  • This song is sung like he's crying...

  • Does anybody know who that is a portrait of from 5:05 - 5:30 ? My guess would be Strassman but it doesn't really look like him 100% of the way.

  • What is the title of the picture at 8:25?

  • These words move me! <3 <3 <3 !!

  • First time i heard this song was when i actually started to hear music and that wasnt until i was 19. Before it was noise without a key. After hearing some Nine Inch Nails my mate put this album on and i was on another plane. I was no where near my body, nor was i chained to my mind, i was just gone and all there was, was this song and nothing. A Perfect place to go and relax. If it wasn't for Tool and Nine Inch Nails i would be bashing my head off a table until my brain slid across my life!

  • I can scroll through these comments forever and stay interested, tool fans have so much in common with me

  • Damn touch screen!! I almost disliked my favorite tool song...

  • i hope people realize what it really took for maynard to write these lyrics. obviously its not about writing the next new hit song with a catchy hook. its more than sitting in a room with a pen in the dark. this was all about experience. i mean to put a song together with this melody and lyrics takes more than most song writers. fuckin amazing song

  • by the way...what does he mean reflection?

  • @TheOsirix12 its only yours to know right now, if someone sounds like you just be careful who's reflection your really seeing, could not be any easier, reflection is what you see as clone image on two sides and between is the secret mirror

  • @chriswilliamstool i may be dumb but what do you mean secret mirror?

  • @TheOsirix12 lol its a myth, vampires dont see thier own reflection, maybe thats why many cats dont like seeing thier reflection, then its on to the myth of the ghosts and spirits, which was "already" you might recall "debunked" by the ghostbusters, ZOMBIES read only memory lol, vampires have random acsess memory :O lol ROM vs RAM its a endless 3d puzzle with logical senses as the tool :)

  • @TheOsirix12 i like your name too, it reminds me of the matrix :)

  • @chriswilliamstool xD thx^^

  • see this (related to this song)

  • this sounds great.

  • For whatever reason this reminds me of an Egiptian ceramony...Weird...

  • @blackopsrule ur not worth it

  • @coaxiatubeyou And?

  • @blackopsrule dont listen to music al your life

  • @coaxiatubeyou And?

  • @blackopsrule goodluck with that , scre w you :P

  • So sorry 4 it ending early everyone, youtube didnt allow me to upload a video longer than 10 minutes, am working on a better version at the moment.

  • @aussiemart It ended at the perfect moment like it was meant to be. "Before i pine away" to me means before I die. Get it, buried in a pine casket you would decompose with the pine, "pine away". Interpretation to me anyways.

  • @TheFreekittycat Pine : To wither or waste away from longing or grief... the actual definition fits, as well. I like your interpretation, though

  • thats a sarangi, i wanted to learn how to play one if my grandma brings one back from india, right now im learning how to play sitar

  • and then this version ends before the climax!? WTF!? Great sound up until 9:57 where it shuts the door behind you for the long walk of shame home.

  • Absolutely one of my all time favorite songs. So fucking beautiful.

  • @fukitol1000mg yeah I'm doing wonderful now, been through opiate addiction before with surgerys but nothing compares to trying to get off those years of benzos, but tool was one of my tools to help me make it to the other side, times when i wanted to end my life

  • Is Tool starting a cult? I always thought their music was hypnotizing and lyrics were thought provoking but they didn't release albums fast enough to satisfy my American attention span.

  • Join us, my friends. In a place where conscious thought transcend modern medicine and all science.

  • woah..this sounds way better than the one i have!

  • 7:34 Universal-consciousness titties........I wonder how we all would treat them differently if we knew they were looking at us. I for one, don't think I could suck on them; maybe just kiss them gently; I certainly wouldn't be blowing on an eye-nipple.

  • i pray that Maynard can see my comment amidst these pointless arguments. just wanted to thank him for some of the most thought provoking lyrics i have EVER read. this song is helping me fight depression and my ego.

"And as I pull my head out, I am without one doubt, don't want to be down here soothing my narcissism. I must crucify the ego before it's far too late, I pray the light lifts me out."

  • probably one of the best songs on their best album...tool 2012 comming soon!!!!

  • great video but it sucks that it got cut off

  • the all in the all we are the essence and all of us connected form the universal mind we are one people need to embrace this because it is divinity

  • @patryciakatski You don't think it's random???

  • @ScottMarlin1 no not at all, i dont think anything is chance. But that is my perception and mine alone.

  • @snapper842002 your the tool if really believe that man they have more collective talent than 90% of the bands out there in any genre

  • @snapper842002 You are a fucking whore for the worlds pawns.

  • all i could say is that with this life will bring furthermore and our eyes open to see our own reality and people with eye closed are just way of saying is bullshit.

  • Before I pine away...

  • This beautiful music has helped my life in ways that are almost unfathomable. I wish everyone a life of content and happiness!

  • @MrSteve1199 my life is always happy because of this song that help me a lot of my life

  • Love the Alex Grey's Gaia painting in the video! I want that tattooed across my back :)

  • Beautiful landscapes

  • This song helped me get off xanax, fuking doctors made me take it and I thought something was wrong with me but all they care about is money and dumbing me down, this song help me crush the ego and get outta the pitiful whole I was in

  • @musicmademejester Beautiful. Keep sharing, TOOL is a powerfull recovery tool for me as well.

  • @musicmademejester Me too my friend. me too.... Now I know I touched the ground and there is nothing that I fear anymore... All I see, all I hear, all I do IS LOVE.

  • @musicmademejester evil doctors! all they want is money! and the way tehy make you go and visit them too! evil!

  • @musicmademejester Hey that's awesome to hear... yeah my aunt is currently getting herself off of that & is doing much better now... she said she wouldn't ever of taken it if she knew how addicting it was, which of course the doctors neglect to tell you! This is an amazing song, pretty damn powerful too I see in how it helped you.

  • tool + a blunt of weed and ambien = amazi-HOLY FUCKING SHIT IM A TELEPHONE

  • @theshortguy411 nah, you're just a faggot.

  • It's calling me 2

  • Never has been nor will there ever be a band like Tool! I'm just glad I was in the era to witness the masterpieces they've created and hopefully are STILL creating. It'll be a sad day when Tool hangs it up.

  • Light years ahead of pop, hip-hop.

  • Fucking incredible And spirituAlly lifting

  • lsd + tool = bliss

  • His drumming on this album ,simply his Legacy....

  • Guitarists. This is a G major scale in the phrygian mode meaning the root chord is B minor. The mode does not change. So your starting at B minor, yet playing the G major scale. Yes, the B minor pentatonic blues scale fits this as well.

  • we are all one mind

  • This is the deepest song ever created. And, I have listened to A LOT of music.

  • I always thought it was "and its killing me" but now I know it's "calling me".

  • he says Though not down.

  • This track is one of Tool's best. Truly original music.

    Great work with this vid.

  • This track is one of Tool's best. Truly original music.

  • One little advice to fellow seekers. Before you crucify your ego, make sure you build a solid and strong ego first. Otherwise you might end up like some of my former friends, aging burnt out welfare bums who mumble day and night how they are Bodhisattvas and what not. Very sad scenario. Build knowledge, depth, opinion, health, job/career, material and emotional stability, personal achievements, etc, THEN crucify the ego, not the other way around as many have done, to their misfortune.

  • @emptyhighways I agree. Balance is the word that comes to mind.

  • @emptyhighways I'll do that.

  • @emptyhighways I love this comment and shared it on my FB. I just thought it was cool. It ended up helping a friend Thanks!:)

  • I hate that th ending is cut off! But good job!

  • I dont think the hair will ever go down on the back of my neck.. !

  • last verses was the shit

  • @jjtheslayer69 too right bud

  • esta es la cancion mas magica que escuche nunca antes

  • whats the name of that painting at 8:55? its pretty entrancing to look at

  • wth?! it ends before the end (and my favorite part). :(

  • always gives me goosebumps when i hear this song

  • This song brings me to tears whenever I hear it, with Alex Grey's artwork it's just completely indescribable in every way. Thank you maynard for sharing this with the world

  • great video

  • I love this band, and just listen to that bass....perfect!

  • I assume the picture at 8:26 is also Alex Grey but I couldn't find it. What is the name, where can I find a good quality print? It is so awesome.

  • I love the art, but I'm not at all crazy about the way you have the lyrics roll across the bottom. It's too fast, distracting, and makes me feel nauseous. Sorry. I think it would be better to have the lyrics stationary, line by line, if you know what I mean.

  • this was bad ass in concert!

  • what u show in your videos we cant understand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but u guys r the best in music... i used to be linkin park fan.........but u r much far ahead from themmmmmmmmm..........u rock...

  • thanks for making such an awsome video with the lyrics for this song!!!

  • Tool is not a band, they don't sing music.

    They're lyrical genius's and instrumental genius's.

They're a group that tells the truth and everything of life into a "song"

They're gods of themselves, and many.

They are just amazing. They either.. HELP you become a better person just by listening to them, or you can atleast relate to the "song".

    Somehow someway tool touches you.

Become more then you can, don't be a follower. Be like tool, just not a "tool". (if you get what I mean)

  • really tnx for this vid.

  • ahhh!!! whata buzz kill when it just cuts off like that.

  • saw the 01' show with tricky, that version is pretty cool actually

  • Alex*

  • alec grey is a fucking amazing artist

  • I love this audio, but WHY WHY WHY DOES IT CUT OUT TOWARDS THE END? :(

  • @HellaBeed Because YouTube doesn't allow too long videos...

  • If you have read any Greek mythology Reflection is a lyrical reteling of the story of narcissus. In the myth narcissus is the most beutiful male in the entire world and no matter who tried to love him, no one was good enough, (in his eyes). For his pride (or ego) the gods made him fall in love with his own reflection. There he sat for his entire life staring back at his own face. He eventualy pined away to nothing, leaving behind the flower named after him. The greek myth says word fo word "he

  • @shanecombs1993

It's not a retelling of the Narcissus story, it merely makes Reference to the Narcissus story

the song is about someone who is lost Not in his own beauty but in Self Pity and Loneliness. Furthermore he DOESN'T pine away, he turns to see that he is not alone but is One with the rest of the universe.

it really has more in common with buddhist or hindu themes than greek, but it does reference narcissus in the lyrics

  • @shanecombs1993 ineresting how they tied that in with the spiritual backbone of the song and album. thanks for the insightful post

  • @TiTSxxMcGEE

Lol your the typical tool idiot, "it takes a certain mind to connected to them bla bla bla" lol..

  • @cowboy5632 Was trying to find a nice way to say, “an intelectual mind”. Someone that “gets it” sees art made with forthought and layered menaing. Question, what don’t you like about Tool? Or is it that you are just fed up with the cultish following?

  • @cowboy5632 I've read a few posts that you've posted here, and I must say that I am impressed with how well you've handled having your lack of intelligence exposed. Indian chants are stupid shit? Why because everyone told you that? I'd bet my left nut you have no idea about that, nor why they consider cows holy. Maybe when stupidity isn't mainstream, you'll wake the fuck up.

  • @SignsReverywhere It's just an urban myth that cows are considered holy in india.

  • @SignsReverywhere holy schmoly.. yeah you heard me.. regardless. your stupidity outdoes his. YOU should know better. cuz you arent stupid honey

  • @bluessingerr I have no idea what you're getting at. Nor do I have any idea how you're so sure I'm not stupid.

  • @SignsReverywhere only 33 thumbs up should be more

  • @SignsReverywhere ohhh such a great comment :D

  • @SignsReverywhere amazing reply sir, if you came up with that off the top ur head i would be quite flabbergasted.

  • @SignsReverywhere There is no way to stop mainstream madness without killing the source. The Media. Good effen luck. The Builderburger's have their grimy hands on everything and no one is seeing this craziness. I hope someone destroys these federal reserve credit systems!!!! b4 everyone is dumbed down.

  • @ScottMarlin1 agree 100% we need to fight against the elite but most people in this world are too worried about who wins American idol or which celebrity is doing drugs, people need to wake up or the NWO will destroy us all

P.s. audit the federal reserve !

  • Respond to this video... This is a feel song. Done by feelings alone. If you don't close ur eyes to this at some point: ur not human

  • @cowboy5632 I'm not gonna say it takes a certain mind to enjoy good music, but it also doesn't take certain mind to know that you are the idiot, just looking up a video to just come and troll it. So I'd say 'Lol your the typical idiot idiot'

  • Right now, this is my favorite song in the whole world.

Nothing can compare to this song right now, it just totally sucks that so many others just skip the song once they hear the intro and does not match their taste.

Just listen a bit to tool, especially reflection cause even I gotta admit, it was the toughest song for me to like, but once I started listen to it regularly it has become the best song I've almost ever heard.

    A pure masterpiece

  • 10 people dont know jack shit about music

  • i'm not even high!!! but that tripped me right out.

  • It... it actually does sound better. :')

  • tool+LSD=superior travel

  • This will be the song in my head when then the poles shift......

  • i plan on listening to this song at least 30 times tonight.

Tool is Not ahead of their time, time does not have a base value. but if time brings your comfort and sanity I believe the phrase is "every other band is behind Tool a 1000 years". But again since time has no base measurement its somewhat safe to declare that there are Many times and they exist side by side. Like in an electron-The particle is in more than 1 place a the same time. Take Time out of the Equation&There is no paradox.

  • @TheDogVI your right tool 2 me just the energy that moves us all except in audio form of course maynard puts a liitle of himself in the songs but overall tool spreads the message if ur eye isnt open you will just hear another band.

  • tool is way ahead of there time

  • "Before I pine away?" WTF?!

BEFORE I FIND A WAY......(to finish myself off, as in 'the end' so curiously close to and possibly comfort -giving...foreshadowed in the first part of the song)

Don't post videos with the lyrics before you understand them.

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball Are you saying "Before I pine away" are not the correct lyrics?

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball "Before I pine away" is correct... pine away (verb) - lose vigor, health or flesh as through grief

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball actually it is "before i pine away" in this instance Maynard is saying "before i suffer in grief"

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball You make no sense buddy :( you shouldn't post lyrics when you don't know them.

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball Sorry dude. It's before I pine away.

  • @sixthSigmaSnowball No. He does say pine away.

  • for some reason, i dont think they can pull off playin this song live

  • @masterchasekid they do, they actually play it with 2 other songs

  • @masterchasekid they can and have!

  • @masterchasekid They can. Its out there on youtube and its tight.

  • TOOL is gods gift to mankind

  • I LIEK THAT YOU PUT ALEX GREYS ART UP!!

  • CRUCIFY THE EGO! thumbs me up

  • MELANCHOLY

  • can you please send me a link for the picture from 8:28...btw..great vid..incredible song.

  • Maynard makes me realise things that i wouldnt have thought of even if i had lived 10 times... The lyrics! TOOL FTW!

  • a masterpiece.

  • ...before we pine away...

  • Tool are not from our time. I see Tool as an Ancient-Greek - Maya's - Ancient-Chinese mix of philosophy and lifestyle, this mix of these so sophisticated, complicated and in general hard-to-understand way of think. This unbelievable miracle, known as Tool, has these things and comes from 4000 after Christ. We are actually lucky to meet our prophet that can lead us to the spiritual redemption. Study this kind of things and you WILL understand. Going to continue my orgasm. Greetings

  • This song is the pinnacle of Lateralus. Not only does this song demonstrate how humans are so narrow minded and shallow as a whole, but it also proves that we can stop the negative trials and move forward. Very inspiring, spiritual, uplifting and tear jerking!

  • haha fuck drugs when you have this song... each and every time i listen i am enlightened, high, not high, just after someone important has died, when i've had good news, this song is perfection. forever changed. certainly crucifed my ego..

  • It was maynard who said " get really high once, and then spend the rest of your life trying to get that same high without using. This way you do not become dependent upon such devises or tools. because then your really not living for you any more. Joda people relate what they know. your right you don't need drugs, just the age old question " what the fuck is going on" this is the catalyst of all expression. peace

  • Never realized at how much Carl Jung was an influence on Maynard's lyrics.

  • two thumbs up for tool

two thumbs up for alex grey

  • this song is amazingly haunting.eerily melodic.with depths unreached by mankind.but gentle as a kiss from a cool night summer breeze...what im really trying to say...is.....FUUUUCKK YEEEEAHHHH!!!!!!!

  • TOOL SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK'N'ROLL HALL OF FAME

  • @DUSKFIREWII64 i live in cleveland..i will go down to the rock hall and check to see if they made it in.if not we should go in there and start a two person riot.screaming ...tooooollll bitches!!!!!wheres the fucking tool exhibit?nah just kidding.but i agree with you.

  • Too all of you dumbass stoners who think you got it...

    YOU FAIL

  • @Numeronx

lol Even though im a stoner, I got all of this long before I smoked. You can diminish the distraction.

  • @Numeronx not all stoners are incapable of comprehending this message you fucking jerk-off
