WHEN I DIE AND GO TO HEAVEN I WILL KNEEL BEFORE NELSON AND JEANETTE AMD SAY THANK YOU FOR ALL THE YEARS OF JOY I RECEIVED FROM THEIR MUSIC AND MOVIES. WHO THE HELL CARES IF NELSON WAS GAY OR JEANETTE WAS A DRAG QUEEN? THEY WERE STUNNING TOGETHER AND NOTHING CAN CHANGE THAT.......LOVE YOU ALWAYS......DENNIS
Go to t he Jeanette MacDonald International Fan Club for the truth about the many hapopy years of her marriage to Gene Raymond. But Nelson and Jeanette did work beautifully together.
Coward, for all his talent, and humble beginnings, was a snob, and a misogynist.
Jeanette MacDonald was brilliant, always. Poor old Nelson was a bit stiff but they are part of american-and World- movie history- how much poorer we would be without them, and the lovely music of that era.
These 2 singing stars were always on my most favorite list for most of my life! Their voices complimented each other so well! I will love their music for the rest of my also! As to what Noel Coward said? He has a right to his opinion, but they must have been talented to have kept their fans for so many years; even after both their deaths! Liz
It was Noel Coward`s loss that he did not see the appeal of Jeanette`s sweet, child-woman vivacious coquette. I love both her and Nelson and think they complimented each other beautifully. Lorraine
as a purely historical footnote Noel Coward absolutely loathed this film and them in it. "I had forgotten" he said " Miss Macdonalds habit of fluttering and simpering all over the place. It was like watching a demented rocking horse making love to a gladstone bag."
I am a personal fan of Miss Macdonald so dont shoot me for publishing this!
I admire both Jeanette, and Noel Coward, but I have to admit, when you consider the material this movie was based on, it's somewhat forgiveable, his rather blunt criticism of her acting. They were a great pair, but definitely not suited for Noel Coward's genius.
@talmadge1926 Noel Coward had an sexual orientation the prevented him from seeing and appreciating a female with Ms MacDonalds ultra beautiful feminity. She was an absolute angel.
@talmadge1926 : that man was gay. perhaps that explains it best as far as his critique's wordings on her is concerned. as accomplished as he was, so were eddy and mcdonald and perhaps more so, in their field but his sexual orientation probably clouded his vision. it was not the time yet for 'la cage aux folles..
This lovely song is from Noel Coward's Bitter Sweet, which had a TON of wonderful songs. Hope someone posts more moving pictures or just songs from Bitter Sweet! Cheers!
For more about the stars of MGM, there's this fantastic book entitled "The Golden Girls of MGM" by Joan Ellen Wayne (I think that's the author's name?). It goes into detail about the love affair of Eddy & MacDonald, as well as other major MGM starlets. :)
Unfortunately, this movie was not very true to the original play. Noel Coward saw the film and cried because he thought it was so horrendous. After that, he was very resistant about letting Hollywood adapt any more of his works for the film.
Nelson Eddy was gay however Jeanette married a man so like Nelson Eddy in looks it was eerie. I loved these two voices together and they sang togther for so long. I miss them..
@goblinonacloud He was NOT gay, her husband actually was. She and Nelson were lovers for over 30 years. They had quite the interesting and intense love story.
Lovely to see Jeanette and Nelson. How they blended and worked together so well, however, don't believe that they were lovers in real life. It wasn't so, but they loved each other as good friends and working partners. Wayne
"Though my world my go awry/In my heart will ever lie/Just the echo of a sigh/Goodbye"
Such internal rhymes! Such a wonderful lyric! Does anyone today even know what the word "awry" means, or how to embed "lie" in such a complex metaphor? Doubtful.
Beautiful singing, by two wonderful people with fantastic voices.Coward was a fool.

Hello friend,
memory of...
Jeanette Anna MacDonald (June 18, 1903 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania † January 14, 1965 in Houston, Texas) was an American actress and singer.
They sang and played excellent roles in operettas and musicals.
I wish you a fun weekend - francis

He was not gay, he was married for about 27 years, and there is evidence that there was some off and on affection between Eddy and MacDonald.

Cole Porter never wrote a melody as ravishing as this though, good as he was.

Don't get carried away -- Coward couldn't compare with Porter -- Porter was in a different and much higher class

I suggest waynegabi reads "Sweethearts" by Sharon Rich as Barbrasgirl8 did. Then you might not be so naive.

Noel Coward is simply over-looked. He was a genius, greater than Cole Porter in that he wrote his own plays and screen plays.

Always under-rated, Jeanette and Nelson: Such glorious kitsch; and Coward at his melodramatic best!
