Liebmann has put his entire being into the pursuit of excellence in the Coltrane format. HUGE respect for Lieb and his path. All of them are brilliant, but to me Liebmann is an absolute knockout every time. No slick patterns, no cloying saccharine tone...just raw saxophone power and harmonic complexity. Liebmann is my kind of jazz master!!!
Saxplayers are the stars of this vid. All of them great and playing their asses off. But that would not be possible without a great comping team. About this: what a great sideman Dave Holland is. His strong supportive bass lines are unvelievable. One can learn a lot just listening to him. The pulse of the song is there, with him, all the time... and that's what keeps everybody together.
it would be hard not to just stop the performance after Brecker's solo, then...wow Liebman...channeling Coletrane with someone channeling elvin jones on the drums...
it would be hard not to just stop the performance after Brecker's solo, then...wow Liebman...channeling Coletrane with someone channeling elvin jones on the drums...
Brecker sounded great...it must have been hard for Liebman to make a focused and direct statement coming behind him. In a way he was all over the place.
Brecker is the most musical and kicks everyone's ass. Meanwhile, LIebman sounds like he has shit lodged in his throat. His tone is awful, his ideas are awful, and hes a poser.
I participated to a masterclass of Dave Liebman. Really interesting and I can tell he can play everything that comes to his mind... he played some examples of solos on the Impressions chords, one harmonic solo, one rythmic solo, one groovy solo etc... he has an incredible control of his music... so i think comments like "he makes noise, etc..." aren't really of the same level as his playing.
scuse my poor english, im french i hope my comment makes sense
Exactly. I used to feel like Liebman made noise but, sure enough, years later I've come to realize that it's nothing but pure skill and control. It takes a mature listener to even get where he's coming from.
@lou2cv they do make sense . liebman on top of being a great performer is a master music philosopher . this tribute is packed full with love , respect and caring for trane . if he just he could have seen this....
That's cool. Incorporating Coltrane's solo throughout! They're all blowing their asses off. Liebman did some great harmonic sh*% at the end of his solo. Als is goed!
I don't understand why people are saying that Liebman is crazy...He's doing exactly what Trane would have wanted him to do by expanding on every possible level....He's just using lots of different sounds throughout the tune. It breaks it up from the same old same old...not that Brecker, Garzone, Redman, or any of the guys there are boring, but he just pushes the boundaries.
P.S. I'm a major Redman and Brecker fan! Never even really listened to Liebman.
I like Liebman's solo. Oh, by the way, any of you Liebman critics ever play with any of these guys onstage? Do any of you have any critically acclaimed CD's ------ Did I hear a pin drop? I didn't think so.
@shah2088 redman rocks, he has his own style, but i think i'll prefer garzone, real stuff beyond of all... but all of them are real big cats, brecker swings like a mother fucker and liebman is pure energy
Dave Liebman's solo was supreme. I am a tenor sax player myself, and found Liebman to be nothing short of genius. Ever since I was a kid, I loved it when cats would play the altisimo register, especialy on tenor. To me, when you expand jazz, the routine is not predictable, such as other cats. Liebman stretches the imagination. That is why jazz is not just a freedom music, but a freedom movement.
Man, brecker does pretty good on this song. Although... I have to say dave liebman never really plays anything except altissimo and screaming notes. It's all bullshit. I'm really sure that dave can play the shit out of anything, but he's all caught up in the whole coltrane-esque spiritual screaming walls of sound stuff. I dislike. You man disagree, that's cool, but even if you're a hardcore jazz fan, which I am, his music is challenging to relate to.
Hey to the both of you, can you even hit the altissimo range on sax? And until I see you playing with cats like Brecker and Liebman, I wouldn't criticize people.
I agree with quinsanity. I think people should use the giants like Brecker and Trane as a guide in establishing a good tone. However cloning the greats is kinda boring... we've heard that before, from them! What I think is important is for people to try and find their own personal sound, that they prefer. That takes introspection and much refining.
Dave has his own sound. Some people just don't like his sound or approach but that's fine. PLus I don't think everyone should sound the same or like trane or brecker. We need less clones....
I think the definitive version of this song is McCoy Tyner's album with Michael Brecker...I forget what it's called at the moment, but it kills...bad.
Some people like this Leibman fella. I've seen a lot of live videos of his. I just don't get what the fuss is all about. I honestly think he's a doodler..
Of all these players Leibman sounds most similar to Coltrane than the others.....Coltrane was not a doodler, neither is Leibman...you're comment is somewhat ignorant.
But that supports my opinion. They all have their own distinguished styles (except I don't know much about Garzone). Leibman is a different saxophonist everytime he plays; it's as if he hasn't found his musical character yet..
Also, Brecker has been argued by many (and I personally agree) to be of the caliber of Coltrane. Leibman never stood a chance. Redman played well here and stuck to his unmistakable style. Garzone as well. I guess Leibman was just having a bad day..
Je continue à croire que tout cela est bien loin de Coltrane,et bien triste de surcroit...I can hear the orthodoxy now...."Here's proof that he is a heretic and truly ignorant:he's not American."....grosses bises de l'effronté.

These guys should have stuck with Fusion.Their latter-day conversion to straight-ahead is not convincing.Worse,it's regressive.Coltrane was once accused of being anti-jazz and too academic. He took it in stride.I've never heard anyone say anything about these guys.Nothing but blind praise.Bunch of lemmings.
oliver I'd have to disagree with you on your statement. Coltrane worked his whole life until death trying to discover all different sounds and shapes of music from all over the world. These players are just paying tribute to that and its not meant to be a contest, there simply taking everything they can do and there trying play with their soul to represent their hero, John Coltrane
KD,I wish it were as you say.But this is the wrong kind of hero-worship;this is a very staged event featuring musicians who have been linked with Coltrane because they ape his idiosyncracies, and within such hallowed stylistic safety.I've heard and played with many saxophone players who are endebted to Coltrane, and yet play fine music without cheapening Coltrane's approach by turning it into a Disney-like attraction. These are limp fireworks..
I dont think that you can make that kind of judgement about these players, all of these guys are at the TOP of there game and unless you can play 1/100 as good as them than you should just take what you can and learn as much off of this vide as possible.
.I can "make that kind of judgement about these players".I guess I expected to be put in my place for daring to criticize these sacrosanct players. How foolish of me.I guess Coltrane's music IS nothing but a sequence of rambling, stilted, scalar structures with supersize harmonic texturing.I thought Coltrane music was about blues and swinging, that those were a given, that his virtuosity and chordal and tonal explorations were the cherry on top of a very broad and seasoned musical scope.I was wrong.
You are totally right.... he was swinging and sounded good on every note he played however, these guys are from a COMPLETE different time. They are exploring newer sound, a different language with the new demands of making it in the music scene today. So at least give the BAD ASS guys credit.
What new sound and language and new demands?..they know their instrument mechanically, but where's the music?..they all sound like bad computer programs designed to play "Coltranisms".You want to hear really "BAD ASS" modern tenor that swings?...Warne Marsh in the 40's(who influenced Coltrane),Don Byas,John Gilmore....heck,Lester YOUNG in the 30's was and is still the most modern of tenors.
These guys are paying tribute to Coltrane, but at the same time expressing themselves as evolving musicians. If musicians are going to be stuck in the past, then where is jazz going? Coltrane created that next stepping stone and these guys are just adding on to it. Jazz HAS to evolve. And it wasn't just about blues and swinging. He found harmonics, patterns, and styles that we still use today. So if you are saying that these guys are wrong for doing this, then I would need a good reason why
The past is the future.Jazz evolved quickly in the past century through so many unique personalities whose accomplishments were modern then and now.You can't change that. The most avant-garde stance today is to play yourself. These players here are adding nothing new.If you really believe that they do,then nothing I can say will change that.
The past is the future APSH! You have 4 of arguable the best tenor saxophonist today with the exception of Brecker's death. You also have 4 of the most different saxophonists on the same stage, playing the same song. Its paying TRIBUTE. You would know the word TRIBUTE if you quote Lester, or Don or any other player. Like I said Coltrane was that first stepping stone. These 4 are paying tribute with their own style.
Maybe tribute is the intention.I define tribute as playing yourself, not beating the Coltrane ethos to death.Coltrane is no stepping stone,he's an end in himself.Anyway, what I say doesn't matter.Let's respectfully disagree, and leave it at that.Peace.
Did you just say Coltrane is an end in himself? Coltrane was just the beginning of the free jazz era and the post bop era. You saying that Coltrane is an end in himself just shows that you are stuck in a place where you think jazz should be played one way. And paying tribute is QUOTING players who have impacted the jazz scene. You saying that tribute is just playing yourself probably shows that you are egotistical.
just so you know..........the bass players switch at like 3 minutes into the song, during breckers solo...it goes from Dave holland to Christian Mcbride.......in case you didn't notice...........
brecker is always amazing, garzone is insane, redman tells a good story , and leibman just shits over everything

This comment has received too many negative votes show
..sounds like a bad,hubris-filled jam session. This junk has nothing to do with Coltrane.very sad....

It's ok Leonheart. Some people (like olivierbarjot) are just too ignorant to even realize that they are ignorant.

I was only talk about the head. But the whole thing would have been nice to hear some harmonies.

Who takes the time to write in such odd rhythmic figures for impressions, but doesn't write in harmonies for the 4 saxes to play?
ScanlonJazz 4 years ago
I think they were reading a Coltrane solo.
Zachmozach 4 years ago
It's Coletrane's solo the album Impression (naturally).

Geoffry Keezer. I just realized I didn't add him to the list. I'll edit it. He plays in the Christian McBride and used to play in Ray Brown's Trio.
