I love instrumentation. It's absolute genius. The vocals are hotter than a Manassas Street corner, but between that Jack being called weak, and that "Ace of Clubs to keep my babe in place" bullshit absolutely fucks it up for me.
A Jack IS weak, it's the lowest rank out of the face cards. The only other card it can trump in many card games is a 10! (laugh).
I do agree with you on the "Ace Of Clubs" line but I guess the writer of the song (Deadric Malone) couldn't resist since the whole song references a deck of cards.
@soln4suhreborn I take exception to that Jack line because I am known in certain circles as The Jack of Spades. I know, this line wasn't aimed at me, I'm only 40, so I may not have even been born at the time s the release of this song, but trust me: I definitely wouldn't keep my babe in line with any of that Ace of Clubs bullshit. And I'm personally not weak, so those two facts trump the entire song.
This song really isn't that politically correct. First he says the woman who played a game on him is dead and he uses the Ace of Clubs to keep his baby in place. That means going up side her head if she acts up. But it's a great great song nonetheless.
@Rayvyn007 That;s true about the "ace of clubs" reference, but "she's not here anymore"....c'mon,now! That can simply mean he replaced her with someone new-LOL!
Will someone please tell me how many studio versions of this song there are?
I like this because it includes the lines "there are some men, etc". The version on
The Soul of OV Wright cd does not. This version doesn't include my favorite line "you can go get your coat and I'll get your hat, I'll be the ace of spades baby whenever you come back". The version I remember from back in the day had BOTH lines I mentioned. Help!
@geneking7320 There are actually two versions of this tune. The one you're referring to is on the "Soul Of OV Wright" album and issued as the original Backbeat 45 single. This version is the first one I heard as a kid and I liked it better. It was issued on the "Vaults Of Duke/Peacock Records" album and issued as an ABC Records "Oldies 45" single. This version I posted is an alternate mix because he even phrased the lyrics differently.
@geneking7320 I remember the version that you're speaking of. That's the version that I used to hear as well. My auntee used to looveeee this song to death.
yeah those weaker man too call themselv a jack rofl... so funny man i love it...but seriously thanks so much soin.. always when you thought you already all good music and there is nothing good left... such a great song,, just a shame the other songs from him are not like this
When this song came out it was so different from any thing else that it became an instant hit. The boasting words come from the blues and the piercing trumpets come from the big band. The whole is so much greater than the parts.
Haha! I have this vinyl album...i am so lucky!!!! My dad collected albums when i was a kid and gave them all to me when i became an adult!!!! He's the best!
Memphis Tennessee 10 toes down every day all day. O.V. Wright,Willie Mitchell and the HI Records band cookin' up that southern fried funk for ya-1970 Cadillac Coup De Ville style!!
O V Wright and Willie Mitchell partnership at backbeat records, was incredible in the early seventies, better than their collaboration in HI records;do you remember the MEMPHIS UNLIMITED album, that's the best of OV Wright.thank you for this song.
I agree. By the time O.V. signed with Hi,the label was a shell of it's former self and their version of the "Memphis Sound" seemed to lose it's luster a bit. Plus,O.V.'s health was slowly deteriorating at the time and you can hear that in his vocals as well. The "Memphis Unlimited" album was marvelous, the "Ace Of Spades/Nickel And A Nail" album was great as well. My favorite track from the "Memphis" LP is "Are You Going Where I'm Coming From".

The correct title is not "Ace Of Spades," it's "Ace Of Spade." It says so, right on the label.

@PatrioticPirate Well now,let's be truthful:

Here's the original vinyl single:

That's Melvin Carter (who wrote the song) on the second vocal. It doesn't get any better than this!

O.V. was a bad man, in my opinion as great as O.V. is I would put James Carr right up there with him, O.V. said himself that James is his man
bmwstan 3 years ago 2
O.V. and James Carr were labelmates at one time back on a small Memphis label named Goldwax so that's another connection between the two.
