Man, I totally agree about leaving the space. I've noticed that in my old playing I played right on the melody/riff, thinking "yea, I play right just like the riff goes"
but actually it made the song all stiff. So many times a simpler straight beat serves the song better, when the rhythm opposes the melody part and is not right on it.
Then the two opposing rhythms together make the song groove... but like my idol Bill Bruford said, a drummer can also play simple AND complex at the same time...
