  • Thank you so much for showing off Netflix on the Apple TV. I've been hoping someone would upload more than a few seconds of Netflix footage because I wanted to see how it compares to Netflix on the Xbox 360. I have a ATV on order myself which will replace my 360 as an HD media streamer for Netflix. I have no desire to pay the Xbox Live tax just to be able to watch HD Netflix. The ATV implementation looks better and at least there will no longer be a required monthly charge.

  • Now I hate to ask the obvious because I'm sure it's there. I've yet to see any video or acknowledgement of any Netflix videos showing the HD tag in the description. I assume it's there, otherwise how would you know which movies are in HD? So is my assumption correct that you do see the HD tag for HD titles, or is this a crap shoot? I know this is a stupid question, but I've seen some pretty basic things left out on i devices before.

  • @phoenix6652 If your not seeing HD then that movie might not be in HD. You need to find a movie you know is in HD then check on the Apple TV if it says it. You need to click on the movie. And go into the info page. That's how PS3 does their HD for Netflix.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom Thanks although I had found out from another Apple TV owner (2nd gen) that yes it does show an HD tag in the descriptions for Netflix movies. I know this may seem obvious, but Apple is good at leaving out features you would think should have been there from the get go. Do I need to go any further than to mention how long it took before the iPhone (iOS) got copy & paste? I rest my case.

  • @phoenix6652 You might want to look at the Roku box its 1080p and has Netflix support.

I like buying movies and TV shows from Amazon all content you just stream

Even if you back up on your iTunes its a lot of work setting it back up.

VUDU is the same as Amazon just stream it all you want.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom I did consider the Roku briefly, but I also live in an iTunes world. The only other reason I would have went with the Roku would have been for the TWiT and Revision 3 channels. However I can just pick and choose which podcasts I want from either one anyway under podcasts. I have a lot of iTunes content and actually backing it up isn't really that hard. In fact I don't even have to think about it because I have my documents folder set on an automatic backup. Pretty painless.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom I'm not concerned about the Apple TV being 720P anyway as my TV can only display up to 720P. Down converting compressed 1080i or P I here looks awful. So I'm not bothered by the fact the ATV can only output 720P.

  • @phoenix6652 I see your point but if you buy TV shows and movies from iTunes those will be 720p even when you buy a new tv later on. With Roku and Amazon on Demand you can still watch 720p but later down the road when you get a 1080p set your all set.

Amazon does not charge for downloading what you buy always free. Apple iTunes just one download so you better back up everything you buy.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom The ATV is still right for me because it will be able to handle the content I purchased through iTunes both protected and unprotected. The bottom line for me is I need a box that can handle the content I've purchased already, and handle Netflix. As for Amazon, I'm covered in the form of Windows Mediacenter and my Xbox 360. I can rent Amazon video on demand on the pc and watch it on the pc or 360. So I still get the best of both worlds by having a 360 and ATV.

  • @phoenix6652 I did not know Amazon supported the Xbox 360. Thank you very cool. I do use a program called PlayOn it streams Amazon HULU netflix and other Comedy Central to xbox Ps3 Wii, but you need to pay for it. However its very good.

Tversity has HULU support for xbox 360 and PS3 and that program is free.

ps3 media server is a great program also supports xbox 360 also. Does not support content that is DRM.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom Amazon doesn't support the 360 directly, they support Windows Mediacenter through their Video On Demand program for the PC. The only catch is I have to rent directly on the PC but then after that I can watch it on either the PC or through the 360 since it is a Mediacenter extender. For me the ATV isn't about getting my movies on my tv from my pc as it is about Netflix and streaming my iTunes music to it. DRM sucks, but I still have a lot of DRM'd songs and video.
