light hearted (I read it right after "Sarah's Key"...let's just say it made for a rough week or so).
Have you read "The Postmistress"? Super compelling and gave me a lot more insight into WWII than I've ever gotten. And I agree, "Sarah's Key" was HEARTWRENCHING. But so good. I also loved "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" and completely agree with getting through about the first 100 pages before it grips you. Great reviews! =)
If you ever get a chance to see the movie (the swedish version with sub-titles) was amazing. The follow up book "The girl who played with fire" and the next one are really hard to put down. I usually try to pace myself so I can enjoy them longer, but I had no self control and read them all way too quickly.
As for book suggestions have you tried Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear? Have re-read that book so many times. A really good read.
@vicksonrnful I read Clan of the Cave Bear in 8th grade and I remember it vividly because my Language Arts teacher didn't believe me when I told her I did. My parents had to come up to school to confirm it. It was a great series!
I have read the whole series of the girl with the dragon tatoo. I really enjoyed the series. I have never read the Nancy drew books. but i think i will try them. I am 38 also. I rotate books with my mother. i have read a lot of young adult books. I could suggest soooo many...
I just started reading Unbroken by Laura Hilenbrand. She is the same author who wrote about Seabiscuit. It is another WW2 story but there is a little sports intertwined with it. So far I'm really liking it although I'm trying to work my way through it and keep up with all my studying for school at the same time
I am a bookaholic. Finished "The Paris Wife" by Paula McLain which is a fictionalized account of Hemingway's first wife. Very good. But last night I stayed up until 2 and finished "Room" by Emma Donaghue. A tad creepy, but really great book.
EEEEE!!! You introduced me to Kim Harrison, I'm loving her books! My Dad and I are devouring them! Have you ever read Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series? Somewhat similar in a way, also very "devourable" I can't make the May blog tv book club but hopefully there'll be another and I'll mae the one after. Keep the book reviews coming I am loving them. Thanks very much. Tara
@MrValleiko I recommended the Dresden series in one of these book review videos. Love them! I will definitely do another BlogTV book club-maybe not every month, but pretty often!
Hey Marnie.. I've always wanted to join a book club. I just signed up for Blog TV and subscribed to you so I'm going to try to read this. I say try because It's hard for me to read anything but non-fiction for some reason. I've been working on reading more fiction so this is perfect. Right now I LOVE Alexander McCall Smith. La's Orchestra Saves The World and right now I'm reading 44 Scotland Street which is part of a series.
Ooooh Blog TV with books - yeah! I loved Sarah's Key; I couldn't get it out of my mind. I am trying to make a list of books that I think you would love and I will email it to you soon. My "Holy Trinity" of loves is: books, cooking, makeup! Also, the first series I really loved was all of the Nancy Drew books. I still have them and I am 44!
I have had Sarah's Key for some time and can't bring myself to read it. My father has told me so many stories and reading them are all too real. I have The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series on my Kindle ready to read. Thanks for the updates! Cheryl
blog tv book club sounds like an amazing idea! Do you use your ipad much? I was looking at getting the new one that came out but with having a laptop not sure it would be beneficial at all?
@ssburmeister I use mine all the time. It's so much better for watching YT videos and reading books. It's also a lot easier to check email quickly on the iPad. I'm spoiled in having a laptop and an iPad! I wish I had the 2-it's lighter AND it has a camera!
I'm in for the book club :) Just ordered the book - can't wait. I was also wondering if you have read the Twighlight series? I've not, nor have I seen the movies. My sister is nagging me to read them - would love to know what you thougt of them. Thanks!
@beautybudget88 I would recommend "Enders Game" I'm not by any means an avid book reader, but this book was soo good! Its Sci-Fi, but nothing too out there. My whole class loved it! I definitely recommend!
Pretty much the only book I read in high school was a book " Enders Game" its a Sci-Fi book, but its not too out there or anything. Everyone in my class loved it, it was soo good!
Marnie, have you read the other two books in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series? They all have 100 pages or a little more that are difficult to get through. I LOVED the first and second ones and didn't much care for the third. However, the third is very nice for learning about the Swedish judicial system so you may like it for that.
story related-when i was little i could not hear well- deaf in one ear and 40% hearing in the other-when everyone was watching tv i would make up my own stories that went with what we were watching.i had surgery hearing was TO GOOD!- i missed making stories-so i would talk everyone into leaving home so i could watch TV with out sound- thats what helped me become a comic-book writer-My neighbor lived Nazi Germany boy does she have stories to tell-when she gets homesick she starves herself-xshelly
I do not think having to read 100 pages to start enjoying a book is fun! ha ha I must be one of the RARE people that did NOT get the hype on this book. (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.) I just didn't think it was a good book. By "good" do people mean horrifically graphic to the point that you cannot get it out of your head? NOT ME. Sorry fans
Hi Marnie! I just wanted to tell you that I read A Discovery Of Witches and OMG!!! I have read thousands of books (I'm a major bookworm and I love reading about vampires and witches the most) but this one has to be on my top 10 list, probably more like top 3! I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a really hard time putting it down! I can't wait to see what happens with Diana and Matthew in the upcoming books. The next will be out early 2012 (way too long) but it will be worth the wait I'm sure! :)
I had to go check the book out at Amazon and I love what one reviewer called it, "A geezer love story to endure-a classic" :) I think my husband could relate maybe, except he's not a widower...yet... but he does love his antique guns. :) He's getting one today! A retirement gift from his boss. I may have to think about this one. Not really my forte but I'll see. I think it would make a good movie. :)
hahahah Mallorean not Similarion (thinking of LoTR haha). anyway... I also wanted to leave a rec... my first historical fiction was by Margaret George - The Memoirs of Cleopatra. My coworker was reading it at the time (early 90's) and practically forced it on me. But I'm glad she did because it turned out to be a really good book. ;) I'm going to look for Major Pettigrew. :D
Omg!!! The Belgariad series!!! My first serious fantasy series too (also read it around 1985). Love that story. I think I may have to reread those. Hm. But I never got into the next set much - Similarian was it?? I should try again...
Btw, I thought you looked just fine without lipstick. Wouldn't have even known if you didn't say anything. ;)
Hey Marnie! I read Sarah's Key and although it was pretty tough to get through, I agree with you in that it was very well written. I know you said one time on Blog TV that you enjoy historical fiction..so I have a recommendation for you...It's a book about King Henry II and one of his mistresses..it's called For the King's Favor by Elizabeth Chadwick. I thoroughly enjoyed it....the first 20 pages or so were a bit slow in my opinion..but it picks up and is great to the end. xoxo Sara
I've nothing but really good things about Sarah's Key. I need to pick it up. Have you heard of The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer? It's also set in WWII Paris, and Hungary. I'm in the middle of it right now, but it's excellent. It's a fairly recent book, I think it was released last year.
Also, have you read Game of Thrones but George .R.R. Martin? It's political fantasy. Also HBO is making a series out of it. Anyway, great video. Love books!
Sounds like a very, very good book but it also does sound hard to read..probably will read it. I always thought that I did not like fiction Love your book reviews!
So cool that you're doing a book club via blog TV. I'll def. join you on this. LOVE hearing your book reviews. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for taking the time to share with us.
I always have to prepare myself, emotionally, to read anything involving the Holocaust. They're the most hear-wrenching reads, in my opinion. Night by Elie Wiesel haunted me long after I put the book down.
Starting a BlogTV book club is an excellent idea! I've been looking for a local book club to join, but haven't found one with members under the age of 65. LOL
Oh, and for a completely frivolous but rather entertaining read (again non-fiction...though it's written more like a fiction novel), go for Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster. Very light, but her humour is biting and sarcastic...something akin to if Karen Walker (Will & Grace) were to have written a book.
I'm totally on board for a BlogTV book club! I keep meaning to actually read Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, but now have motivation to start/finish it. If you're looking for something different to read (it's non-fiction), I'd try Look Me in the Eyes by John Elder Robinson (the older brother of Augusten Burroughs). He authored his own experiences growing up as a person with asperger's syndrome. His perspective is candid and interesting.
I read the 3 books of The Millenium Trilogy, and so sad there is no more of it. it was so GOOD :) ha ha I was born in 1982, so cute you kept your first books :)
@MsGoldgirl I think I mentioned it before, but "Bitter Scent: The Case of L'Oreal, Nazis, and the Arab Boycott" by Michael Bar-Zohar is a good book. Find the reviews on Amazon ...
France's role in the Holocaust has been underplayed a lot. France's collaboration with the Nazis during WW2 was largely economic because, for the time (and for the European continent), it was pretty developed industrially. Hitler didn't have much respect for the French military power and didn't really acknowledge that France had much to offer him until around 1940, well into the war. By then, most of the major players were established.
for me the most exciting thing about the "dragon tatoo" is the title! i just couldn't finish it. my brother's mother-in-law was appalled i couldn't get through it. oh well. she also reccomended sarah's key. much too heartbreaking for me but the rest of my family loved it. can there be too much reading? not in my world. good for you marnie. i'll definitely think about blog book club. take care. thanks for a great video. keep smiling.
I am reading Sarah's Key now and it is getting me SO worked up and passionate about what the Jew's went through at the hands of some very horrible people.
Hi, Marnie! As I told you before, my Italian grandfather (mom's dad) went through all that nazi terror. He was tortured but managed to escape. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here to join the blogtv club!! Great idea! And wow! how many books will you be reading at the same time? :o)
@LucianaVIP1 I remember you telling me about that. I am so glad he escaped! I usually only read one book at a time, but I needed something to get the horrible images out of my head while reading Sarah's Key.
I LOVE your book review videos even though I haven't read any of the books you've reviewed:-) I work in a library and it's soo interesting to hear what you have to say about the books I've never concidered, it's a great help when people ask for advice!!:-)
Personally I get so easily disturbed by the things I read (and the images it creates) that I tend to stick to comedy or romance novels. Right now I'm working my way through Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. Nothing disturbing there:-)
I am looking forward to a Blogtv book club.I just finished Water For Elephants. Also, I am so glad you spoke of A Discovery of Witches I loved it. I just bought a Kobo from Borders so I can keep up on all these great new books.I just can't stand to read books about genocide fictional or not my heart just can't handle it well. Thanks for the new recommendations. I just picked up Tiger, Tiger very sad but page turner about child abuse. I would say it is reminding me of The Glass Castle. Michelle
Hi Marnie...our Borders are closing out here (30% off), and I picked up the book you had recommended, A discovery of Witches. I'm just starting on it where Diana is in the library and soon to open the manuscript but she is hesitating...yep, it is pulling me in on only page #11...oooohhhh lol
Thanks so much for getting me back into a worthwhile event! ;)
the girl with the dragon tattoo is AMAZING. lisbeth salander is a badass. the move is also fantastic... but you need it with subtitles. the dubbed version is... just... no. haha happy reading!
Soooo...you're totally making me want to pick a book and read! My clients are actually headed to scottland and ireland this week because of the outlander series, so super! Its a sign, I need to pick the books up and READ! lol! I should read more books instead of magazines, shampoo bottles and cosmetics lol! Thanks marnie, im inspired now! :)
I just started reading The Clan of the Cave Bear. I majored in anthropology and always heard about he book, but never read it. I'm really loving it and plan on reading all the books in the series. Btw, have you read The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I know shes known for the Twilight series, but I firmly believe The Host is far superior. And have you read The Hunger Games series? If not, you should definitely look into them. Have a great day!
@SeeAndBeScene83 I read that in 8th grade in two days-I could NOT put it down!! The whole series is wonderful-I think I need to go back and reread it-it's been a long, long time! I saw The Host but skipped it-maybe I'll grab it now. My kids have the whole Hunger Game series, so I'm going to sneak in their room and steal it off their shelf! Thanks!
Yep The Belgariard is still in print! can buy the whole series on Amazon for £25 quid! Which i plan on buying when I get paid next!

Wouldn't have even known if you didn't say anything. ;)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good science fiction series? (Don't laugh! haha :P)
I've never read science fiction before, but I've had the urge to lately.
Thanks!

Love books!

Hi Marnie, thanks for the review, currently read 'Caught' by Harlan Coben, a real nailbiter, lost some sleep over this one. Klaire :)

Very light, but her humour is biting and sarcastic...something akin to if Karen Walker (Will & Grace) were to have written a book.
anonymouschic 10 months ago
I'm totally on board for a BlogTV book club! I keep meaning to actually read Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, but now have motivation to start/finish it. If you're looking for something different to read (it's non-fiction), I'd try Look Me in the Eyes by John Elder Robinson (the older brother of Augusten Burroughs). He authored his own experiences growing up as a person with asperger's syndrome. His perspective is candid and interesting.

On a beauty-related note: Coco Chanel had a Nazi lover during France's occupation ...

@ShayKinbake I knew there was a reason I didn't love Chanel! :)

I would be very interested in a book club!!

for me the most exciting thing about the "dragon tatoo" is the title! i just couldn't finish it. my brother's mother-in-law was appalled i couldn't get through it. oh well. she also reccomended sarah's key. much too heartbreaking for me but the rest of my family loved it. can there be too much reading? not in my world. good for you marnie. i'll definitely think about blog book club. take care. thanks for a great video. keep smiling.

I am reading Sarah's Key now and it is getting me SO worked up and passionate about what the Jew's went through at the hands of some very horrible people.

@Maurie58 Unfortunately it's a story that continues to repeat itself. Amazing how cruel people can be to each other.

Hi, Marnie! As I told you before, my Italian grandfather (mom's dad) went through all that nazi terror. He was tortured but managed to escape. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here to join the blogtv club!! Great idea! And wow! how many books will you be reading at the same time? :o)
LucianaVIP1 10 months ago

Thanks so much for getting me back into a worthwhile event! ;)

SeeAndBeScene83 10 months ago
@SeeAndBeScene83 I read that in 8th grade in two days-I could NOT put it down!! The whole series is wonderful-I think I need to go back and reread it-it's been a long, long time! I saw The Host but skipped it-maybe I'll grab it now. My kids have the whole Hunger Game series, so I'm going to sneak in their room and steal it off their shelf! Thanks!
