Shenandoah is said to mean "Beautiful Daughter of the Stars." A fitting name indeed. Have seen much of it's beauty in the autumn from the old 51 Cardinal, by car on the roads.
My fav song and I love arlos version...but to me the one that harry belefonte does from his "live at carnegie hall" album just goes to your heart , and no one does it better! Just my opinion though ;-)
This song has many versions, very many. the original version is about the Shenandoah River in Iowa, the Missouri is the next river encountered after leaving the Shenandoah valley in Iowa. Guthrie adds many original choruses in his version, they are not original.
What really ticks me off is all you ass holes pontificating about the past. The past and for that matter all of history is replete with those that conquer and the conquered but what perplexes me the most is how you try to give it your own slant to shit you know nothing about. The only people that know anything were those that lived in that time. Let it go. The world will never see peace as long as you keep bringing up this stuff and throwing fuel on the fire. Its just a song enjoy it and move on
Sir(s): Uncommon to 'popular belief,' anything West of the Missouri River is beautiful to the "Passionate Troubadour." Let Me tell of the Amount & Insurmountable Measure of Falsehood Made Up Against a "Follower of Wm. PENN" as I claim to be anywhere. "He hates Hispanics" and "He hates San Antonio" are simple reminisciences of the U. S. CIVIL WAR RUMORS. Today, however, there is a sweeter song sung by Me & Few Good Men. My "Genes" have been slandered since they are simply part of "G-RACE."--J.D.
This has always been a favorite of mine. However, I only recently realized - after the lyric in question was brought to my attention by a Sioux friend - just how hurtful the words revolving around Chief Shenandoah trading his daughter for "firewater" is to the First Americans. Alcohol and lack of opportunity, plus cultural differences and broken treaties have left the true Americans holding the shitty end of the stick. This could be changed - if only.
I have loved this song since I was a preschooler. My dad was a big fan of ballads of this type & he could sing. He passed both along to me, along with a love for the land and a hate of hypocrisy.
@MsSapphire87 BEAUTIFULLY EXPRESSED on your part! - I feel the same exactly! - But I have the hunch that in some distant past, inside our souls, we DID know this time. There are some amazing Arabic songs which give me the same feeling!
@MsSapphire87 SO RIGHT! - I found myself by flukes of destiny in Amman for a month 2 years ago. The city had nothing nice about it; but walking along dusty old totally uninteresting streets, over and over again I just wanted to weep - and NOT from boredom! - I could never answer why; in the end I was forced to accept it was some old deep memories surging up from some past association!
WarriorPrincess, this version is beautiful and this Video is amazing! If this is a school project ask your music instructor which version you should use.
Spadecaller, this is one of my favorite of your videos. I am wondering which version of Shenandoah this is 1st, 2nd or 3rd. The only one I had ever heard was the one about the Shenandoah Valley which is beautiful also.
Cynthia Ann Parker was my great grand mother's niece. Cynthia Ann died of grief for her beloved Commanche Chief husband and children when her family recaptured her. I grew up with this story long before "The Searchers" good movie, but historically flawed.
i really like this
thank you

Beautiful images on video. Always loved the melody and always will. Was not aware that the lyrics were tragic as they are. Thanks for the post.

We so wronged the original Americans. We can't ever make it up to them. They are, however, getting their money back!

Why does John Denver sing "Shenandoah River" in Country Roads (West Virginia) when the river is in fact in Virginia, not West Virginia?
