Then the usual arguement about lack of babies will be thrown in, but the root cause of the lack of babies (the astronomical cost of living here + stiffled pay and lack of job security and any kind of social security net) is ignored. Everytime people on the ground speak about PMET jobs, general office jobs, receptionist work, etc being freely given when there are many locals trying to get these jobs but are priced out by cheaper foreigners who can afford to take that lower pay due to currency exchange + the lower cost of living they have at home, it seems to be a guaranty that someone from the PAP or some PAP mimic will reply with arguements about low level jobs and highly skilled jobs that no one is even complaining about.
Singapore is no where near fully grown. We've got lots to face. We've worked towards a robust economy and good infrastructure, but we have a long journey ahead. And since a low population means lousy economy, we have no choice but FT. All i'm saying is, make babies, or put up with the influx, cos there's no way we can prevent this. They will naturalise soon.

This is not true either in the United states or Canada. Yes, there are some kinds of work permits and imigration permits that work that way. Once a person has a "GREEN CARD" they are just like everyone else. You get work where you can. Who GETS the right to work there and move there, yes. Once there we are all the same. I moved to Canada six years ago from the United states.
You know only too well that an employment-based GREEN CARD is given out only when a suitable citizen worker cannot be found. This is not the case in sg - law does not require employer to show that. Hence our "green card" are given out indiscriminately to foreigners who are cheaper and replacing locals.

Unemployment benefits only apply when you are laid off proper and only last 26 weeks. Mostly you get nothing and even when you get them its 66% of your normal. Try living on 66% of what was already too little.

While I am now a US Citizen, I take great pride in my heritage and my country of birth. Singapore is a great country and like all great countries, will encounter growing pains. Everytime people on the ground speak about PMET jobs, general office jobs, receptionist work, etc being freely given when there are many locals trying to get these jobs but are priced out by cheaper foreigners who can afford to take that lower pay due to currency exchange + the lower cost of living they have at home, it seems to be a guaranty that someone from the PAP or some PAP mimic will reply with arguements about low level jobs and highly skilled jobs that no one is even complaining about.

Singapore is no where near fully grown. We've got lots to face. We've worked towards a robust economy and good infrastructure, but we have a long journey ahead. And since a low population means lousy economy, we have no choice but FT. All i'm saying is, make babies, or put up with the influx, cos there's no way we can prevent this. They will naturalise soon.

In some ways the sense of competitiveness and of achievement was struck out of us when we were all streamed into particular social prototypes. The grammar doesn't really matter. before you start commenting that the situation is same all over the world, you may wish to know:
Singapore has no minimum-wage policy. Is that the case "all over the world", in usa, in canada, in europe, in australia?
Do you know what is the result of a combination of no minimum-wage policy and an influx of foreigners.
And I have not even talk about how loyal foreigners are import to *replace* dissenting locals to remain in power in elections etc.

No not at all, I have no problem believing that people in singapore who make Min wage are in a miserable situation. I just ment that just because a country has an official min wage dosen't mean that they are better off. The united states has one and its too low to matter and Canada has one and its high enough to have results, the results being the exportation of low paying jobs to the developing world.

Singapore does not have such a law. Foreigners are replacing singaporeans in jobs at all levels from "crappy" to "good" ones. Hence lots of unhappiness from singaporeans.

This is not true either in the United states or Canada. Yes, there are some kinds of work permits and imigration permits that work that way. Once a person has a "GREEN CARD" they are just like everyone else. You get work where you can. Who GETS the right to work there and move there, yes. Once there we are all the same. I moved to Canada six years ago from the United states.

You know only too well that an employment-based GREEN CARD is given out only when a suitable citizen worker cannot be found. This is not the case in sg - law does not require employer to show that. Hence our "green card" are given out indiscriminately to foreigners who are cheaper and replacing locals.

How does this differ greatly from the United states who have laws that are strict but THEN lets people come without papers? When 50% of the Mexicans in the united states just snuck in when nobody was looking how is that diffrent? The diff are:
1. your "mexicans" example is an exception rather than the norm - most people in most part of usa in most professions are not victim of your eg. Whereas in sg, it is now affecting the whole country and all levels of workers from professionals to labourers.
2. There is welfare for american citizens who are displaced by those mexicans - food-stamps, unemployment benefits.
I should let u know that I am familiar with US's situation. Much more than u are with SG's :)

ya ok, so its even worse in Singapore. Why not? Its a very small place. It could be overwelmed by imigration easly. Welfare and foodstamps? Better spit before you say that when you are in the united states. Both are seen as a huge waste of money to anyone not on them. Unemployment benefits only apply when you are laid off proper and only last 26 weeks. Mostly you get nothing and even when you get them its 66% of your normal. Try living on 66% of what was already too little.

1. foreiger applying work visa (non-immigrant) - law does not require employer to prove that a competent local cannnot be found.
2. foreigner applying for "green card" based on employment - same as above.
3. No min wage.
If u are an intelligent person, and I think u are, you will see that the combination of the above 3 means:
1. singaporeans are in deep shit.
2. We are not being sour grape.

We have those laws and what happends in singapore with the laws blessing happends here against the law. It is a tide that can't be stopped really. And how do we know? Because many Singaporeans have studied or worked in Canada/USA. We are familiar with how their employment-based green card system works, their welfare system and first hand encounters with americans. Canada's problem is NOWHERE near ours 'cos -to repeat-
1. employment-based PR = must ensure a suitable canadian cannot be found 1st = educated canadians not displaced.
2. point-based PR = lowly educated canadians do not have to face competition.
3. welfare system to fall back on.

No. And I have already made it clear, and so have this very video - it's the indiscriminate import of foreign workers at all levels of job from labourers to professionals. This causes singaporeans to be out of job. And for those with jobs, they have to take much lower wage. Isn't this what this video is about? The lack of welfare and min wage makes the problem much worse.

That's incorrect. I have already said many times - the problem in singapore is so hugh precisely because it covers all level of jobs. low-end are replaced by temp foreign worker. high-end are also replaced - by permanent workers who get PR ridiculously easily. You really need to read up more on sg's situation if u are interested.

I guess I am not trying to say its "the same" exactly. Singapore is a very special place and you need not convince me that it does not need more people. I hate big cities and I would leap off a tall building if I lived in a place so full of people. I just ment that the responce of not wanting more people no matter where you live is a universial one. Reasons very but the debate boils down to the people in the over loaded bus resent the driver stopping to pick up more people.

What min. wage? Nobody makes min wage. Well not NOBODY but its so low that market forces demand wages that are higher then min in 90% of the united states and most of Canada. My kid makes more then min wage working at burger king part time. A min wage that is so low not even an Mexican would work for it is a joke anyway.

Singapore has no min wage - meaning citizens are competing with imported foreign workers from 3rd world country willing to work at wages BELOW min amt needed to raise a family in sg. That's the reason why the govt refuse to have min wage - to ensure max company profit.
I of course do not need to lecture you on the neccessity of having min wage, do I? :)

In the united states on the other hand, many of the people are takeing farm jobs, farm jobs don't have a min wage or one thats much much lower. So low even the "non documented" workers make more

so u see? in usa, it's (a)just farm job, and (b)they make more than min wage. In sg, it's (a) all level of jobs and (b)they (foreign workers from 3rd country) making way LESS than amt needed to survive in sg! (it's ok for them 'cos they cramp 15 pple per apt - no law. And sent most money home).
Also, to get employement-based PR in sg, law does NOT require employer to show an equivalent local cant be found!
This, combined with no min wage -- I think u should get the idea now :)

No, Singapore's issue is totally different: it is importing foreigners to become citizens to dilute electoral votes. USA/Canada does not do that. For a clearer explanation, see "YOUNG-PAP" of blogspot. Its July 30, 2008 article titled: "Government-owned forum tells FT to make police report against citizen" contains a long comment which explains clearly why Singapore's situation is absolutely unique in the world!

u dont know much about S'pore since u ve been there sometime... i am a Hong Kong Chinese and have once been there for air transforing. Singporeans were quite friendly to me and didnt treat foreigners in a high-hat way... and some of them even speak Cantonese! XD

While I am now a US Citizen, I take great pride in my heritage and my country of birth. Singapore is a great country and like all great countries, will encounter growing pains. Here in the US, there is a sentiment against immigrants, legal or illegal, about taking low-level jobs like picking fruit or washing dishes. Why? It's because the youth of today feel like these jobs are beneath them. Get a grip, work your way up the system and respect will be bestowed when it has been earned!

The future generation of Singapore may have parents who are ex-foreigners, just as many of our parents are not born in Singapore. Before we make comments on their parents, please think about ours.

My parents came here but did not displace any locals of jobs. They took up citizenship the moment it was granted. They never for one moment intended to use this place as a stepping stone to go elsewhere or back where they came from. Unlike most of the present bunch of foreigners.
