The right to bear arms has nothing to do with necessity. Its about the right to posess and bear arms irrespective of whatever "need" you might have. refernce the first ammendment: No one has a "need" to print a newspaper, or dispay art, yet such things are guaranteed as a right. Im sure the culture shock in america is quite heavy, but the right to carry a gun is linked much closer to British political traditions than you might think. Locke, Paine, Mills, etc.

I live in Chicago, which has a complete handgun ban. But the criminals with guns don't follow those laws, which is why we have HUNDREDS of deaths so far this summer. That is because the criminals know that no one in the city can defend themselves and rarely are the police around when a crime occurs. I lived overseas in Africa and one a few occasions needed a gun to protect my family, my wife used a pistol on a rapist with an axe.
