  • Awesome, but Charlie PARKER did this Jaco remade it. Lets not forget that. Bass players like NHOP was playing this before JACO on the stand up. but I do agree with the chops,

  • Dude, great phrasing!

  • What program do you use for recording your videos, and what do you use to record your bass? Great solo, I enjoyed your background also! Quarter notes can do sooo much when played well. Great job!

  • @ultimabass

It's an Ibanez -- you can see Gary Willis playing one and talking about how it's made on YT.

This one here had the frets removed by the look of it.

  • @Drblooter99 Na man this is just a regular Ibanez GWB standard Gary Willis signature, the frets didnt need removing. An amazing bass from what i hear of it (not much of a fretless player myself!)

  • that bass is sick.how much did it cost? what kind of bass is it?

  • Where's the RAMP, MAN???

  • So good to ears ! I like fretless sound. Yours is so great! I can't find that sound with mine...any advise?? I read under, kind of strings have to do??

  • Good work !

All the best from Puerto Rico.

  • best bass solo i ever heard

  • lol really? you need to get out more

  • Wich one of all the models of the signature of GW,is this one?Somebody knows??The GWB1,the GWB105, or the GWB1005?thanks a lot for reading.

  • @Augustofunk

Looks like the GWB1 - ebony fingerboard and markers at the center of the board.

  • That's some great phrasing. Might have to transcribe this!

  • 2:23 Jaco :)

  • goooood :)

  • ljjjjj

  • Can you tell me the difference in quality and sound in the less expensive model as opposed to the more expensive ibanez model?

  • Difference is on the website, the cheaper model uses a cheaper body wood, fingerboard wood, pickups, bridge, tuner. Its a different bass with a similiar setup. If your casual go with the cheaper model. But remember when it comes to pro quality, there are NO shortcuts.

  • if you're talking about the GWB35 ...i have that bass, and i've played the other (GWB1005) ..if you want to pay 2000 pounds more for a bartolini pickup then go for it.. otherwise go for the GWB35 (the black one) ..obviously there is the other difference, the wood... but there isnt much difference in sound. so i would recommend the GWB35 ..£500, you cant go wrong!

  • Buenisimo! Exelent.

    Very good senior.

Is that a Gary Willis bass?

  • I love this sound, that ass it must be an Ibanez I thought

  • Really jazzy solo! Love the sound and the fills of it! Great work

  • Nice sound. More Jeff Berlinish han Jacoish though.

  • Who said it was meant to be Jaco? He didnt even write the song.

  • what a great tone..

  • "Thanks."

  • nice tone and nice play

  • hahaaa... see ...i'm realy sPEACHless...should say-sPEECHless :)

  • That's what i'm sayin' in my second post.Read carefully:)

  • I'm speachless...great job!

  • BLACK STRINGS?!? I WANT THEM!!! What is? im in europe, by the way... Whats the name of it?

  • i think there called black beauties by DR

  • actually since it's a fretless i doubt he'd use round wounds, i'm guessing they're black tapewound, pretty much flat wounds.

  • Those are the strings, Black Beauties :)

I don't use flatwounds on fretless mostly because I prefer the tone of rounds. However if you are looking for an upright tone flats are better.

  • Dr extralife black beauties

  • Love that warm, woody tone! :)

  • Hey!! you should teach online!! Very nice.

  • I really like when two or more bass guitars playing in the same time. very nice jazz!

  • nice nice nomas falta mas musica o por lo menos una morra bailando jajaja na ntc pero si esta kurada nomas para estar aka en la playa dormido

  • cool bass, but why did you get rid of the ramp? it seems to me like that was the main thing that set the Gary Willis models apart.

  • I'm not a big fan of the ramp, I prefer it without. If you want to experiment a bit and slap the fretless, the ramp doesn't help.

  • IS TOO BORED!!!

  • Nice playing man. And very in tune as playing fretless can be a total bitch..... so.. nice ears. And nice tempo. you are so relaxed in your attitude .... it really shows..... it really sits well. and sweet lines that really nail the changes. Inspirational job.

  • Very nice tone man.

  • This is good, a very clean job... but what kind of bass is this? Only one bar?? only one volume button? Well, doesen't matters. Extraordinary!

  • Ibanez Gary Willis GWB1 signature model.

  • Ok, thanks! Good one...

  • I looked at alot of bass videos. You have one of the best tones I've ever come across on youtube. And awesome playing as well. Great Job!

  • Wow thanks! I found what works best for me is mostly running direct, after all that's what Victor Wooten does. Thanks again.

  • Well you aint seen mine then lol just kidding could not resist it .

  • Sonido muy relajante!!

  • Amazing!!!!

  • what amp do you use?

  • On this recording I just went line in with an E-Mu 1616 audio card. The amp I use for live and sometimes recording is an iamp-350 made by euphonic audio. For a cab I'm using the cxl-1-12, together it sounds amazing. It has the clarity of studio monitors with the projection of a 4-12 bass rig.

  • good sound

  • well said !

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • Good job man, i enjoyed this

  • what strings are those

  • nice sound, man...excellent playing.

you've got your thumb rooted on your e string. If i had to guess I would say that you normally play a 4 string.

  • Wicked mate, your black string kick ass.

  • Actually, good point. Are those flat wound or round one? I'd only been able to find nylon coated round wounds once in my life.

  • is that the ibanez gary willis

  • You have a very nice soulful tone. Yeah!

  • yea man really good job, it sounds fantastic, what kind of bass is it?? regards

  • so much better that all these people thumping out donna lee ala jaco. nice to see some originality

  • I totally agree.

  • I also agree, but Jaco's version is pretty amazing; but your right in the sense that people forget about the originality and just learn it straight out of a book as if it were Bach's cello suites or something

  • I think that learning another's solo is a good way to improve, especially if it's the solo of a master, like JP, or that of someone's that you admire. Learning Bach is learning a melody, which is somewhat a different category.

Sadly, most people who learn JP's stuff, fall into this "Look what I can do!" category, and never seem to move beyond that and take care of their own music.

  • I totally agree with you there. I think many bassists learn Jaco's stuff before learning 'music'. Therefore, they only learn the technical side of what Jaco did, which is only half the story.

They learn his stuff note for note, but they don't really know where to take that from there. So people tend to get stuck with no originality but amazing chops!

I think this video gives a great example of how much further people can take this Jaco stuff.

  • @ai4281 precisely!! I always explain this to my students.

  • Nice work.

  • Hey man! Nice phrasing and sound! regards!

  • Lovely sound. A defo favourite.

  • what strings do you use???

  • excellent playing... love the tone too.

  • really digging your tone. what do you use?

  • Thanks! This solo is using an Ibanez Gary Willis model bass, that with a little bit of compression and reverb. I ran the bass direct into an emu-1616 laptop audio card, I can't remember if I even used a D.I. but I do sometimes use an Aural Aphex bass Xciter.

  • Very nice indeed, very Willis esque in approach, I guess it's hard not to emulate the great one when you've bought his sig bass! Got the three finger style down too! Gary is one of the best in the world no doubt.

  • That is a great sounding solo there. Keep posting the vids and I'll keep watchin' them.

  • Nice solo dude, I love the GW Bass I so very nearly bought one a few yrs back, wish I had now!

  • you de-fret your bass or was it made this way? and nice solo by the way

  • I have de-fretted a bass in the past, but I don't recommend doing so, it can be messy. This bass comes both fretted and fretless, I bought it fretless. Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Jim

  • very nice. congrats on a job well done. people are saying that you should be playing the melody? I say I BELEIVE YOU ALREADY can, and very tasty well placed soloing sir, as I may add. I play a five string fretless Kenneth Smith design.

  • hey brother i like it alot. my fav bass fretless wise also. come see my vid called satya live, ull see my black version of the bass. the cheapy!

  • nice dude! but next time try playing the melodi and then the solo

  • First class! 5*

  • did you de-fret this bass yourself? and what tempo is this? about 120...? very well played. i'm learning to solo now and is takes more practice than anything i've ever done. i'd love to pick your brain (not literally of course). peace.

  • I bought this bass as a fretless. I have de-fretted a bass before but I don't recommend doing so unless you really know what you're doing. As for soloing, try singing a smooth melodic line over the song you are playing and listen to where certain notes want to resolve. 3rds tend to resolve to 7ths and 7ths to 3rds.

  • thanks a bunch. yeah, my teacher has taught me ton of scalular (sp?/word?) ideas. i think i'm trying too hard. i'm gonna try that melody idea now. thanks again. peace.

  • Very nice fretless playing! Do those strings have a black coating on them?

  • What kind of a bass are you playing.

  • It's an older Gary Willis signature model by Ibanez. I highly recommend this bass, it's the best I've owned.

  • Thought so. Nice bass.

  • Yo it's nohad here, amazing solo mate! gotta catch a gig of yours in MTL! :-)

  • Hey man! very nice solo...great job.

  • wow good stuff

  • Hey Jimm... excellent as always, great upload. Hey there is a Knob missing in the bass jeje..

  • Yeah that always seems to happen to my basses and guitars, oh well maybe I'll get a cool modified volume knob like a skull or some dice.

  • Very nice!!

  • as ever : true inspirational.

thanks again for this great upload !
