  • I took your instruction and made one for a large Old Hickory knife, that of course came with no sheath. My wife assisted me and we actually ended up using two separate layers of the "leather". One as a form, and the 2nd to cover it.

My intent is to paint it,

While it's not that expensive to buy a simple sheath, this was fun to do; interesting and something to tell the tale about. I searched the Net and didn't see anything else like it. Thanks for the ingenuity and the 411!

  • Thanks for the great idea for knife sheaths.

  • great idea.

  • @angrybuck1 Thanks ! There are a lot of possibilities with this untreated rawhide.

  • There is a large array of rawhide on the market. You just have to keep looking. It should not take more than an hour or so before it is pliable enough. Regular grocery stores have them in the pet section. Good luck !

  • @TheGunner257 It is actually a no name brand. There are alot of variations of rawhide. The difference between this and treated leather is it will retain any shape after drying. I am in norway btw so just go to your local pet store.

  • Cool Idea ! I never thought of useing a dog raw-hide bone ! Here's a couple facts about dog "bones", Dogs can't digest these rawhide bones & the leather stays in they're intestines for around 10 years ! yuck ! Raw hide is VERY slippery when wet !! & last, all leather shrinks while drying ! Raw hide strings are geat to carry in the woods for all kinds of things ! Thanks for shareing, Take Care !!
