@brainboob at least hers are good! She added her own brilliance to them to make them different. This guy didn't do hardly anything different and sounds like he's trying really, really hard to sing this.
So it's a bit high and maybe not the best voice he could have but ever since first time I heard it, it got to my soul. Not that the original is bad, not at all, I love Tori Amos version as well. The two cannot be compared.
As a big Dream Theater fan (Tori Amos too), I need to admit that James would have HIGHLY benefited from singing this song one octave lower. Twas meant for a woman's voice.
Yes if it was 1995, it was when Derek Sherinian was with the group.
I would take it down a bit, but to all the metal heads calling it weak, this is a very very emotional and quiet song. Not supposed to be heavy. I saw Tori do this song live and she started crying. So yeah.
Not bad, James, but I would have taken it down a bit.
I don't know why people always associate technical skill with lack of emotion; imagine how silly you would feel for saying Chopin or Mozart wrote emotionless music. You don't have to like Dream Theater, but you don't need to insult them personally either.
Now, what I was originally going to say:
All-in-all, not terrible, but not great, especially after listening to the original; those high notes killed him. I woulda shifted the whole song down a fourth or so...
I agree with you. People always affiliate Technical Skill and No emotion, when that's completely ridiculous. I'd rather write something unique, with some technicality than creating something that's been done before with "emotion". You can have both, people. Try Space Dye Vest, Finally Free, Surrounded... People dont even listen to their songs and make these assumptions.
The only problem I see here is, this record has been made exactly one month after James Labrie's accident when on vacation in Cuba in hotel, poisoned food damaged his vocal cords, which is the main reason many people don't like him cause he was unable to hit very high, clean notes making people think "omg this singer sucks". It's not his fault that happend. Now, James has fully recovered from it and things are getting better through time.
This is a bootleg recording of this cover. Quality is from a bootleg. Tori fans should be happy because people like me discover this great singer. Dream Theater are the best band ever, even they are too tecnical, they are emotive as well. Only someone that don´t know their music can say the opposite.
Sorry, but this is a song about a daughter's relationship with her father. Guys don't have the same kind of relationship.

Tori has covered many songs by men, what's the problem?

petrucci before he hit the juice

perhaps without the country twang and dips in the vocals... :) I like the falsetto parts

Fuck yeah! Someone doing a Tori Amos cover justice..of course it'd be Dream Theater!
ilovedankassbud 1 year ago
Not the best, but this song was definitely not written to be sung by a guy. James pretty good considering that.
biglouie369 1 year ago
I absolutely adore the instrumentals used here, but the vocals could use a little work. It's not the worst, but it could be better.
XbrokenXforXlifeX 1 year ago
This song is not meant to be sung by a man, let alone someone who isn't Tori Amos. This is one of her personal songs.

@donniedarkodevotte
tori has sung many covers by male artists who were not 'meant' to be played by a woman. think about it.

Very daring. And whether "objectively" great or not, I admire DT for covering such a beatiful piece.
Now, how do I reveal the above comments that've been marked down?
Fuckin' Google and their endorsement of China's censorship. Isn't that the whole POINT of free speech we CLAIM to champion in the West?
I wanna read the comments people have marked down even if I too disagree.
Still, back on-topic, nice piece. Flawed perhaps, but a couragous rendition of a less-than-obvious classic.

Its interesting. As a fan of Alternative Rock and Prog Rock, its interesting. Not really amazing, but he gave it a go. Respect to him for that.

LaBrie can't sing, regardless which octave.
Simply terrible

@splent Yeah, it's definitely Derek. This was the same show all the live songs on ACOS was recorded.

No that is weak. Down a good 5th, Mr Labrie.
Piano is a pale shadow of Tori's. I assume this was before wizard Rudess rocked up. He'd have done it properly.

DT are crap. They bring nothing new to the table, other than the fact they can play really fast and really well.

I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be.
It's just that James Labrie isn't that good singer and it feels like it works better with female vocals.
