I'm American, I am young, and I fall into whatever other demographic you please. That doesn't mean that I can't like both Bellini and Rammstein if I want to. That means that I value diversity, which is how the United States should present itself. Instead, our people are nationalist and politically apathetic simultaneously. Oh, and classical music is half-deceased in every country, it's just much better funded and more often studied in Europe.
Anyway, this video is not there to argue whose continent has better musical culture. Music is different on the different continents, and that's not so bad. We get richer listening to it. Just enjoy the smile on these people's faces and ours when they/we listen to this 'flash opera".
I've spent time in Europe, and I can say without hesitation that there are probably almost as many people in Europe who can't stand classical music as there are in the US. Especially among younger people. It is NOT a US-only phenomena.
@detroyes2 Is that really noteworthy? Young people tend not to like classical music. That should be a given. I'm 22, I am part of the minority who thinks classical music is nice to hear, still, I hear maybe one record, song, whatever ever couple of months... that's normal. No matter where you are (from). Also, if I may: The singular of phenomena is phenomenon. ;)
@SteinbrecherBack I don't think so. I was just commenting on the tenure of the conversation previously, which seemed to suggest that Americans were singular in a disike of classical music. It has been my experience that this is hardly the case.
Incidentaly, on the other end of the spectrum, I've found that the Japanese and Chinese have a greater respect for classical music than even many Europeans.
Mr Pozner....Americans also don;t understand pissing in the street and writing graffiti all over monuments and beautiful spaces. So, I guess that makes me glad to be in Amercan. I've lived in Europe , Africa and America and they all have pluses, but I have to say, America is a great place and we Americans understand a lot more than most people think.
@sidpook Don't you NORMAL Americans realise that it's not because of YOU that many people think all Americans are idiots? It's because of this radical right-wing sorta-minority that is allowed to rule your country and dominate your country's image outside the US. I mean, for Obama it has to be normal by now to be called a nazi and an Islamist. In Germany, everyone making such statements, on TV or wherever, would be put in jail for hate speech, defamation and incitement of the people.
While the awesomeness of it all warms my hearts, the sight of people looking annoyed or even stopping their ears while the goddamn Traviata is being performed right in front of them makes me want to fund nuclear weapons research.
@Nilla6 Steady! Americans have little taste for classical music, much less opera, never have been exposed to it. It's simply a matter of ignorance. If there were more arts programs in public schools, children would be familiar with classical music, but there's a whole class of people who are hostile to arts programs. Funding instruments of war are considered more important.
@carrotjuse It's funny you'd say that because while there are a few people who seem annoyed or bored, a majority looks genuinely excited and happy. And I thought to myself "well see, we (french in my case, but europeans in general) mock Americans for their (supposed) lack of culture and whatnot, but you don't see flash operas in France!" I deplore that classical music is too often restricted to stuffy, pompous rooms and people, and I can only admire taking opera to the streets.
@Nilla6 Flash opera is a way to present opera to a public who may be unfamiliar with it, and to encourage the public to buy tickets and attend. You dont see it in Europe because it's not considered necessary. Europeans support opera through state subsidies as well as ticket sales. Most people there are familiar with arias from popular operas and attend opera regularly. Most people here wouldnt know the Brindisi from the Habanero and consider opera as elitist and old-fashioned.
What a wonderful experience for those shoppers at the Reading Terminal Market (and for us on line, too). But my question is, why would you bring your camera to a retail shopping mart?
This video cannot help but bring a smile to your face....I only wish I could have been there at the time. But, seriously, how many people bring cameras when they are shopping?
Hi guys, I am a music student and I plan to do this in the city where I study in the UK. It seems flash performances are becoming quite popular in the US but are yet to kick of in the UK. Any tips for how to start this up? Is it better to keep it totally spontaneous or to advertise it first? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
my bro & my dad r in the beginning of this vid my dads wearin a blue phillies shirt that says all this stuff 1885 or somthin like that & my bro is next to him in a tan shirt wit like a skull or sum kind of design!!!!!
The guy at Carmen's at 3:02 is a pretty awesome guy. I was just at Reading Terminal Market on 5/12/11 on a business trip, trying to get my first legit Philly cheese steak and I was about a dollar short. The guy reached into is own pocket and produced enough to complete the sale, despite my protests that I'd just order something less expensive.
If I ever go back, I'm going to stop by and pay him back. :)
You just have to love the blad guy at 3:00 with his sunglasses on his head....he looks at these two guys sing.......and thought "What in the Hell are you doing"...he might have though worse but I won't say it......but at least he smiles. LOL
Wonderful! This music fits the scene of shopping at Macy's!
Not only are you bringing great music to those shoppers, but you're also showing them that opera singers look just like regular people when they aren't on stage in costume with all that makeup.
Check out the guy's face at 2:05 seconds. It looks like he is watching a naked woman or something. Now THAT is loving opera. Hum, hum, hum.....dee dee dee.
I wish this was the Opera Company of Wherever I Live. To be going about my daily business and have things like this and the Hallelujah chorus going on around me would make me so happy. Even the worst day would be invariably brightened up by such fantastic performances.
@amimizunofan22 Speaking of the Hallelujah Chorus, here's a recent one. Search in YouTube under 'AlphabetPhotography Hallelujah Chorus' and you'll get it. This one was in Canada just last month. @pedro21011 Haha, I just finally got around to watching that. Not quite as intense as this company's rendition, but I feel it was more gutsy, especially by those first couple of people. Thanks for sharing! :) Oh, and yes, that's a heck of a lot of views per day. O_O
Idée géniale d'aller un magasin pour sortir la musique de ses cadres traditionnels.A voir la vidéo le public n'est pas insensible! Une belle surprise!!!!
Bravo! Art comes to the people. 200 years ago this might have happened in the public square. Very nicely done Opera Company of Philadelphia. Thank you Reading Terminal Market for being part of this. What an upbeat and joyful moment you all helped create! Oh to have been there. Loved the looks of confusion, joy, anxiety and almost rapture on the faces of the public.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
That was outstandingly beautiful <3 Way to go for all those brave souls to just start singing! BEAUTIFUL!

One of the great ideas in staging this is how the singers pretend to be feeling a bit awkward like everyone else and do not stand out at all.
When the person next to you start sings opera and then the next and the next - it kinda gives you the feeling that you can sing too. Quite uplifting.

From God’s Word the Bible: John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
God bless !
