As beautiful as this sounds the version by OCMS and Emmy-Lou blows it away. You can hear and feel the hurt and pain in the lyrics. Reminds me of "come pick me up" by another fave of mine, Mr. Ryan Adams.
Rachel Loshacks arrangement and playing of the violin is wonderfull. I find it hard to believe that Norah has not made a recording to cd. of this, she should do.
@ianwalkerdownland I was just thinking the same thing..especially that nice crest just before last chorus.Rachel reminds me of Julia Roberts in this vid.
I am a huge fan of OCMS and Nora Jones. I am not sure if i have ever heard a more beautiful song..Rachel Loshak voilin is mesmerizing..and what the heck, Nora could be wearing burlap...and i'd be mesmerized.
@trishamcduffie43 I don't think Norah's version of this song has ever been released on CD, but she does have an new compilation CD coming out this month called "Featuring" which includes songs Norah has recorded with a variety of other musicians including Sean Bones, Gillian Welch, Herbie Hancock, Q-Tip...18 in all.
@trishamcduffie43 Download and install the free Real Player, you can download almost any video. Then save it by spliting off the audio and saving as an MP3. works like a charm!
@trishamcduffie43 There are a few websites that will take a youtube video and record it into an mp3 for you. The one I used to use shut down due to a lack of resources to keep their web hosting up, but try a google search! I have a couple live versions/unusual version like this from that on my computer. The original Old Crow Medicine Show version of this is pretty awesome, and on CD too...
@trishamcduffie43 its originally by Old Crow Medicine Show, ..or you could not be a tard and find one of the million different ways of gettin this off youtube
Her voice does sound nice but I can't understand what she is saying. They should remove the filters or teach her to annunciate. Old Crow does MUCHMUCH better. Nice try Nora.
Check out a posting of this song by "Birdman and Redwing" - a couple of guys doing a great version. This is one of my favorite songs to play - very powerful
Thanks for posing this. I admired it on the fundraiser and had been looking for it a while back on YouTube but never found it till now. The arrangement and vocals are beautiful but Norah might enunciate better. I can't make out the lyrics well. Does anyone know when to find them? Also, has Norah ever recorded this or performed it again? It's a real gem.
Well my friend, I see your face so clearly Little bit tired, little worn through the years You sound nervous, you seem alone I hardly recognize your voice on the telephone In between I remember Just before we wound up broken-down We drive out to the edge of the highway Follow that lonesome dead-end road sign south (Chorus:) We're all in this thing together Walkin' the line between faith and fear This life don't last forever When you cry I taste the salt in your tears
@pricklypear47 Thanks for posting the Lyrics here. I would not change anything about Norahs rendition she is singing not speaking. But it is hard to make out the lyric. Now I know them, have to say what what powerfull lyrics they are.Like alot of poetry it speaks direct to the soul which understands even if you dont. Its rare to get both beautiful lyrics and song together.well done OCMS.
Thank you so much! That's really nice of you to write all these lyrics down for me. I see so many nasty, vulgar posts on YouTube it is real pleasure to be contacted by someone as thoughtful as you. Best of the holiday season to you!
@impostermedia yeah, I know OCMS has a studio recording, but I think the original question was as to whether Norah had done a studio recording of the song.
That was Norah, fool. You should aspire to be half as shit as her. And you must be buzzing yourself if you can't recognize the excellent musicianship.
OH MY GOSH!! I thought all she played was Piano! This Lady is VERY talented and I love the passion she shows for Her music. I have also loved listening to her and Ray Charles! Keep going strong Lady, and please stay away from situations that would hurt how the world views you. You just jumped up thousands of notches on my respect for you and your talent! God bless you and protect you.
Norah knows a well written song when she hears it. a mega-talented woman with a beautiful soulful voice. would like to hear her sing this song with the o.c.m.s. ; bet it would awesome! P.S. she could wear a burlap dress and still look amazing.
blastduder , I like your idea better. I think o.c.m.s. fans would like it .Norah's beautiful voice with their great vocals & maybe some added keys by Norah. I would bet it would sell like hotcakes, to both Norah's and o.c.m.s.'s audiences. Just a thought.
I'd go for it. I'm a fan of OCMS and Norah Jones. The discs would sell like hotcakes as you mentioned....although, overall, artistically, the two would have to a time trying to find material to do together. "Wagon Wheel" and "Come Away With Me" are from completely different worlds lol
While I agree that this will always be an OCMS song, I do find this version very addicting. Anyone know if there's anywhere to purchase (or steal, if there's no other way) this version of the song?
Ketch Sekor and Willie Watson wrote this song. Willie sings lead, with Ketch on harmony, and doing one of the most beautiful harmonica interludes I have ever heard. Norah does a very nice job, but it will always be a OCMS song to me.
You know, I thought it was Ketch for the longest time, but since that comment now I realize it is Willie singing. Ketch Secor does do lead vocals on many of the songs though - and when I saw them live he did about a third of the songs.
Norah is awesome but I don't think her voice is "tortured" enough for the song. Whoever sings it on OCMS (Keith probably, definitely not Willie) sounds like he's been through it all. Norah just kinda makes the song a little to happy. Just my opinion though.
I love the OCMS version and I agree that Norah doesn't have a tortured voice. But the lack of torture doesn't bother me because I think her tone is relateable, reflective of the average life experience. Not everyone is tortured, doesn't mean we don't suffer hard times. And I think her interpretation is meant to sound hopeful - this performance was given in the spirit of recovery - making her tone all the more appropriate.
Norah has such a beautiful voice, and it doesn't need to be anything besides what it is. Still, I don't quite feel this song, because the original has so much more punch in the guts.
I could be mistaken about Rachel. Just second hand info I'm passing along. Although as I understand it, in addition to playing bass, she's an accomplished violinist. There's also a picture on her website of her playing the violin as a child. If someone knows definitively, please post. Would be nice to give proper credit.
norah jones is my most favourite female singer. i love your music, your voice and the way you sing. a pure artist.

Come my friend, let's put this thing together
And walk the path our worn out feet have trod
If you want, we could go on forever
Give up your jaded ways, spell your name to God
(Chorus)
All we are is a picture in a mirror
Fancy shoes to grace our feet
All there is is a slow road to freedom
Heaven above and the devil beneath
(Chorus)

And, it is Willie who sings it - it says so inside the album, plus, he does the vocals whenever I've seen them live (3 times now).
