@blacks2011 my pool setup is very simple, its just a big aquarium, the biggest danger is cold weather and birds of prey. you can do this same setup for under $200
Aquaponics would most likely solve your filter problem. If you are in a zone where you can grow hyacinth, you could also sell that online and it would filter out the fish waste too. With a fish tank that size, you could probably grow pumpkins lol
Using copper is not good for the fish either - better to use stainless steel tubing (with one time purchase)............also, aquaponics is the best ticket. I admire your spirit and aplomb in wanting to grow your own fish and source of protein.
you could use a biofilter to help remove the nitrates, have a trough like you do with your filter but instead put a substrate in it like gravel and have plants that use a lot of nitrates. the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle uses such a thing to help filter their penguin habitat
You should look at cycling that water into plant beds(aquaponics). Two birds one stone. Fish poo feeds plants, plants help clean water, you eat both. Win win.
Awesome beginning for you! I'm looking into setting up.
Look into Solar water heaters. Some pipes and mirrors can heat all the water you need. No point in paying for fuel when the Sun will do the work. Even in freezing temps!
And like another person said. Check into Duckweed! Miracle plant. Nuisance to some, boon to others!
My concern is chemicals could leach out of the pool liner due to ageing and UV degradation from the sun, contaminate the fish and cause potential carcinogenic or mutations in humans causing cancers, tumours, or disorders. Is this a possibility since the pool liner is not a food-grade material?
@thesilverspoonful at the very least throw some duckweed into a couple of trays or a vat or something, fish like duck weed and it'll help deffer your feed costs. The trick is if you make the veggie section big enough and the right types of plants, you'll attract insects (like slugs) which, with the plant material you can blend, put through a pellet-izer on a hamburger grinder and make your own feed pellets. gourmet fish pellets for your fish and they're free. :) The bigger the system the better.
@thesilverspoonful Technically it's just the combination of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. a few plants in with the fishes would qualify. It might not work however. I'd recommend putting the water through a gravel bed (3/4" is fine) either a horizontal one or a vertical tower, the gravel has LOTS of surface area and you'll never have a problem with oxygen in your water and the rock surface is a great place for bacteria to hang out to help break the NH4 down into NO2 (or 3?).
look up aquaponics, you won't need the water change, you won't need to pay for fish pellets, it'll keep the water cleaner, there won't be much smell and you can get a veggie crop out of the system too.
If you go to home depot and in the rental department they have floor scrubbers that last longer than the a/c filters, about $ 6.00 each. ( the ones for the polishing machines ) However this system did not work for me, I must have watched the same you tube video. I have too many large fish and the build up is too intense. I tried the sand filter but that will plug up daily so today I put the clay balls in it, with the pads as the second bio filter and I'll post later this month if it is a sucess
@rickyeon i took out the ac filters and put some lava rocks in but in 1 day its loaded with green sludge so so i gave up on filtering and just change some water every week. the fish are growing and making babies, I have sold 30 1 inch tilapia so far.
@mike73miller ask me if your interested is making filter a system that can do the job... if you airate it and put those stones back you'll be doing better. use the pads to catch the solids and it will take time but those rocks will build up with benificial bacteria, i know it takes a while but it'll be worth it, never clean those rocks...
i have some other questions. What pump did you use. Have you ever thought about using a solar pump. I have been looking for one on ebay but not seeing something i think is powerful enough. I was thinking about the same filter idea but putting layers of charcoal and filter material. Have not figured what filter material i will use yet. And Have you thought about putting some form of plant in there. Will the tilapia eat it?
I need to know if the home made filter only has AC filters in it or it has other stuff in it. Are you or do you intend to consume the fish. I intend on converting some large water tanks (1/2) to grow tilapa.
@fivbag the ac filters have been breaking apart and getting sucked into the pump, i started using lava rocks along with the ac filters. the lava rocks are harder to clean though. the tilapia have been reproducing so i have quite a few small ones now.
Good Stuff bro! Keep up the good work! Look into tiger prawn. I hear you can grow them in same tank with tiapila. I hear they live good together. Keep sharing with us your progress. You have a fan in me!
in the spring i should be able to sell tilapia fry to hobbists, maybe even large scale eventually. i have easily have enough space to setup 3 or 4 more systems like this
@biospharms its never very windy here unless there is a hurricane, i havent really looked into solar because the pump doesnt use much electricity. some of the tilapia had babies but i think the cold weather killed them. so far the tilapia are very strong and require little care. had 1 die in the last 2 months. out of 80 i think that is pretty good.

Is it true that the bigger the tank, the bigger and faster the fish will grow?? or is it just a food thing?
