This is a fantastic performance of this song !!! I remember this was recorded for a video/DVD.  It was a benefit for the victims of the fire in a café in Volendam Holland on a New Years day . Does anybody if the video or DVD is still available ?

Neither can I. I saw him being interviewed about 20 years ago and he was asked about the meaning of Don't pay the ferryman, his reply was that he wrote songs that would conjure strong visual images, meaning was not part of the process. So if people see a religous connotation in this song then he's succeeded in creating an image.

Or, more bluntly, if you see religion in this song then it's all in your mind.

This was one of the great songs from his geat period - I don't listen to the new stuff so much, but back in the late 70's and early 80's was in a league of his own. The voice still goes with me when I travel. Thank you for posting. This is an original performance with a lovely sound.
