@jiji45 Actually West Virginia did not exist until 1863. The war had been going on for 3 yrs by then when WV seceded from Virginia. And there is some who claim that the state was illegally created but the fact is that it seceded from VA and was accepted into the Union by Congress as a state. It was also pretty much occupied by Union troops by the time of it's creation.

@WouterNed You are correct. West Virginia was not part of the Confederacy. The only reason West Virginia is separate from Virginia is because the people living in that part of Virginia did not want to be part of the Confederacy.
