I never owned a Vincent. But I had a Norton for a couple of years in the 70s. That Norton did have a soul, but it was a miserable, loathsome, black-hearted, hateful, death-minded soul. Listening to this song helps to wash away the memories of that evil machine. So thank you Mr. Thompson.
I also think this is the best version. The pacing just adds drama. I heard a recording from the Winnipeg Folk Festival that is definitely in the same vein.
just saw RT play last week,,, and he did this...how incredible it is live. I rode a Black Lightning when I was a younger man ( long before this song was written) and it did have a soul....... now if only I had dated a redhead named Molly...
Thanks to you for posting this best version i've seen so far. Heard this the first time by a nervous man not at all sure he could play it. He played just enough that i searched for it until finding the original. I don't much like the most popular version by Del whomever (i'm sure they're great in their own right but this is out of their sphere) and i've heard so many versions. No one does it like Richard Thompson, and that is exactly how it should be.
A man can ride his Vincent Motorcycle in the daytime and sleep under a city bridge at night covered only by cardboard and his life will be rich and complete.
Britain produced some of the most soulful motorcycles ever made.I've never ridden a Vincent....and I never will, but I feel like I have when I hear this song.
The Googley censors apparently didn't like my remark disparaging Pop Culture in its lack of a place for this brilliant performance,as evidenced by the low view count and even lower "Like" count.

What's negative to say about this? A fine example of the folk/blues/bluegrass tradition - with a touch of Erin.

He makes a guitar talk and words sing. A poet in every sense. Thanks for the upload. Take it easy.
