It was 1981 and, still at school i asked my parents to buy tickets to be there on the opening night. Poor Robert Tear the tenor fell ill and another fine singer David Hillman ( he died recently) had to sing from the pit while Tear 'acted.' Dame Janet was superb from beginning to end. What an inspired choice of role for her. She was a great champion of Gluck's music and recorded a whole album of his arias.
The book is Euripides "Alcestis". I always have to find the stories the operas are based on for some reason. I love the Dido, from the "Aeneid', Now I'm reading the Christopher Marlow version. The Wagner operas took me a few years ! Dame Janet just fits so perfect in the roles she selected.
My booklet says December12,1981. I'll have to check and see if there are 2 different recordings. It is a Ponto also. I Went by a thrift shop today and bought 6 complete operas , compact discs, for $2.00 each. I've never had that happen before.
Oops, sorry - it WAS *1981*, not 1982! As far as I know, there's only one recording that was made of the live 'Alceste' production at the ROH, and this is it - during the last year that Dame Janet decided to say goodbye to the operatic stage.
The official Royal Opera House CD set does have the libretto. The other unofficial copies probably won't have the libretto.
Wow, an entire opera for just $2? Wow! Truly a bargain!
I got this opera last month, but it doesn't have the libretto, where did you get the libretto?I downloaded the Italian version, but the only said the French version is changed and some of the people are not in the French version, I need French to English. I found the French version, but it is the complete opera with piano score and no translation. I keep looking though. Thanks, Suz. Love this, Have you read the book it's based on? I love it.
Hello! I got the Royal Opera House CD box set (recorded LIVE December 1982) a couple of weeks ago, and it comes with the libretto in French with a side-by-side English translation.
The box is maroon/dark red, and the CD art cover/booklet have a b&w photo of Dame Janet below a matte dark red band. Is that the version you got? It should have the libretto/notes booklet inside the plastic CD case.
No, haven't read the book - but now you've made me curious! Thanx for the view and comment!
