I think I used the finite difference method (centered) to discretize the 2D wave equation.
The grid edges were set to zero, and the grid at time=0 was a plot of a peak-shaped exponential. The wave equation took care of the rest.
The peak function sort of approximates a splash, and to get it I just tested dozens of similar exponential functions.
