The UP just finished installing 56000 ties between SLO and SB. They also installed 14 miles of new continuous welded rail to curves and sidings. All sidings were redone to high standards including Honda which is a nightmare to maintain. The current project is 86000 ties between Gilroy and San Ardo and will be done in a couple of weeks. We are already seeing through freight on the Coast Subdivision.
@picklcat That's A LOT of ties. It will be interesting to have some more freight traffic coming through. An Auto train is one thing, but I always liked seeing the Manifest trains that UP would run. For the longest time, you could count on seeing the MWCPT roll through after 796 on Weekdays and at 4:30 PM on Weekends. We also had the Baretables and a Stack train, the "ILCOA", which later was changed to an "ILBOA" and routed up Tehachapi. I can't wait to have some of those trains back.
@theup3985 UP is doing some serious work to the Northern section of the Coast Line. 11 Detours so they don't get delayed, but 14 doesn't have to because they get to the work zones after the MoW crews have finished for the day.
@EWM27 Ah, I see. I wonder if this means that UP planning to use the Coast Line more in the future, because in recent years, there has been hardly any freight traffic at all on the line, with Amtrak being about the only train you ever see on the Coast. I noticed that they were getting rid of all of the old SP-era searchlights, and I thought it was odd to spend so much money on new signals if UP doesn't use the line much. Maybe they're finally going to put the line to real use.
@theup3985 From what I've heard, they are expecting a traffic increase. This means that the Coast Line needs to be upgraded from it's current state of disrepair, meaning new rail, ties, and signals. Then we can expect some more freight traffic, and hopefully daily Manifests, which we haven't had since December 2007.
@EWM27 Good to hear that the Coast Line is going to be more active. Too bad for the old SP searchlights though. :( I'm actually surprised that the one's in the Central Valley and Tehachapi have survived this long considering it's the main north-south artery in CA, I'd have thought UP would have gotten rid of those by now, although they probably will before too much longer.
I wish they'd have the f59phi's leading for once, they have the best k5la's!

@foxystig I completely disagree. I'll take a Dash 8 leading over an F59 any day, regardless of the horn. Horns don't mean squat to me anymore.

Loved that K5LA. Why was the Coast Starlight detoured? Was the Coast Line closed for construction?
