Great song & saw them play this in Buffalo '93. Hot as hell. Fun live song & crowd loved it.
It always bothers me to see people post negative shit about this band. Sure the band had their high & low points, but the critics can bite it.
I'm for one am thankful Jerry played as much as he did! So I take w/the good with the 'less good', or 'garbage' as some "Youtube Music Expert "music expert put it.
@staggerleeee It's not all rainbows and unicorns. Deadheads were some of the most critical fans you'll ever come across. I thought the GD never gelled on this tune and it always seemed like a throw away tune for them. To each their own, eh?

@SublimeJunkie24 I think The Clash should feel honored that Bobby Fuller would cover their song. I'd say Bobby Fuller's version is the best, even if he did steal it from the Clash. (I oughta be a music historian).
The instrumental isn't that bad, but the vocals are OFF. Not certain if it is the performance or the recording, but I've heard a recording or two of this and I just hop a cop isn't around if those good recordings are on the radio!
I love this! If you love the Dead, then you know they are all about experimenting and they certainly are with this. From the beginning of the track, it sounds like they are just trying to get comfortable with the song itself. They wrestle with it. Unlike other groups, the Dead were never afraid to share this process with their fans.

I saw the GD perform a David Lindley song "Talk to a Lawyer" with Bob Dylan @ The Akron Bowl in 1987. I know I was trippin but I had to ask my girlfriend at the time if it was indeed a David Lindley tune and she confrimed my hunch. The cool think about it was when Dylan took the lead from Jerry on the guitar solo. Rock on furthur...
Wow... I hate to be a bummer, but SeaKing 1926 is right... this track is bad music by any measure. The last few years of the GD made me sad then and make me sad now
I love heaarig songs that I never heard the Dead do before. It ain't about the individual song, or how well it was or not performed on any particular night - just enjoy it!
Just a bit.. It is one thing to say that you didnt think it was a good version, but saying it is garbage is going to far. Its the dead we are talking about here!
Terrible. i'm sure Jerry, Bill, Bob, Phil, and all would agree. This recording of this song SUCKS. Nobody loves the Dead at their best more than me. Why do you fling this garbage?
You can go down to scumbag valley were you belong! This is a great version of the song, it just goes to show your NOT a true grateful dead fan and your just a perfectionest. You are the one who is garbage!
@MOTM47 What is everyone so touchy about ?There is not a true deadhead out there that is not gonna trash the band when they have an off night. It goes with the territory man.And some of us that have seen the band starting in the '70's thru the '90's have caught enough shows that we can pick out the good the bad and 'lost in the ozone' shows. So get some thicker skin and don't take it to heart when someone speaks their mind.
@Phinetune Can't be 1990. 1st they never played this song in 90. 2nd U can hear Welnicks voice, Brent was still alive on the 23rd of July but died 3days later. I would say its from around 93/94. Killer tune.. Miss ya Jer!!!
must have been a great time! Jerry seemed to have a short lived resurgince of energy in the spring of 94. Wish he could've kicked the shit because it destroyed him. I think all tragedies in his life made it tough for him.
I think the last time I heard this live it was september of 1994 Boston Garden. Jerrys voice was great and so was Wymoth state park for those who know about fighting the law and winning. Boy those were the days of a hella party east cost style. I would give my left nut to have that back. Whos with me???
I was there for the first version of this, in Cleveland if I remember correctly. They played it so many times that tour we were singin, "I Fought the Song and the Song Won..." , ah thanks for sharing, good memories.
I saw them at Buckeye Lake Ohio in 93 or 94( not sure ) live with Jerry, I also traveled to Deer Creek in Indiana for many shows as well as Memphis TN the pyramid didnt have a ticket at that one but still got the experience of a lifetime
What's the date and location of this performance?

I guess true grateful dead fans accept anything the dead did. It's just music and the dead were not gods. They were fucking human beings.

Really good (as every song the Grateful Dead covers), but I'd have to say The Clash cover this song the best. No offense, of course.
