Mercury was once a very well respected name in the Luxury car segment until they released the Tracer. I bet the Tracer has something to do with the discontinuation of the Mercury brand... but that's just my thinking.
The Mercury sable its so sofisticated for that years, it was full of electronic details that all the cars of this era have but.. the mercury sable and taurus.. have it 20 years before, lol... good job for american cars,, all the time innovating with new tecnology !! =)
@D4rkRAGE Exactly and alot of people dont realize that because they probably arent old enough to remember the competition to Sable and Taurus at the time. Most cars were square boxes and Taurus and Sable were a competely new "jellybean" design. A design which even now doesn't look 25 years old
What is the point of having MERCURY all over this page if you inbred creatures can't manage to spell anyway..........? Or to use proper punctuation. Did you steal your computer?
I work at a car dealership in British Columbia, and today I scooped up a pristine 1990 Mercury Sable ... digital dash, sunroof, white - and NO RUST! buddy, you would love this car!
When this car came out in Sept 85, the styling was positively outrageous! You have to remember the era your are dealing with. Cars were basically still the same style as they were in the 1970s ... with am radios and two knobs on the radio.
Congratulations on your new car. I agree 100% with you. I think the styling is strikingly beautiful even today. And the lightbar still makes it unmistakable, though the Mercury Villager and Pontiac Grand Prix had it too. Good luck with your car.
Wow those cars look so ugly now. Kind of interesting to watch these old car commercials because you get to see what people thought looked good at the time.
Well, the rear of the bus looks like a Thomas bus chassis (recognized from having taken Ford B700s with Thomas bodies all through grade school), and Thomas chassis 9 times out of 10 are on the Ford B-series platform, so in all likelihood that is a Ford bus (combined with it being a Ford commercial, it 99% likely it is).
Wow your bus knowledge is impressive. However, there are probably just as many Thomas buses on International chassis out there. New Thomas buses are exclusively on Freightliner chasses as both companies are now owned by Daimler.
I was happy to see one of those in this ad...they're so rare now I don't think I can recall ever seeing one in person. I have an '89 Escort GT, still running strong
My uncle has a 1980's Cougar in the Ivory Coast (wEST AFRICA), AND MY MOM HAS A 1997 Mercury Cougar also in Ivory Coast. It good car even in the hot african climate

What is the point of the Murcury brand, they're just mildly tweaked fords.
AshtrayI 2 years ago
Its sort of a poor man's luxury line of cars. More fancy than the regular fords but less expensive than their Lincoln brand of cars.
So yeah they are the same cars.....but are fancier. xd

we had the 87 Topaz and 88 Sable. The Topaz was alright, but the sable was a piece of crap. Don't know how these cars were so popular.

I wish it were still the 80's, great decade, great cars from Ford. New 08 Sable is a looker though.

Why doesn't this commercial feature the Grand Marquis? Is it because it didn't have the logo from the Mercury Sable?
Jac2Mac 4 years ago
those old body styles rust like hell
rekhjerh 4 years ago
They do when they are bathed in salt. If you go to the warm climates you can find them rust free.
tolaviator 4 years ago
Great song that went well with the commercial.
ProThruth506 4 years ago
Where is the Grand Marquis??
DBCaravan 4 years ago
It wasn't exactly shaped to use the wind to help it hold the road, it was a huge box.
tolaviator 4 years ago
If you pause it at 17 seconds you can see the Grand Marquis Station Wagon in the background to the left.

Yes, digital instruments were optional on Taurus and Sable until the 1996 models came out.
